So I was going through the caves and I saw a chicken then I went into spectator to see if it was a bug and I was a LOT of chickens in the caves.

So I was going through the caves and I saw a chicken then I went into spectator to see if it was a bug and I was a LOT of chickens in the caves.

This still needs to be addressed. This is leading to 100's and 100's of zombies underground in multiple areas never despawning which leads to huge TPS drops on Multiplayer servers. Can confirm this issue is prevalent on my server too.

@slicedlime I did some singleplayer, 100% vanilla testing of this, ZERO mods, world was created in 100% vanilla. Waited for chicken jockeys to spawn. Those chicken jockeys are laying eggs and have the persistence required tag when they should not. This is NOT limited to bukkit, spigot, paper, whatever. This is a vanilla, base game, current issue. Tested in 1.17.1

Does MC-229490 describe your issue?
No, MC-229490 is referring to an abundance of them which is a separate issue.
The issue I am referring to is that the chickens that spawn as part of a Chicken Jockey are naturally spawning without the proper NBT data.

If your server is using Paper (or anything similar such as Spigot, Bukkit, etc.) as the server mod, then this is a problem caused by that mod.
Update, or ask the owner to update their server mod; I believe this issue is already resolved at this point on their end.

Could've been a jockey that suffocated. Similar to MC-160201
As far as I understand, "jockey chickens" should have a flag set that makes them despawn like hostile mobs and should prevent them from laying eggs. Unless something changed in that regard, that flag probably should not reset after the rider died, causing the chicken to continue to not lay eggs and eventually despawn. The suffocated jockey theory can only work if something now causes that flag to reset.
Sorry I haven't said anything I thought it would take a lot longer for anyone to see this, but there were other chickens elsewhere (way to many for it to be jockeys), so I don't know why their spawning.
P.S. I guess this could make a cool feature as "Cave Chickens"
Worth noting (as mentioned in
MC-229663) that these chickens can lay eggs which zombies then pick up, causing the zombies to become persistent/unable to despawn, causing mob cap to fill up over time, especially in frequent areas of servers like the world spawnIf this issue occurs for you, please share a screen capture with the following information:

We've been having this on a Vanilla 1.17 server where I have OP. The /data Get Entity returned an error but F3 shows the entity as a Chicken. See attached screen shot.
I am running Fabric client side for REI and Voxen minimap but server is Vanilla. We've also had a large number of chickens in the Nether.
We have players that reported seeing chickens spawning from zombie spawners. Our guess is that an error is occurring in the ChickenJockey chance and instead of spawning the jockey, its just spawning a regular chicken.

Following up. Got it. Attached is the screen shot of the Entity data of the "cave chicken." The value for "isChickenJockey" is "0b"

EonRaptor your images also show a non vanilla environment with spigot and bukkit enabled
Our server is 100% vanilla. The only change is my resource pack changes zombies to have random skins. We have actually had to purge zombies using /kill commands to stop lag.
EDIT. Added a screenshot submitted by a server member. Also they should despawn unless they are holding something more valuable than just junk items.
Screenshots do not tell us more about this issue.
1. Please attach a sample of your server logs. You can find your server logs under the logs folder.
2. Please submit a screenshot of the output of the command /data get entity <press tab> <enter> when you aim at one of those chickens.

Spun up a new fully vanilla server, attached is the F3 on a chicken showing y21 and the output of /data get entity.
This chicken has IsChickenJockey: 0b as well.
After watching the chicken a bit, it laid an egg, which is the problem with these non-ChickenJockey chickens spawning in caves. The Zombies are picking up the eggs.

And just got server log from the vanilla server. Attached.
Server log still shows the bukkit resource pack. Just loading the world from the bukkit server in a vanilla server does not count as a repro case in vanilla - chickens in the world caused by a modded server will obviously still be there when loaded by a vanilla one.
Seems to be caused by bukkit.
This was fixed in paper https://github.com/PaperMC/Paper/issues/5994. Please update.
We had the issue when our server was "vanilla" as servers such as bukkit / spigot ETC was not available for 1.17. yet.
