Bug ported from a recent Java update? MC-251859
The sound is so loud it makes me think I’m being hit by a creeper exploding when I take a surprise hit. It’s probably loud because it plays for each piece of equipment you are wearing.
This sounds plays every time armor getting changed. For example losing its durability or repairing through mending
I can also confirm this behavior. It's important to note that this sound is only produced client-side. To visually and auditorily demonstrate this, I've attached two videos.

This is also produced while gliding with elytra in survival mode.
Seems to be whenever the item's NBT updates.

Equip sound is still present in 1.19 pre-release 2, mining coal (getting xp) produces the sound.
Issue also remains present during elytra flight.

frustrating, because the original "glitch"- not hearing armor equip when equipping through the inventory- was hardly an issue and more like a harmless long-standing quirk of the game

Issue can also be reproduced by collecting experience orbs while wearing damaged armor enchanted with Mending
this issue issue is finally fixed in 1.19 pre-release 4 (or 1.19 release candidate 1)
