Piston Crash Bug (Reproducible)
Included is a world file. There should be a piston portcullis immediately in front of the user once they spawn.
What I expect to happen: I flick the lever and the bottom piston row successfully double extends, then retracts.
What happens: If I flick the lever (might need to do so twice), the pistons in the bottom double extender row suddenly pause, then fire randomly (which they normally should not), then the game crashes, all in that order.

I created a machine for the sole purpose for testing if/when pistons bug out and how they do so. Two weeks ago I posted two results, the first I added to MCPE-16314, which I deemed most relevant to the issue, and is still marked as "Resolved: Fixed". The second I added to MCPE-28260 at a moderator's request, which I questioned due to the lack of any signs of crashing when I found the bug; I have yet to receive a reply.
Thus, I have decided to repost these here. The first bug is that the piston deletes the block it moves into. Upon closer inspection, it seems the piston extends, begins to retract but instantly begins moving, gets stuck in extended position with the arm inside of T2, then deletes the block when it decides to retract. This occurs when T1 is air and T2 is a normal block.
The second bug is that the piston carries a block sideways then (the piston) turns into an item drop. Again, upon closer inspection the piston spits out T1, begins extending right as it is moved by the machine, gets its arm stuck in T2, proceeds to bring T2 to T1's starting location as the piston is moved back, then the piston drops itself as an item. This occurs when both T1 and T2 are normal blocks.
Both of these glitches appear to stem from extending/ed pistons remaining movable if powered in a special way.

(!)Warning: Using Note Blocks creates a chance for the game to crash. This seems to be limited to just Note Blocks for now.
A schematic (with original coordinates) of the original machine is below:
Facing positive z, x (left): 165, x (right): 161
z: 10

| [RB] | P> | PA | SB | <P |
z: 9

| NB | S* | NB |
z: 8
| T1 | T2 |
Key:

| < | Right |
| v | Down |
| * | Towards the screen |
| NB | Normal block |
| RB | Redstone block |
| [RB] | Remove this block to start the machine, replace to stop |
| SB | Slime block |
| P | Regular Piston |
| S | Sticky Piston |
| O | Observer |
| T1, T2 | Testing blocks, known to change the end result of the machine |
P.S.: Sorry mods, I just didn't feel like this was getting the right attention in what I consider to be a dead ticket and a separate and/or blanket issue.
Pistons turning into stone is covered in the linked ticket MCPE-28260.

This is similar to MCPE-28260, but the crash only occurs when the player is pulled. It may have a related cause to MCPE-175206.
Here is a video of a simplified setup that can reproduce the crash. https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/609927246106460170/1160124306286706698/Screen_Recording_20231007_005839_One_UI_Home.mp4

My survival world crashes when a row of pistons extends in the nether. Can't play it anymore unless I restore a backup of my world where I'm overworld. Perhaps our issues are the same. Same version on android. 1.2.3 on windows 10. Both crashing on piston extend.
It seems this issue, besides crashing, also results in pistons breaking each other (they drop the item, not just deletion), and pistons getting transformed into smooth stone. Basically, when multiple pistons are interacting, like double/triple extenders, and the timings are too short such that the pistons' behavior is affected by the random update order, issues begin to arise. Originally when a piston timing was affected by random tick order it would either work or not work. Now it either breaks the piston, turns it into stone, or crashes.
Affects 1.2.5.15, but requires different timings to trigger (due to the slower observers).
Just letting you know that we're looking into this.
This can also delete chests, as shown in
MCPE-29241(Any contents will drop though, thankfully)It can delete anything (bedrock included) and in some cases transmute pistons into various stone types
Also, it can change one or multiple pistons/sticky to stone: DSUX3167.MOV
Affects 1.2.8. If you look at the attached sample, the crash only happens for me when the double piston on the right is fully extended and tries to be pushed by by the pistons on the left while they’re retracting. Only the photo beginning with A2EE breaks in my testing.
Also, in some other testing I thought iron bars being the object pushed had something to do with it, but that’s not the case. However, iron bars are the only object that has caused transmutation for me. Pistons on the right just disappeared (no drops) a couple of times, though rare. Crashing is far more common.
I forgot to mention that if you reduce the redstone wiring on the left, thus creating a longer decay in the comparator loop, even A2EE works without breaking. It seems to be something about a piston in a changing state being pushed by a piston with too quick of an actuating pulse.
Here is a simpler test setup. Now, if you decrease the repeater on the left OR completely remove the 2 repeaters on the right it should crash every time. With the setup pictured it BARELY works and seems to be affected by the unreliable repeater bug. So this setup is right on the edge of functionality. (Oddly enough 2 tick repeater on the first setup seems to always deliver 2 ticks to the comparator circuit. I don’t know, but that’s for a different bug report.)
Also, as seen in the picture, one of my tests resulted in transmutation while all the others simply crashed.
Does this count? (I was sent here by a mod)
For those who can't load it. It's a crazy slime block contraption where a sticky piston facing perpendicular to the direction of movement and an observer powering it are moved side to side by two regular pistons powered by redstone blocks on top of the contraption. There are two quartz blocks lined up side by side so the sticky piston should always have something in front of it. I remove the redstone block that is stopping the machine. Here's what the piston does on each stroke of the machine.
Stroke 1 (back stroke): nothing.
Stroke 2 (forward stroke): piston extends and stays put.
Stroke 2.5: piston retracts.
Stroke 3: nothing.
Stroke 3.5: piston extends.
Stroke 4: piston remains extended and stays put, then begins to retract.
Stroke 4.5: piston continues retracting.
Stroke 5: nothing.
Stroke 5.5: piston extends.
Stroke 6: piston remains extended and stays put.
Stroke 6.5: piston retracts.
Stroke 7: nothing.
Stroke 7.5: piston extends.
Stroke 8: piston partially retracts, leaves first block in place, and moves with the machine, it's arm clipping into the second quartz block. It then extends again.
Stroke 8.5: the piston seems extended with it's arm completely inside the quartz block in front of it.
Stroke 9: both the piston and the quartz block move with the machine. The behavior of the piston head is unclear but it seems extended.
Stroke 9.5: the piston drops as an item.
Picture of the initial setup of the machine:
A very painful bug have lost 2 worlds to it now and have noticed that the piston can turn into 3 things that i have seen so far 1. Being stone 2. Polished andcite 3. Andcite
It seems to always happen on the rectraction for fast fireing pistons.
Still affects 1.2.20.1
This is what I made on 1.2.20.1 clicked the button game will crashe but if theres no water on top it should not crash the game. It is auto refiller cauldron
Unknown, I think that is likely to be a separate bug, can you please make a new ticket for it, and add a test world please?
This bug is live again in newest beta 1.5.0.1 I use only single piston and when activate it crushes the game.
Why did you make it resolved again?? This bug is on 1.5.0.1 again, try to place a single poston with any block on front of it then powered the piston the the game will crush but if piston has noting to push it will not crush the game but if have it will crush the game, please reopened it again this bug is still have on latest beta. Please fix it
Hey developer of mojang please reopened this report this bug is on 1.5.0.1 again, I can't use piston.
@Unknown: The cause of this bug was found and fixed. Although it looks similar and might be related, the problem you're describing for 1.5.0.1 is a different bug which we're tracking as
MCPE-33072. Please add your vote to that ticket.… which has already been duplicated dozens of times. PLEASE SEARCH BEFORE CREATING A NEW REPORT, PEOPLE!
