Many items don't stack properly in inventory and chests
It's often the case that like-items that should stack in a chest or inventory don't stack.
For awhile I thought maybe the new update introduced a feature where wooden items crafted with different kinds of wood would no longer stack, even if they look identical, since it is most common with chests, torches, wooden pressure plates, and trap doors. However, I've seen this on non-wood items now too, like droppers. Seems like it's most common though w/ wood items.

I have the same issue on iOS as well. Sometimes it is just as simple as dropping the items on the ground but one time I had a problem where I unnamed one item and it refused to stack with the others no matter what.

Michael Gill: I complained about the stacking/combining issue in MCPE-32347, would help if you add a vote and comment to it, it currently has no votes/followers.
Re this bug: agree. Replacing 'topping up' of stacks with auto swapping was a mistake. They could have made much better use of double click then for topping up stacks, which is confusing and inconsistent as is.
Absolutely not fixed for me. Double tapping does nothing for some items - cactus, melon etc etc... others it works. I have to drop the items and pick up again to stack in one slot. This is a duplicate of MCPE-32347?

Seems to be a duplicate of MCPE-32347
This issue might also relate to MCPE-32152, in which breaking a chest incorrectly increments its Damage value. It may be that under certain conditions, other stackable blocks that are broken are getting their Damage values incremented. This would make them not be stackable with undamaged items.
It would be very helpful if someone could attach a world with normally stackable items that won't stack. That would allow me to look at the NBT data to see if their Damage values are 0, as they should be, or > 0, as I suspect.
Edit:
I agree that this sounds like a duplicate of MCPE-32347, so I intend to resolve this report as one. (I suspect both may have the same root cause as MCPE-32152, but I can't be sure just yet.) If anyone has a world they could attach as mentioned above, please attach it to MCPE-32347 instead. You might also wish to upvote and/or watch that ticket for updates.
This issue is a Duplicate of MCPE-32347.
This issue may have the same root cause as MCPE-32347, in which various kinds of items cannot be stacked in inventories. If those items are having their Damage values incremented, like the chest in this issue, that would make them unstackable with undamaged items (as well as with items having different Damage values). The bug would then be the same in both tickets: that under some circumstances the DV is being incremented for items that do not take damage.
Which server are you playing on? If it is happening in normal multiplayer or Realms, it might be the same issue as MCPE-32347, in which case dropping the items and recollecting them sometimes allows them to stack correctly again.

Do you have a copy of the world where items aren't stacking?
I could make one @mega_spud, and zip it up. Do you have a preferred place for me to put it? Note it's about 75 Mb.
Wherever you prefer is fine, as long as it's not too much trouble, thanks.

It's 73Mb zipped.
I emptied out the player's inventory except for a handful of items you'd expect would stack, but dont (a couple unstackable torches, a couple unstackable ender chests).
cc @mega_spud
Thanks for the test world, much appreciated.
I opened it in the latest beta version, and the items were stacking together ok, so I hope it's an issue that has already been addressed, and you should see the issue resolved in a future update.
Mega spud... what is the version you tested it on as some of us do not use beta versions and an idea of the release the fix will be on would be nice? I appreciate that it will only be a clue as all fixes may not be released on the next production version. Ta.
This issue is not resolved. I got it in 1.2.14 and still have gotten it in 1.2.15 with observers, doors, and most annoyingly trapdoors. It seems whats happening is when you break the block the game gives you wthe block in whatever rotational or activational state it was in, not it’s default state you get when it is newly crafted. I’m on iPad Pro.
Another bug much like this is that my cobble stairs aren’t able to be put together in one stack even if both stacks are well below 64. (Honestly their are so many bugs with the UI. These are just the two that I ave recently had. Thankfully unlike other bugs ive commented on this isn’t serious or severe. Still would like to see it addressed tho as it makes chest organizing easier.)
This happens to me when I use the educational edition
On version 1.2.15 for iOS it seems a bit random. Cactus and melons don't stack but pumpkins do. Rails don't stack cobbles do. Chests won't stack. Not severe but extremely annoying that this new not-so-classic-any-longer UI was not tested properly prior to release.
Is this just an issue with stacks not combining correctly if they total more than 64? If so that is described at
MCPE-32149.If this is an issue with smaller numbers of items not combining, that would be a different issue.
For me, its smaller stacks not combining like two stacks of 15 or so. I've noticed it with end rods, purpur blocks, and chests. I have to find which stacks is in error, place them down and break them again, and as I break them they start completing the other tack in my inventory.
Mega spud. It depends on the item but may be the same problem as 32914 anyway. For example rails will not stack properly over 64 and will not combine if less than 64 so I think there is a fundamental flaw in stacking certain items regardless of total. With rails, I can end up with many stacks with different totals and all I can do is swap them (can we get rid of the swapping..?) However, with all the fiddling about I have done it seems that a stack gets an incorrect property associated with it therefore the software does not see two stacks of the same item as identical hence will not add to 64 and will not combine to less than 64. This may be orientation but cactus can have the same problem as well so probably not. BUT... in my testing I dragged a stack of rails over a 'clean' stack and, as if by magic, the rails started behaving again - same as if you you throw them all away and suck them up again they all stack to 64 or the max beautifully. May have some relevance.
Looks as though 1.2.16 has fixed the problems - well I thought so... this update is to report that pumpkins definitely don't stack properly although some items do seem to work better than they did before.
Not fixed for me in 1.2.16.
Not fixed for me either.
Not fixed. I’m actually having more trouble than I was before. Odd thing though, I had two stacks of torches. One was qty 4 the other qty 33. The larger stack was in my ender chest so I crafted the 4 for a project. The I tried to get them put together and they wouldn’t stack. They just kept swapping in my inventory. They wouldn’t even combine if I placed one and broke it, they just kept to themselves. So I put the 33 back in the enderchest but I put the 4 stack instead and decided to keep the 4 and use them and when I took them out and went to swap them with the 33 they stacked! I don’t have an answer. But later I had two ladders that wouldn’t stack and I was able to place them and break them and they stacked.
This is confirmed for me on my iPad Pro running 1.2.16. I have 2 Purpur Blocks that refuse to combine with another stack of Purpur Blocks. I have tried everything from dropping, placing, using a UI, relogging, etc. and still nothing. I think this may be a NBT issue but it is slightly annoying and wasts space and/or blocks.
@joshua de ruiter: I have the same thing w/ purpur blocks. I have 8 of them that don't stack w/ other ones. However, they seem to me to be a similar but possible different issue then the torches/train tracks/red stone items/etc things that won't stack.
Why do I think it's different? With these other items, there is a workaround that Gabrielle De Matte recommended over in
MCPE-32149– throw all the items on the floor, and pick them up again, and low and behold, now they stack. However, w/ the purpur blocks that workaround doesn't work. They are special somehow. Furthermore, I could swear (but not 100% sure) that the purpur blocks not stacking was an issue before this broader problem w/ other items not stacking cropped up. This is just a side note, there may be a couple things in play at the moment. The failure to stack other items is a much bigger irritant (for me anyway).
Any update on this issue? Is it being fixed?
Another update and still not fixed. Any update on this please?
For iOS I see the same issue, throwing the items out of inventory works most of the time. Leaves however, will not stack properly no matter what I do and typically it’s just 1 that refuses to stack. So in my chests I have several single leaf blocks. I was thinking maybe I was getting them because I used silk touch axe/pick/shovels but the same thing would happen when acquired with shears that were not enchanted...
I've been living with this for a while now, but the leaves not stacking (and refusing to stack even with the tricks I've figured out) has driven me here. I hope they can figure out how to fix it soon, because this is getting annoying.
I think it can happen with any item. Items I remember this happening with are chests, fence gates, cactus, purpur stairs, purpur blocks, shulker shells, and torches. It would always happen when moving items from a chest (or other storage box) to your inventy or visa versa, and throwing one of the stacks on the ground and letting them combine in your inventory always worked for me.
I hope it can be fixed soon...
I have the same problem with purpur blocks. I have a dozen that won't stack with the other purpur blocks.
This issue may possibly have the same root cause as
MCPE-32152, in which a chest that has been broken with an axe cannot be equipped on a donkey, mule, or llama. In that ticket, the reason is that the chest incorrectly received damage when it was broken. Most items other than tools, weapons, and armor normally do not receive damage. This applies to the items mentioned in this ticket as well. Another consequence of items receiving damage is that they cannot be stacked together, because the damage value makes them appear to be different.Interesting. I have the same issue as David Frost, and have purpur blocks that will not stack with others.
Since it isn't listed, this is still happening in v1.8. (with leaf blocks in my case)
I can confirm that leaf blocks are also affected. However it only happens when the leaves are broken with a silk touch axe instead of shears.
I found this occurring in the 1.10.0.4 Beta with oak leaves broken with a silk touch pickaxe, even leaves broken with the same pickaxe from what appeared to be the same tree.
Looking at the NBT data, the difference in the blocks in inventory is in Block.states.persistent_bit and Block.states.update_bit. I believe the persistent_bit was changed when I placed the broken leaves on the ground and broke them again with the same pickaxe. I was trying to correct the difference, but it made a different difference instead.
I have the same issue with leaf blocks not stacking after being broken with a silk touch pick axe in Windows 10 bedrock 1.11.4
I have the exact same problem occurring with cod, salmon, leaves, cookies!
I have that problem with cooked salmon from 1.11.4 and from 1.12
happens in 1.13.0.4 also
Affects 1.12.0
1.13.0.18 and 1.14.0.1 also
I have attempted to do this in the most recent update, 1.14.30 to no avail. I tested it with silk touch and leaves and shears and purpur pillars like stated above. Nothing. Everything is normal. If anyone else can test or has ideas to test, please post. Otherwise i’de say this is fixed by now.
(OP here) I've tested this in a couple worlds where I had stacks of unstackable leaves, and they all stack now. Looks like this is fixed from my POV.
Idk when this bug was re-added but it exists again. I have had on a few occasions things like cobblestone, stone, and cobbled deepslate, refuse to stack together correctly. It seems to fix itself after relogging however as every time I have this issue I end up not having it later. I will try and pay more attention and get a photo/video next time it happens to make a legitimate case to reopen.
