Some entities do not render inside of spawners and producing error log spam in console, potentially causing lag
Mob Spawners do not render a "mini" mob visual for the following entities:
- Bee
- Enderman
- Polar Bear
- Wolf
- Zombified Piglin
- Evoker Fangs
See attached images for expected (Elder Guardian) vs unexpected (Zombified Piglin). When the game attempts to render them but fails, it also produces an error message in the console over and over again, which can potentially cause a lot of lag in the world, especially when lots of spawners are used.

What I expected to happen was...:
A "mini" version of the mob to be rendered in the middle of the spawner cube.
What actually happened was...:
No "mini" version of the mob is rendered inside the cage.
Steps to Reproduce:
- Place down a spawner
- Modify the spawner's block data to the desired mob (can be done through commands or by right-clicking on the cage with the desired mob spawn egg).
Note: The spawner does spawn the desired mob. The issue is only visual – you cannot tell what kind of spawner it is just by looking at it.

Duplicate of which is fixed in 1.17 snapshotsMC-189565
Duplicate of MC-189565, which is fixed in 1.17
Closely relates to MC-189565 and possibly MC-199429
The bug
If a spawner is created which is set to spawn players,
Skipping Entity with id minecraft:player
will be continuously spammed to the game log while the spawner is in simulation distance.
How to reproduce
/setblock ~ ~ ~ minecraft:spawner{SpawnData:{entity:{id:"minecraft:player"}}}- Look at the game log
Expected results
The game log would not be continuously spammed with the same message.
Actual results
It is.
How to fix
Since player entities are a special case which shouldn't be treated like other entities in cases like this, it may be worth rejecting such a spawner entirely, converting it to a default spawner instead.
Compare the following spawn egg:
/give @s bat_spawn_egg{EntityTag:{id:"minecraft:playerror"}}
As the entity ID is invalid, it spawns a bat instead. Having invalid spawners converted to default spawners would make this more consistent and also avert this issue.
Relates to MC-779, MC-189565, MC-199429, MC-195599, MC-196141, MC-249451 and MC-249686. May also relate to MC-3867, MC-87183 or MC-111339.
The bug
If a spawner is placed which spawns a "2D" projectile entity which rotates to face the player, the shrunken entity model found inside of the spawner will also rotate depending on the player's facing direction, but in a weird way. This is especially easy to see in Spectator.
How to reproduce
- Place a spawner via the following command:
/setblock ~ ~ ~ minecraft:spawner{SpawnData:{entity:{id:"minecraft:snowball"}}} - Enter Spectator mode
- Enter the spawner
Expected results
Either the snowball would be unaffected by the player's facing direction and would merely be tilted just like all other entities in spawners, or it would always face the player directly and be unaffected by the spawner's tilt.
Actual results
It appears to be affected by both simultaneously, causing it to rotate weirdly depending on the player's camera angle.
How to fix
A cheap fix would be for either snowballs in spawners to ignore the player's camera direction or ignore the spawner's tilting of entitites.
A preferable solution, however, may be to give projectiles custom models distinct from item models (similar to arrows, but preferably make them customizable models like blocks and items have). This way, there would be no need for the projectiles to be forced to face the player (averting MC-57861's possible resurgence) as the model would be 3D.

Confirmed, also the log is spammed with this:

As renderers are client sided executing this method's code causes a ClassCastException (ClientLevel cannot be cast to ServerLevel).
A simple server side check should fix the bug.
can confirm for 20w30a
Evoker Fangs & Experience Orbs are also affected
@Algeseven – could you possibly clarify in which class the server-side check needs to be implemented? I've been patiently waiting for a fix for this but it seems like we're not getting one until 1.17 which is unacceptable in my opinion. I'm trying to create a patch to fix this myself as some features on my server depend on some of these spawners, and I'm having trouble determining where this check should go. Thanks in advance.
@Mike - A modder named Draylar made a mod on fabric to patch this bug. Using mixins, he added a check to make sure the world is not a client world before angerFromTag method gets called (yarn mapping names)
You can either use his mod or check his code to create a fix for your server. As for Mojang devs reading this, this is all that is needed to fix the bug and so far, I have not seen any side-effects of this patch as I use it with my own mods as well.
https://github.com/Draylar/angerable-patch
I have fixed this but the fix does not include Evoker Fangs or Experience Orbs, which have a different cause and do not cause log spam. Please raise a separate issue for them.
I have created a report for Evoker Fangs. See MC-199429 Experiance Orbs are not affected but just really small. See: MC-196141
Issue still happens in 1.16.4 pre 1
This should be fixed for 1.16.4, not 1.17. It is critical.
This bug still affects release 1.16.4 (vanilla client and server) using the following custom spawner:
/setblock ~ ~-1 ~ minecraft:spawner\{SpawnData:{id:iron_golem},SpawnCount:3,SpawnRange:4,RequiredPlayerRange:25,Delay:20,MinSpawnDelay:9600,MaxSpawnDelay:9600,MaxNearbyEntities:25} replaceSpamming the client logs with thousands of warnings about:
As a consequence, user logs can grow very large.
Still affects 1.16.5
