Chat UI is forcibly cleared when killed
Chat UI is cleared upon being killed.
When one dies, the chat window is forcibly overwritten by the Game Over screen, deleting any message that was being typed. This is extremely frustrating when, for example, trying to report a hacker in PVP since you lose the name.
This did not happen in the past (versions prior to 1.8), but started happening in 1.9. (Note: this issue has 1.6.2 in its effects version, but on those versions it only happened on spigot servers, not vanilla servers; it happens on vanilla now).
Additionally, this can happen in single-player, not just multiplayer. Of course, in single player it's generally less important since you won't usually be typing in chat, but it still happens (you can test the issue with a command block /kill-ing you).
Steps to Reproduce:
- Switch into survival mode.
- Teleport yourself up high in the air.
/tp @s ~ ~150 ~
- Quickly begin typing something in chat and watch the chat UI closely as you die.
Observed Behavior:
Chat UI is cleared upon being killed.
Expected Behavior:
Chat UI would not be cleared upon being killed.
Created Issue:
Text in chat is cleared when dead
When you die, the chat window closes.
It removes the message you are typing.
If you are on a pvp server trying to report a hacker, this becomes a huge pain.
Also, if you are lagging, and you die serverside, any chat you send will be ignored.
What I expected to happen: I could continue typing after I died, and finish the current message.
What happened instead: The chat window was rudely closed and overridden by the "YOU DIED" window.
To reproduce:
Go onto a multiplayer server.
Ask someone to kill you.
Put a message into chat mid-process.
In the past that wasn't the case, which is my justification of this as a bug.
The greatest solution to this would be to also let you open the chat window while dead, but that could feasibly cause several problems.

This is the absolute opposite what's being reported in
MC-1663(No death screen while chatting). Please force a crash by pressing F3 + C for 10 seconds while ingame and attach the crash report here.
Weird.
I cant reproduce at the moment, so I will need to continue testing.
For that behavior (
MC-1663), it should be kept. It's very usefull.
I'll need to look at my setup to figure out the problem.
This what my friend @The Papa made, his report is

Just created an account to report this very issue. I want to clarify that it's not just the chat UI that's cleared, ANY UI is replaced with the death screen, meaning even when reporting a player from the pause menu instead of the chat, all progress is lost. I was just hit with a griefer while the server owner is asleep, and it took several tries to report them because they kept killing me, each time forcing me to start over. You also can't pause or chat while dead: you have to respawn, leaving you vulnerable to the next attack, and rush through the UI while the griefer just spawn-kills you repeatedly.
I want to see this issue raised from normal priority to urgent or whatever the highest is. This is unacceptable.
