You can see the compass / clock by crafting it or by looking in the statistics screen
What I expected to happen was:
Probably an empty compass, or one that spins randomly (like in the nether or end)
What actually happened was:
You can abuse being able to see the compass by gathering the materials and seeing the compass in the crafting table, or by crafting it in a creative world, going in to the survival world and going into the statistics menu, and clicking "items"
Steps to reproduce:
1. Gather the materials to make a compass (4 iron, 1 redstone)
2. Craft the compass, but don't actually put it in your inventory
OR
1. Craft the compass in a creative world
2. Go in your survival world
3. Go to Pause menu > Statistics > Items
Environment
Windows 7 (and 8, tested on my laptop)
Java 7u10 and 7u11

This is a duplicate of MC-8550. Fortunately, the recent fix of MC-116293 means that players can no longer use compasses/clocks without having the materials for them, but according to Marcono1234's comment here, it would be extremely difficult to also prevent players from viewing clocks/compasses in the crafting table output slot (without actually crafting them).
Thank you for your report!

This issue was also reported a couple weeks ago as MC-183409. In my opinion, both MC-183409 and this report are duplicates of MC-8550 because MC-8550 was about both the statistics screen and the crafting table output slot. The statistics screen was fixed and the crafting table output slot was resolved as won't fix. However, since MC-8550 is old and Mojang has recently fixed similar bugs, this report should probably be left open for Mojang to decide whether this is fixable or not.
When using an item model that changes based off the context_entity_type property checking for a player, the result is very inconsistent between various GUIs and screens in the game that render or hold items. Below is a table documenting the different screens/GUIs, whether or not items within them consider the player as the context entity, whether or not this seems intended or correct, and any additional notes on the behavior.
| Screen/GUI | Considered as held by a player? |
Likely to be correct? | Additional notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toasts | No | Yes | |
| Advancements | No | Yes | |
| Statistics | No | Yes | Seems to be intended as the resolution to |
| World Creation | No | Yes | |
| Gamemode Switcher | Yes | No | Seems likely to be incorrect based on the other non-block UI screen behaviors. Not a tangible item. |
| Recipe Book Tabs | No | Yes | Seems to be intended as the resolution to |
| Creative Menu tabs | Yes | No | Inconsistent with the recipe book tabs. Seems to be unintended, as MC-182892 is confirmed but unresolved. |
| Recipe Book recipes | Sometimes | Mixed results |
|
| Crafting Table/Crafter input slots | Yes | Uncertain1 | |
| Crafting Table/Crafter output slots | No | Yes | Seems to be intended as the resolution to |
| Missing ingredient recipe displays | No | Yes | Not a tangible item, seems likely to be correct. |
| All Anvil slots | Yes | Uncertain1 | |
| All Brewing Stand slots | Yes | Uncertain2 | |
| Beacon payment slot | Yes | Uncertain1 | |
| Beacon payment example items | Yes | No | Not a tangible item. |
| All Furnace, Blast Furnace, and Smoker slots | Yes | Uncertain2 | |
| All Loom slots | Yes | Uncertain1 | |
| All Smithing Table slots | Yes | Uncertain1 | |
| All Cartography Table slots | Yes | Uncertain1 | |
| All Grindstone slots | Yes | Uncertain1 | |
| Stonecutter | Yes | Mixed Results | The selectable recipes are not tangible items, but the input and output slots should follow note 1. Currently all three considered the player as the context entity type. |
| Items in container blocks, such as Chests, Barrels, and Shulker boxes | Yes | Uncertain2 | |
| Items in the equipment/storage slots of Horses, Mules, Donkeys, and Llamas | Yes | Uncertain2 | |
| Items in the Bundle tooltip/preview | Yes | Uncertain, likely yes | |
| Villager/Wandering Trader trades list | No | Yes | Seems to be intended as the resolution to |
| Villager/Wandering Trader input/output slots | Yes | No | Seems to be unintended, MC-186849 is unresolved but confirmed, and relates to |
1 - Entirely depends on if items placed in GUI slots still considering the player as their context entity is intended behavior.
2 - Depends on if storage/container slots are intended to be treated differently from slots in GUIs that don't hold items when closed, unlike the ones covered by note 1.
Attached are screenshots of the cases listed in the chart. The item model being an apple means that it is considered as player context, and the item model being a potato means that it is not. The resource pack used to test this is also attached - various random items were used to test the different cases, so refer to the files at assets/minecraft/items to see which are changed.
I always thought that's a nice gimmick.
It's not really comfortable to run around and always have to enter the statistics and to scroll to the right place, especially in multiplayer.
But this may be an issue in Adventure mode, if the player has previously crafted a compass.
Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
Still in 1.6.2
Clocks and compasses have specifically coded textures that always function when shown anywhere in game. This probably isn't a bug.
Confirmed for 1.7.5 and 14w11b. But agree with Austin.
Also if you're on creative mode the compass symbol for the search tab is an accurate compass, as are the clock and compass shown in the tools section. But I assume most of us don't mind creative mode players getting this since they could just create one out of thin air already. Kind of like how the item frame duplication glitch that requires creative mode probably will never be fixed because they don't mind creative players being able to duplicate stuff (people use it for enchanted stuff when they finally get just the right enchantments).
This is already fixed for the statistics screen. The reason why Grum marked is as Won't fix is probably because in the current state (based on deobfuscated code of 1.10) it would require some kind of hack to fix this because there is no distinction between crafting grid slots and inventory slots when they are drawn.
