Lighting Glitch in 1.2.1 - [Smooth Lighting]
When placing a torch in the 1.2.1 update, the surrounding blocks do not update leaving some bad shadowing. Hope this helps and that you can fix this issue quickly! Thanks!

As a temporary workaround until this issue is fixed, you can turn off the smooth lighting option in the video settings to make things brighter.

As a workaround, go to Settings > Video > Smooth Lighting and turn it off.
I have noticed the same thing. All edges where blocks intersect don't appear lit properly, and lighting on segmented blocks such as fences show separate shadows on each rendered cuboid.
Confirmed on Windows 10 since 1.2.1.
Placing a torch makes little difference to the area around it, even with the brightness at 100%:
As a workaround, turning off smooth lighting and replacing a torch should fix the light levels.
Same problem on android in 1.2.1.

Same issue on Xbox One. Caused by patch 1.2.1
When playing in low brightness mining got way harder. I attached for better understanding a Screenshot with 38% Brightness in a normal scriptmining situation. I'm not able to see that the block above is lapis without moving further to the screen... When I would play with a higher brightness much more general atmosphere would be lost.
It's not just torches. I've used glow stone and torch and still shows dark. Very annoying.
It's on Windows 10 in 1.2.1.1 as well.
Yeah, I'm seeing this on Win10 too.. Really ugly/excessive edge shadows along block edges, and torches don't seem to be lighting properly because of that..
I am having the same issue with Glowstone, the shadows are harsh and dark and located in places that are incorrect for the build.

Can confirm on windows 10 1.2.1 has the same issue. Using the workaround with disabling the smooth lighting for now although it doesn't look the best. At least I can see now.

Still broken in 1.2.2. Disappointing that they didn't fix a very large bug like this, but fixed other bugs that i had no idea existed...

Soo, is this issue a bug and will get fixed or is it an intended feature?
It's 18 days now and no fix, also it didn't got "added to internal bug list".
It is one of the bugs listed in the changelog for the 1.2.5 beta build (available for Android devices): https://feedback.minecraft.net/knowledgebase/articles/1814653-minecraft-android-beta-1-2-5-build-1
This appears to be fixed in 1.2.3.6 on Windows 10.
This is fixed in beta 1.2.5.12 and 1.2.5.15 on Xbox One.
