Mobs can't move through deep water
All the animals in my world seem to have a preference for sea over land... please fix! Means I have to dive underwater to collect drops and difficult to herd.

Possibly related to MCPE-229.
Out of curiosity, if you fill in the bottom of the pool so the water is only two blocks deep, will the zombie start chasing you?
Duplicate of MCPE-992 , please use the search function to see if your bug has already been submitted. Currently over 35% of tickets are being closed as duplicate.
Resolved MCPE-55 and MCPE-262 as invalid, thanks. I believe MCPE-204 may be the result of a bug (an off-by-one error, see my comment on that ticket). I believe that MCPE-992, while not worded as a bug, may also be the result of a bug. I've tested it at length and mobs seem incapable of moving through deep water; I cannot imagine that this behavior is intended.
Keep in mind that when these tickets were filed, feature and improvement suggestions were also being tracked for MCPE, and they would occasionally get misreported as bugs. There was no reason to close them at that time, since they would have been acceptable as non-bugs.
If you think the behavior described in this ticket is the result of a bug, please explain what the bug is. Is there an animated lava texture included in the game, but it fails to animate? If that's the case, maybe it's a bug. If there's no animated lava texture, it's a potential improvement to media assets, not a bug.
If you find anything else, please let me know.
Both in Survival and Creative, animals get stuck in deep water.
Easiest way to reproduce
- In Creative:
- Start new world
- Go near the shore
- Spawn lots of sheep or cows onshore
- Fly up and watch
Naturally lots of the animals end up in the water. But some of them get stuck in the same position. They can turn, and bob, but don't seem to move.
Sometimes by knocking the animal, it starts moving, and can swim around.
- In Survival:
- Start new world
- Run around until you find some animals near the shore
- Climb up into a tree and watch.
Same here. Some animals get stuck in the same position. They can turn, and bob, but don't seem to move.
This issue is a duplicate of MCPE-992, but that issue has not been updated with affected version since 0.6.1. Please update MCPE-992 before you close this issue.
(I tested on Xperia Z, but according to the comments in MCPE-992, it is not device dependant..)
By the way, MCPE-992 is the highest voted PE issue.
Please please please fix....
It's a bit silly herding your sheep with a snorkel instead of a crook

I also noticed and am frustrated with this tendency. I thought animals like and spawn on grass only to see them constantly swimming. It makes it difficult like mentioned to sheer sheep since have to dive for wool after locking the sheers on em long enough. Then is a big task to coax the sheep on land long enough to eat grass before returning to the water. Think this would make it hard for chickens to lay eggs too if that is possible. (I'm on ios ipod G4)
It may be connected with a world renderer annoyance - world like 256x256 should not have much water, instead more land (it will be easier to find mushrooms, cacti etc if there will be more land). So if you somehow got a world with extreme lot of water then they will spawn on woter. But it's only my thoughts. and i noticed it too. diving just to get my food...
It sure seems like they get "stuck" in the water to me. Makes me wonder if they are looking at the elevation of the underwater terrain and deciding it's too steep to navigate, as if it were above ground, or something similar...
Animals in water surely are annoying. Need to make them smarter than that. They should be attracted to grassy areas, and possibly wheat plantations.
My animals seem to prefer water too. I've pushed animals to shore while swimming. Then I was able to sheer a sheep that had been at sea most of it's life. Some of the "rescued" animals just jumped right back into the water. Silly creatures!
Yeah, I had 2 chickens in the ocean which I spent 30 mins trying to get into a pen just outside the water. As soon as I get them to land, they just jump back in the water and swim back to the same place! (so I just killed those 2 suckers, so annoying). Argh, chickens are the hardest animal to round up. Need to lure them with wheat!
Happens to me all the time, in different worlds and mcpe versions, this must be solved now!
Hatest bug ever!
So will mojang will fix this freaking bug that bug happens on the first passive mobs
Fix this!!!
good point, its werid how animals stay in water all the time.

I made a little progress in testing this and wrote some comments on
MCPE-934. I'll probably link the rest of these tickets as duplicates of that one eventually...I think it's because of this issue...https://mojang.atlassian.net/browse/MCPE-934
It all makes sense that the mobs would act that way since they forget there AL when in stationary water. The lands should have less water per meter (block) anyways.
I think the world needs less water(maybe only 10% water) but at the edges have water like on classic.
Ya, it seems that mobs fail to understand their position when they are in deep water or lava, which results in them not moving.
I've been working on my farm and having animals in the water maks them much easier to trap and push trough long tunnels
Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
It is still a problem in 0.6.1, although mobs can get out of stationary water if land is near. Mobs in oceans, though, don't move.
This has been an issue ever since pocket edition was released
Yea, when I spawn animals in the water, they act like if there were "Bobbing" on that level of water. Anyone get what I'm saying?
This is an issue when with 0.7.0 and 0.7.1 . I'm not sure about 0.7.2, but if someone would like to add if they have that version. Also, it says on the wiki that it was intentional that mobs are attracted to water.
I can confirm that cows, pigs, sheep and chickens stay in the water in version 0.7.2 alpha.
(Only on rare occasions, a couple of them manage to exit the water themselves.)
also in 0.7.3!!!!
The bug still applies to v.0.7.4.
We will redo the AI system to port the new PC code to MCPE in either 0.8 or 0.9, it will probably be fixed in those versions!
I have exactly the same problem. Only animals on the sea....
So with the AI system, mobs will walk over deep water, and hostile mobs will be more intelligent!? :O
Does this mean mobs can wear armour and hold items
No, unless Mojang decides to add it as a feature. Mob AI is basicly how mobs behave after they are spawned in, such as how they move and react to different circumstances.
The bug is in 0.7.5.
Yiihaaaa! We're all looking forwards to go shearing the sheep and still keep our boots dry!
Thank you! : )))
It isn't fixed yet, hopefully it will be fixed for 0.8 though.
A really annoying bug, hard to get wool because once I sheer the sheep it won't go back to land to eat and if I eventually push it back it goes back in before eating :/
Please, if proper AI handling is too much work to make it into 0.8, then please make a quick fix in 0.8.
If any mob falls into water, and a land block is nearby, make the mob go to the land block and not to another water block.
Won't be as realistic, but at least the most voted bug can be ticked as fixed. Then improvements can be added in 0.9.
This bug is getting a little annoying. I have WAY too many animals in the water - including a brown sheep. (Just to clarify, this one was naturally spawned - no mods) It gets annoying because you can't get the sheep to regrow their wool until they find grass.
Oh, and Vegard's idea is a pretty good idea. At least any new coloured/colored (Australian English!) sheep will not get stuck in the water.
New AI!
