Hopper: java.lang.IllegalStateException: failed to create a child event loop - Caused by AntiVirus / Firewall software
- This issue is most commonly caused by a broken installation of Avast! free edition Anti-virus software. A reinstallation of Avast! and a reboot usually fixes it.
- McAfee anti-virus software (and derivatives) are also know to cause this issue, and currently the only known solution is to uninstall this software to correct the problem.
- Also Outpost security may cause that issue.
- This error also occurs when Java tries to open a socket on the IPv6 stack, but could't get a connection to the outside world. Try forcing the use of the IPv4 stack by adding -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true to the JVM Arguments in your launch installation (to edit your JVM arguments, click "Edit" on the profile you are using, then click "More Options").

As indicated in MC-34749, a workaround to solving this crash is by disabling/removing McAffee and Avast antivirus / firewall software.
In that case I will mark this as duplicate of MC-34749. Antivirus and firewalls have been causing users problems, and currently disabling them corrects the issue.
Duplicate of MC-34749. Note that this issue does have a workaround, but is not actually resolved.

Your Java version is out of date! Please update your Java to the latest version (1.7.0_45): http://www.java.com/en/download/.
- When using a 32-bit browser on a 64-bit operating system the automatic version detection will only show the 32-bit version of Java, the 64-bit version needs to be downloaded manually: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp.

For me, the same/similar stacktrace/exception was caused also by firewall. In my case Comodo. (I had purposefully blocked javaw.exe, as it can be used by all kinds of software, including those with malign intentions.)
The reason (for my case, normal single-player gaming) why it pops up now is apparently because previously Minecraft used a direct connection within a JRE (running both the single-player server and the client), or at least something else than a network socket, to communicate between the server and the client, but now it apparently wants a real socket, even if it is between the same JRE (or at least the same host). Real socket means network layer firewalls can now catch it. Oops.
I didn't disable/uninstall anything, I just adjusted the firewall's rules to allow outgoing access from javaw.exe. Not ideal (as it would be better if I could get it to block javaw in general, but allow access when the starter of the javaw.exe was minecraft.exe), but the solution shall do for now.
Isn't that pointless that a "Firewall" blocks access to localhost ? Don't get it...
Counter-question would be, isn't it pointless to use a network socket to communicate between two threads (or even processes) of basically the same application running from the same user account?
Typically localhost access should be ok, especially on a typical consumer PC, but there are cases/situations where an application should be blocked from any network connections, including localhost. It is more appropriate that the default of a firewall should be "block all access" for any application that is not specifically allowed to have some access (with installation providing a bunch of rules to have less annoying times figuring out all the operating system processes etc.)
The difference is between occasionally giving permission to an app that for some reason needs it, or never noticing something, possibly nasty, happening.
I'd guess many a firewall has a default rule of allowing localhost access to any process which isn't specifically disallowed to have it, but... it is the compromise between convenience and security. I like to err on the side of security.
I get this bug, trying to open any single-player world. I have Avast antivirus, and have for a couple weeks now. My worlds would load just fine until yesterday, it seemed as though there was server-side lag (block lag, teleporting to previous places, etc.), when playing my single-player worlds. And then, today, I get this error.

MC-43077. Getting this issue too. Currently using Avast! Premier. Only way I can get the server to run is to disable the firewall. The most recent update of Avast! seems to fix this problem (at least with Avast!).
I have Sophos and I have disabled Sophos firewall and computer firewall. I also went into the settings and added minecraft and java as a trusted app. Still cannot create a new world! Still get the "Failed to create child loop". Any more ideas??
Just to put in my 2 cents, i have avast premier also, and i just checked to see if there were any updates. Yayy to my surprise i had an update to go tp version 2014.9.0.2013. After a required reboot i can finally open the game. Before the reboot i added minecraft.exe to the list of application rules setting it to all connections, and i also set java to all connections. I have a feeling the update is what fixed it. Good luck all!!!!
I managed to fix the issue. Although I had turned the firewall off in Sophos, it really was not "off". I had to go into msconfig in the servies tab and disable the Sophos firewall. Minecraft works! And it also fixed my internet browser issues. Hope this helps others.
I dont have a firewall - I dont even have antivirus. And I still get this error.
i hope this bug is fixed...
There is nothing to fix on the side of Minecraft as it's an issue of the host computer.
It appears I posted a duplicate earlier. Anyway, I turned off all of the avast shields and disabled every firewall on my computer and I get the exact same issue with an identical crash report.
Can you just explain me step by step how to solve it?
Please visit the #minecrafthelp channel for further support.
Completely uninstalling my antivirus software fixed the issue. It was avast! Free antivirus. The software was apparently blocking the game without notification.
Invalid
Caused by overprotective security systems and/or Malware, not an issue on Mojang's side.

I am seeing this crash a lot with mcafee.
Every issue I report redirects me here and says it is Avast. I have gone so far as to completely remove Avast and any malware program and firewall on my comp. I have reinstalled Java and I still get this issue.
Hey guys, so I have had Minecraft for a while, no problems at all. Just a week ago, I tried to play my world, and the game crashed and gave me the java.lang.IllegalStateException: failed to create a child event loop problem. I also tried to join multiple servers and got this: java.lang.NullPointerException: group. I do NOT have any mods, I have a good computer (Windows 7), and I can do full graphics and render with no lag. I don't have McAfee and I temporarily disabled Windows Firewall. I have also reinstalled java and Minecraft. The only thing left to check is Microsoft Security Essentials, it hasn't blocked anything before, but It is constantly updating. Do you guys have any ideas to what else i could to to troubleshoot?
I have been dealing with this error for five-six months already. Uninstalling McAffe completely does not do the trick.
The only option for my side of the situation is getting my own PC and try translating (or abandoning) my account.
Next time get Norton instead
Game Over...
None of the solution works for me, how do i get further support ?

Aurora Kay, the I had the same problem a few months back. I didn't have McAfee or Avast, but then on the minecraft help channel, one of the computer genius guys directed me to this program that scans my pc. I sent him a link of the results of the scan, and he pointed out a program that was bought by McAfee, and after i uninstalled it, minecraft worked fine. So i would suggest going on the mc help channel from time to time. and eventually a genius will go on. Sorry, i don't remember the program that he directed me to.
I recently got Avast updated. It must be that. Thank you so much for the help!
how do you get rid of a anti virus software
It differs slightly with the software, but usually right-clicking it and hitting the "uninstall" button works. You do need the admin username and password though. What anti-virus software do you have?
Alright, if you really think it's a duplicate, fine.
But I'm having this exact same issue and I have no antivirus on my computer. I just bought Minecraft yesturday and I'm rather sad that I can't launch the most recent version...
I have absolutely NO ANTIVIRUS. I don't know what to do to fix this
Same situation here as the two gentlemen above me.
I don't have Avast or McAfee. I have tried whitelisting Java and whitelisting mincraft. I have Trend Micro, and the program works fine on another computer, and used to work fine on this one as well. Please help.
I had same but it did not happen before
MC-124797This can be also caused by a outdated version of Killer Control Center

Hope this helps: when Java was updated so if your FW or AV is blocking java, it will crash. Update rules for the appropriate sw
I still don't understand why java need network access for a single player local mode
Some background for why java/minecraft needs network access for single player...
Depending on the case, the starter application may try to connect to outside world to check your Mojang/minecraft account.
The single player minecraft was changed at some point to work as a local client and a local server, with full network connection (to localhost) in between. The change made some coding simpler, but also some things less efficient, and made many a firewall to barf about it - and some barf silenty, leaving users to wonder about errors like in this issue.
Depending on the particular FW/AV etc. application, some are smart enough to allow most loopback network connections, but some do not as they consider any and all network connections just as paranoid way whether they connect back to the same computer or to external network.
I found a different solution, where neither firewall nor antivirus were the culprit.
This error also occurs when Java tries to open a socket on the IPv6 stack, but could't get a connection to the outside world. Try forcing the use of the IPv4 stack by adding -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true to the launch options.
Thanks, reddi, added your comment to the panel in the description.
Soluted as "invalid" but affected versions should include 1.13 and 1.13.1.
Sometimes I reboot and it doesn't appear, but this time it still appears after rebooting.
It has been normal for a long time even I'm running 360-safe (360安全卫士) and Windows Defender.
Now 360-safe is not running. Should I close some functions of Windows Defender?
Hey Reddi or anyone else who knows this. How do I open up the minecraft Launch options? Sry where do I put them under the launch options??
I have another solution for this problem. The antivirus and java arguments did not work for me.
I found that you can refresh your ports by doing the following.
1) Open a cmd.exe window as administrator (You can type command into the Start Menu - Run box, then right click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator)
2) Type "netsh winsock reset" without the quotes
3) reboot.
This immediately fixed the problem for me. Using 1.13.1, trying to connect to a Cubedhost server.
Confirmed in 1.13.2
This can also be caused by Proton VPN, likely because it's misconfigured or does something strange at the network level. Turning off my VPN fixed the issue.
pls helppppppp!!!

These solutions worked for the exact same problems for many people.
What * may * have worked for me, it's far too early to tell, is this.
A temporary solution for me was to
A thing to note
This is everything I can think of and every solution I could find on the internet related to this exact bug that helped people.
My Experience
Without any changes at all it suddenly stopped working. I didn't install anything, or remove anything, I had Kapersky which has never given me problems for years and I even completely disabled and closed out of it which didn't help, Windows didn't do any updates, I have no idea why it suddenly broke but it just did leaving me a bit stranded.
Suggestion to the Mods
@Galaxy_2Alex May I suggest adding these to the possible resolutions box above, it would probably help future people with this problem.
Also one thing to note:
Minecraft does not play well with VPNs, so make sure all VPNs are disabled (preferably uninstalled). I just had one user who got this error when trying to open worlds or enter servers with a VPN on.
Some VPN software implement hacks that allow select apps to connect to their service while letting other apps connect to the internet without VPN. Unfortunately, some of these does not work with Minecraft and would make Minecraft run into this issue.
If this is the case, try turning off your VPN.
I have this problem nothing is solved the only thing and that the 1.17.1 and the snapshot I can not access it but the later versions yes and I tried everything I found the problem lately when I updated to windows 11 and nothing is solved someone some ideas.
Ah the problem arose even after downloading the new launcher, now I can only play the new versions using third-party apps
Hi. I have the same problem, I upgraded to Windows 11 and now I have the same error when entering minecraft. Have you solved this problem? Can you help me?

Then they extract it into their folder in C: / Program Files / Java, they paste the folder they extracted there, they go to their launcher, they edit the java path, they put the jawaw.exe that is inside the folder and nothing, to to enjoy

Hello
I have done all the possible procedures found on the web and I still cannot solve the problem, I have windows 11, but before having windows 11 the problem already existed
as someone wrote above, had to download newest JDK from oracle site and set the java path to it in minecraft launcher
