Sometimes when killing a mob quickly, death sound does not play
Quickly killing a mob causes the death rattle sound to not play.
To Reproduce
- Spawn any mob (that is not fire resistant) in lava; notice that it will play the hurt sound upon death instead of the death sound.
Alternative
- Place down an always active repeating command block with
scoreboard players tag @e[type=skeleton] add death {HurtTime:1s} - Place an always active chain command block so that the previous command triggers it
kill @e[type=skeleton,tag=death]
- Spawn a skeleton in daylight and observe how it doesn't make the death sound (only hurt sound) when it dies/catches on fire.

Created Issue:
Sometimes when killing a mob quickly, death rattle does not play
Quickly killing a mob in one or two hits sometimes causes the death rattle sound to not play. Most notably happens with zombies.
To Reproduce:
#Obtain a sharpness 4 (or smite if working on undead) diamond sword.
#Quickly swipe at a mob with a death sound eg. spiders, zombies.
#You may notice that sometimes the mob only plays the hurt sound and there is a glitchy silence as the mob dies.I've also noticed this to happen with lets's players on Youtube so I dont think it's just me.

I've automated the testing and let it run for about 5 minutes. I'm pretty sure no zombie died without the correct sound. But while they are red, they can't be damaged anyway, so why should this work? If you want to check my test yourself, there it is:

Relates to
MC-1246.
Duplicate of MC-3735 (the lava kills/damages the mob quickly causing the sound to not play).
Sounds like MC-3735.

Likely relates to MC-3735. This is one of several things mentioned under MC-94956, however should not be resolved as a duplicate as having several closely-related issues under one ticket is frowned upon these days.
The bug
Creepers emit a hissing sound when preparing to explode. This is of course intentional, however they will still play this sound to completion even if killed. This is very commonly observed in regular PvE combat. This sound continuing to play is unhelpful as the creeper is no longer in a state of being able to explode after death.
How to reproduce
- Weaken a creeper such that it can be easily dispatched in one hit, e.g. a known amount of attacks from a given weapon, or via poison
- Kill the creeper from close range such that it has the opportunity to prepare to explode
- Note that, despite being dead, the sound continues to play in full
Expected results
The sound would either stop immediately or rapidly fade out after the creeper's health reaches 0.
Actual results
The sound keeps playing despite there not being any explosion for it to lead up to.
Notes
This same issue was previously reported under MC-1602 in late 2012. That ticket was later resolved as a duplicate of MC-4921, an issue that was fixed soon after, but this creeper-related issue still persists ten years later, indicating it wasn't actually a duplicate of that. I'd recommend that MC-1602 be re-resolved as a duplicate of this ticket for accuracy's sake (or alternatively, this ticket to be resolved as a duplicate of it, it to be reopened and me to be assigned its new owner, although this option is more laborious).
Confirmed in 1.4.6.
Affects 1.6.4.
Still happens in 1.7.4, definitely happens most with Zombies.
Is this still a concern in the latest Minecraft version 14w04b? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
Confirmed in 14w11b.
Confirmed in 1.8.

Not sure if still present in 1.9-pre1. I just killed 512 zombies in 1 hit, every single one played the death sound. Is it that rare, or has it been fixed?
don't kill them in a single hit, kill them with a hit, just after you hit, almost instantly afterwards
Ok, tested again, but this time killing them with two hits in quick succession, and it is still present in 1.9-pre1. It occured twice in 167 attempts.
I actually had this happen a few days ago in 1.10.2, it may be easier to reproduce in mulitplayer.
Note: we were dealing critical hits every 1/2 second (2 players).
I've not been able to reproduce for far in 1.11. I was using a diamond sword with strength 2 on a skeleton.
Reproduced with a simple command setup, updated the description.
Confirmed for 1.13.1.
Can the command method be updated for 19w14b? It doesnt seem to work anymore.
Also, having no luck reproducing this with lava.
I just tried it with a few different mobs:
The two commands translated into 1.13 are:
(except without that backslash, Mojira is acting stupid)
{{kill @e[type=skeleton,nbt=
{HurtTime:1s}]}}
And I can also reliably reproduce it with that.
Confirmed for 19w14b.
I guess you can imagine what command I meant in the previous comment, it just gets worse every time I edit it.
Confirmed for 19w38b with pigs in lava. Can I request ownership?

Gave report to [~Awesoman3000], original reporter has no activity since 2015
Still in 1.15 Pre-release 3.
This bug is a old dinosaur honestly, i don't see it getting fixed anytime soon.
Cannot reproduce in 20w45a - assuming fixed
Still cannot reproduce in 21w03a with lava - can anyone else?
Resolving as 'Cannot Reproduce' for now. A fix version can be added afterwards in case someone finds out the exact version where this got fixed.
I may have been able to reproduce this in 1.19.2 with a more complicated setup, but further testing is needed to confirm this.
