Massive Lag when looking into direction of hoppers
I have an underground sorter system. It is not visible from anywhere above ground. I have about 40 fps when playing, but as soon as I look into the direction of the sorter system my fps drops to 10 and stays there until I look away.
I might want to add that not a single graphics setting could change that fact.

Is this still an issue in the most recent versions (currently that is 1.10.2, or 16w43a) of Minecraft? If so, please update the affected versions and help us keeping this ticket updated from time to time. If you are the owner/reporter of this ticket, you can modify the affected version(s) yourself.
Alright, I did some testing. I put the schematic in a world, and can confirm that certain parts of the process have a significant effect on FPS, on 13w37b. I normally get 60FPS, but while items are being sorted, my FPS drops down to 10-25. However, I have the same problems using this sorter in 1.5.2, except I have higher FPS to start with (~85) and it only drops down to about 40.
This only occurs while items are moving through certain parts of the machine. Specifically, the hoppers with comparators. According to the debug screen, the culprit is "root.gameRenderer.level.updatechunks.sort".
Large quantities of hoppers by themselves don't seem to cause me any trouble, unlike MC-14983. I built a solid block of them, 8x5x11, threw items in the top ones, with no hit to performance. I also made a large winding loop of hoppers feeding into each other, once again, with no performance problems. if I replicate just the hopper/comparator/chest section, that causes some performance degradation, but only about 10FPS.
I then tried knocking off large portions of the sorter. The more sections I removed, the less the FPS dropped while it was running. With only 1/4 of the sorter, my FPS only dropped to 45.
Not really sure what's causing this. Maybe lighting updates from the repeaters and torches. Maybe redstone updates. Maybe the comparators. I think Mojang's simply going to have to run a profiler on it while it's running. I'll attach a world with just the sorter in it to make it easier to test. Regardless, the issue was there in 1.5.2, it's only made more apparent by the general loss of FPS in 1.6.
William Grates, I suggest you update the Affects Version/s field to include the latest snapshot, so that it will show up in searches for current issues.
I made an interesting observation today: After installing Optifine, the FPS-Drop only happened while looking into the direction of the chests, similar to MC-14983. So at least it should be possible to reduce the problem into something like that. Also: Why is this bug still marked as unconfirmed?

Please force a crash by pressing F3 + C for 10 seconds while ingame and attach the crash report,
Can you zip and attach the world (or the relevant part of it) ?
So, I deleted absolutely everything from my world except for the sorter system which contains the huge amounts of hoppers. I returned everything back to natural terrain, then set everything around the sorter system to air. My general FPS increased quite a lot, but the problem is still there. Looking away from the hoppers gets me 75 FPS. Simply turning around will drop the FPS down to 25.
I'll attach screenshots, the crash report and the zipped world now.
Confirmed.
To reproduce it's enough to look in the direction of the sorter, regardless if the sorter is visible or hidden behind a hill.
Yes. As I said it does not matter if it's visible or not. I just removed everything else to make sure it's actually from the hoppers and nothing is interfering. Also the screenshots have been taken in 1.5.2, so I will add that version too.
I just verified that the hoppers cause this. I made a superflat world with nothing but a huge block of hoppers. Looking away gives me 125 FPS. Turning around and looking at the block gives me 16 FPS. Ill upload the world right away for anyone who wants to test it too.
Also confirmed for test world.
That reminds me of
MC-5534where also a log of non-cubic, transparent blocks are involved.... and MC-7895
They seem connected. The interesting part with hoppers though is that it only causes lag while looking into their direction. That makes absolutely no sense. With Fences it's because they have a lot of sides to render I think and it also causes lag when looking away.
Any updates on this? Anything from Mojang? It ruins the game for me
Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
This is still an issue as well in the current version of the patch. I notice a detectable drop in FPS when looking at my hoppers in my creative world. Please fix asap.
Still an issue as of this post date.
Still an issue as of post date, using 1.7.2.
I still have this issue in 1.7.4.
Tested with the Hopper Lag world that is attached, FPS drop from 50 to 8 on my laptop.
The Pie Chart in the Shift + F3 screen does not change significantly between looking at the hoppers and not looking at the hoppers.
Probably relates to the issue where looking towards many chests would cause lag (I think Optifine helped the lag; it then only occurred when the chests were actually visible)
Yes, this still applies to the latest version of Minecraft (1.8.1), and the Launcher (1.5.3).
Reopened, thanks.

Confirmed for 16w15a and 16w15b
Confirm for 1.9.3 pre-2
Confirmed for 1.9.3 pre-3

Relates to
MC-1138Likely affects version 1.11.2 as
MC-1138Confirmed for 18w31a
Does anyone still experience this in 1.14.3 pre-2? I just did some testing and I'm not seeing any noticeable FPS drop while looking into the direction of 47k hoppers.
this still happens in 20w27a?
