The dragon egg includes numerous block faces which cannot be seen normally - in order to see these faces, clipping into the block is required, such as through Spectator mode. In addition, the topmost and bottommost faces are missing cullface specifications standard of other models which have faces which end up hidden by adjacent blocks.
How to reproduce
- Place down a dragon egg
- Enter Spectator mode
- Fly inside of the dragon egg
- You will find yourself inside of a stack of cuboids, with many of the faces of these cuboids completely invisible from outside
- Now place opaque blocks on the top and bottom of the egg
- Fly into these opaque blocks
- Looking closely reveals that the dragon egg faces against these blocks are still visible despite their complete occlusion
Expected results
Only faces which are visible during normal gameplay are rendered.
Actual results
Every single face of each cuboid, including the ones which are only visible if the player is inside of the dragon egg, is always rendered.
How to fix

The bug
Certain faces of blocks are still rendered even in conditions which would make them absolutely impossible to see outside of spectator mode.
This ticket only lists blocks which use the standard block rendering method and not blocks such as chests which render differently in a manner similar to entities.
Affects the following blocks, as seen in Spectator mode through an opaque solid block:
Bottom faces:
- Brewing stands
- Iron bars
- Glass panes (fix provided in
MC-122927) - Four turtle eggs (fix provided in
MC-135986) - Chorus flowers
Side faces:
- Anvils
- Bell (attachment:floor)
- Chorus flowers
Top faces:
- Anvil

I think the dragon egg issue should be MC-199238.
This is the same issue described in MC-199238.
The bug
Inside of dragon eggs, multiple faces exist that cannot normally be seen without clipping inside of the egg block.
How to reproduce
- Place a dragon egg
- Enter Spectator mode
- Fly inside the dragon egg
Expected results
The upper faces of the cuboids below the widest ones and the lower faces of the cuboids above the widest one, would not exist.
Actual results
They do.
How to fix
Get rid of these faces. The resource pack attached to MC-199238 will probably help and can be use as a guide.
The bug
The way in which the dragon egg texture is applied to the north, east, south and west faces of the block is very strange.
This, like MC-120417, appears to have originated as a result of dragon eggs being converted to json models in release 1.8, and persisted due to how strange the dragon egg texture is.
How to reproduce
Two resource packs are attached to this issue: one for use in release 1.7.10 and release 1.8, and another for use in the current version.
- Download both resource packs
- Load up version 1.7.10
- Obtain a dragon egg (you'll probably need commands due to
MC-55718) - Apply the "old" resource pack
- Inspect each side of the block
- Load up that same world in release 1.8
- Inspect the dragon egg again, while still using the resource pack
- Load up the latest version as of reading
- Apply the "new" resource pack
- Obtain a dragon egg and inspect it
Expected results
The side textures of the dragon eggs would be mapped in a way that makes sense.
Actual results
The side textures are mapped in a way that makes sense in 1.7.10. However, in 1.8 and the latest version, they are mapped seemingly randomly.
How to fix
A resource pack that completely fixes this issue is attached to this ticket, which also fixes MC-120417 and MC-199238. This model is based off of the 1.7.10 dragon egg model and therefore has the same mapping as it (with the exception of the bottom face - it was mirrored in 1.7.10, but is mapped normally in this fix). It also only uses 33 texture planes instead of vanilla's 48, so should be considerably better for performance. Also included in the resource pack is a version of the dragon egg texture which eliminates all pixels the model does not use.
I give Mojang my full permission and strong encouragement to replace vanilla's current dragon egg model with the version provided in the fix resource pack for the benefit of texture pack creators and the like worldwide. Likewise for the dragon egg texture without the unused pixels.
Yes it does, actually? MC-109087, MC-182249, MC-188459, MC-199238, MC-209947, MC-213772, MC-238734 and MC-249097 have all either been fixed or remain officially triaged, and they concern much the same issue as is happening here on other block models. The issue is that a cullface argument is missing is a bug that has been reported many times before and fixed accordingly.
In addition, MC-275792 being triaged makes this resolution even more inconsistent.
