Villagers working at wrong work station for their profession
You may be able to prevent this bug from occurring by breaking the workstation of any villager that you plan to kill, zombify, or otherwise remove from a village.
Updated by [Mod] GoldenHelmet
Steps to reproduce
- Place a bed and workstation.
- Spawn a villager (A) and wait for it to link to the bed and workstation.
- Spawn another villager (B).
- Relog.
- Kill villager A. Villager B will then link to the workstation without changing its profession to match.
- Spawn a zombie and allow villager B to be turned into a zombie villager.
- Remove the zombie and cure villager B.
Expected result
Villager B changes profession to match the workstation and works there.
Actual result
Villager B never changes profession, but works at the non-matching job site block and refreshes trades.
Note: steps 1-5 are also part of the reproduction steps for MCPE-62080. Fixing the underlying issue of villagers linking to profession blocks without changing profession to match should fix both of these bugs.

I play on a realm and sometimes my villagers are not linking up to workstations. When 3 or more people are online my villagers stop linking up to beds or workstations.
This report concerns villagers not linking at all to easily accessible POI (beds, workstations, bells), especially in multiplayer worlds. There are several other reports that address similar-looking situations that actually have very different causes. Before commenting here, please try to confirm that you are experiencing this bug, and not one of the following:
- Villagers do not always link to the closest available POI: this is intended behavior per
MCPE-45270 - Villagers detect and link to POI they cannot reach: MCPE-50441
- Villagers link to POI that are unreasonable distances from them: MCPE-63311
- Villgers cannot pathfind around obstructions to reach POI: MCPE-42912
- Villagers cannot pathfind over or through various blocks to reach POI:
MCPE-45560 - Villagers de-link and switch POI:
MCPE-46157 - Newer villagers steal POI from older villagers:
MCPE-43071 - Villages overpopulate (leaving some villagers with no POI to link to): MCPE-47212
- Villagers appear not to link to workstations, in that they won't refresh trades: precursor to
MCPE-62080andMCPE-56889
A user has offered technical analysis of this bug in this YouTube video and this comment. It is suggested that the bug is triggered by abruptly leaving a village too soon after you entered it, either by quitting the world or by using a Nether portal. This means you could work around the problem by waiting a couple of minutes before taking either of these actions. You shouldn't need to wait before walking out of the village, though.

If iron golems are not spawning in your village, please review the updated iron golem spawning information for Bedrock Edition on the wiki. For more detailed guidance on iron farms, see the Bedrock section of the Iron Golem Farming Tutorial.
- A frequent cause of iron golem spawns ceasing is that some villagers stop working. This can happen unexpectedly due to
MCPE-46157. The best way to work around that bug in an iron farm is keep all of the villagers in a single chunk. - In some cases you may need to break and replace workstations in order to get villagers to work at them, due to a workstation linking bugs. (
MCPE-62080/MCPE-56889)
Please keep in mind that the bug tracker is not designed to provide design advice or troubleshooting for builds. If you need help with an iron farm, you should visit the wiki pages linked above or reach out to the player community. Many of the users who create tutorials for farms will answer questions in comment sections or in their own Discord servers. You may also discuss builds on the Minecraft Discord.
Iron golems sometimes don’t spawn when a player has done everything he can to get a village to meet all requirements for iron golems to be spawned. In particular,
- Villagers may not be able to claim workstations in order to meet the work requirement due to
MCPE-49580. - Beds in the village may not be counted due to
MCPE-49580. - Villagers may link to workstations incompletely, making the villager unable to either work or link to a new workstation, and making the workstation unavailable to other villagers. This is the precursor to
MCPE-56889andMCPE-62080. - Some villagers (Farmers, Fishermen, and Librarians) will not work in the rain, unless their workstation is sheltered by a solid block.

@stephanie astro thank you for the update. There is another bug where after you kill a villager, another can link to its workstation without changing profession. This makes them unable to work or link to new workstations (unless you zombify and cure them). Take a look at the first 5 steps under MCPE-56889 (or this comment on MCPE-62080) and see if that applies to your survival world. If you break and replace the workstations after the villagers have grown up, they should link.
For your test world, it's normal for villagers spawned by spawn eggs to start with random professions. (If you think that's a problem, add a vote to MCPE-46034.) Villagers not picking up food is usually due to either their inventories being full, or mob griefing being turned off.

EJRI the reproduction steps I’ve given for MCPE-56889 are not necessarily the only way to get to the end result of villagers working at the wrong workstation. What’s important is that those steps give the developers a reliable way to get to that end result, so that they can examine what in the code allows it. If you can figure out another sequence of events that reliably does it, you’re welcome to add that to the ticket.
@stephanie astro Villagers working at the wrong workstation is tracked at MCPE-56889. This is actually an important clue to what is happening in your test worlds, and possibly for other users who can’t get iron golems to spawn. When a villager that is linked to a workstation gets removed from a village (either by being killed or by being timed-out while in unloaded chunks) unemployed villagers will link to the newly available workstations incompletely. They do not change profession and do not work, but they tie up the workstation. If you have enough villagers like this it will prevent iron golems from spawning because of the new work requirement in 1.16.
MCPE-62080 is also related to this problem.
Edit: @stephanie astro also, why are you still on 1.16.0.68 beta? 1.16.0 release and 1.16.20.50 beta are available.
It is possible for an unemployed villager to link to a workstation incompletely if another villager had been linked to it and was then dropped from the dweller's list, either by being killed or by being left in an unloaded chunk for too long. This is the first step in two other bugs, MCPE-62080 and MCPE-56889. The dropping from the dweller's list also explains why your villagers are desynching from their beds. That happens with workstations too, and you may find your villagers reshuffling their job sites if you have extra villagers or more than one villager of a type. That's tracked at MCPE-43071 and MCPE-46157. Are you are spending a lot of time 60-80 blocks from the center of your village?
Thank you for your report!

Resolving this report as Cannot Reproduce.
This report was originally created during the 1.16 betas after changes were made to iron golem spawning conditions. Once those changes were clarified, the report was kept open because another bug, MCPE-49580, could prevent the spawning conditions from being fulfilled. Another possible contributor preventing the spawning conditions from being fulfilled was also identified in the workstation linking issue behind MCPE-62080 and MCPE-56889, but that is minor in comparison. Now that MCPE-49580 is fixed, we have no reason to think any specific bug is preventing iron golem spawns.
Please keep in mind that the bug tracker is not designed to provide design advice or troubleshooting for builds. If you need help with an iron farm, you should visit the wiki pages linked in the workaround panel or reach out to the player community. Here is a link to the Minecraft Discord.
@Robert Parker: villagers working at the wrong workstation is tracked at MCPE-56889.
@YaYa: villagers changing trades and professions after being traded with is tracked at MCPE-62080.
Those two issues have the same root cause: when a villager dies or leaves or disappears from a village some time after reloading while an unemployed villager is in the village, the unemployed villager will link to the newly-available workstation without updating its profession. Fortunately, that issue is reported to be fixed in the current beta.
@YaYa, re: Parrots and nether portals: what you describe seems to match MCPE-28234, but that ticket is old enough that it would be better for you to create a new ticket. Please include exact steps to reproduce the issue of parrots teleporting to you from a different dimension. The parrots sometimes disappearing partially fits MCPE-66818, so you may want to follow that ticket.
@Danny: the tickets you suggested for Yaya are for Java Edition, so they are not directly relevant.
@Gravity Boots & @Shannon Young: thank you for the video and the new theory about persistent entities moving into a chunk triggering despawns. I will update after I've watched the video.
@Ryan Dussinger: we have a fairly new report open on the name-tagged entity issue you describe. Please add any new information you have to MCPE-101295.
UPDATE: @Gravity Boots: when I follow your video link it says "This upload does not exist."
Re: Why doesn't this bug cause mobs to duplicate? It could be that whenever a mob with a given UniqueID number loads, it checks for and removes any mobs from neighboring chunks with matching UniqueID numbers. This could be part of the normal process for handling a mob moving from one chunk to another.
UPDATE #2: I've tested the nametagged mobs theory and the and the pushing a persistent mob into a chunk with other mobs theory. I made platform with 50 villagers and a few pets all named "Charlie," and I could not get any to disappear with different combinations of saving and loading, nether travel, and pushing new persistent mobs into the chunk.
You can tell from the angle of the head that the villager in the picture is working at the workstation. This issue is tracked at MCPE-56889.
Is this still an issue in the latest version? The release of 1.16.100 today fixed the related bugs MCPE-62080 and MCPE-56889, and that makes me think it may have fixed this issue as well. Since I was never able to reproduce the original report, I cannot be sure.
If anyone is able to reproduce this issue, please reply and the report will be reopened.

In the video, the weapon smith is not using the composter (you can see he was not looking directly at it). In his algorithm of "wandering randomly" he happened to wander around the composter. Villagers when wandering often insist to stay in a very specific place.
@Bernardo Gomes Negri: I believe the video does show the weapon smith working at the composter. You can tell by the way he turns his head toward it with a slight downward tilt. Villagers in Bedrock Edition do not look directly at their job blocks per MCPE-43207.
Here is a video of a librarian restocking his trades at a blast furnace:
In 1.16 the incomplete linking described here in steps 1 - 5 can block iron golem spawning. See
MCPE-65202.Also affects Nintendo Switch version 1.16.1. I commented on this in MCPE-64157 but will attach the images here too as it may be helpful.
The related issue
MCPE-62080is reported to be fixed in 1.16.100.51. Depending on how that was fixed, this issue may be fixed as well.Tested after 1.16.100 release and can no longer create a villager who works at the wrong workstation.
Note that if you already have a villager working at the wrong workstation, you may have to break and replace either the workstation or the villager to clear the problem.
