Chest glitch that lets them appear as if they are opened while they are not.
This happens from time to time when playing SMP with a friend on my local minecraft server.
The chest seems to remain on the open state (regarding the animation) and closes once I rightclick it to view its inventory, so basically it's inverted. The issue doesn't seem to resolve itself after relogging, so it must be a server-side issue.
It usually happens after playing for a while, after frequently using a chest. Have been able to reproduce this for a few times, so I'll provide a screenshot whenever it happens again.

Can you please comment and verify you are running 1.4.3? Otherwise this duplicates MC-515 and has been marked as fixed in 1.4.3.
OK fair enough. Was just quoting the resolution of the ticket by Mojang.
If that is the case, the mods might want to reopen MC-515.
Confirmed new in 1.4.3 - never seen it before.
However, unlike the MC-515 description, this DOES fix itself by logging out and in.
Duplicate MC-515 pls search first before opening new tickets. Also vote and comment on 515 so its reopened as it was 'supposedly' fixed.

Dear sir, may I tell you that MC-515 is about Minecraft 1.4.2 and this one is about 1.4.3pre?
I don't care if I may, I already told you anyway.
Newly placed double chests automatically play the close sound after a few seconds in the chest inventory. When exiting the GUI it leaves the double chest open. Exiting and reentering the game fixes the issue.
It is a duplicate of MC-1638, but please don't mark it as duplicate. I created it because MC-1638 has been incorrectly marked as a duplicate of MC-515 (1.4.2). This is a new problem that appeared with 1.4.3, it needs immediate attention.

Ofcourse its in singleplayer too. Singleplayer is just a Local Server with only you joining.
So this is a duplicate of SMP chest open bug...
See here: MC-515

The opened lid of chest shows z-fighting with item frames placed on the wall behind.
Only viewable when either bug MC-515 kicks in or in SMP for other players
Duplicate of MC-515, which has been marked as fixed for Minecraft 1.4.4. Please search for issues before reporting them.
For future reports, please make your title more descriptive, 'Chest Bug' doesn't really give any information other than that it's something related to chests. Something like 'Chests stay open after interface has been closed' would suffice.

Seen this since I started playing SMP on 1.2.5
Weird, I only noticed this since I started an own little 1.4 private server for me and my brother. Before that I played on a bukkit server, didn't have that issue at any time.
I've also seen chests glitching in this manner ever since animating chests were introduced. I can't reproduce it on demand, but when it does happen the chest stays open and will not close no matter what. Seems to happen more often when multiple players are accessing the chest at the same time.
That might be it, back then I was the only one using my chests anyway, and now it's me and my brother both sharing the same chests, it has happened 2 times so far.
Had it last night, it might be something to do with moving in range of the chest while someone else has it open. The open state of the chest perhaps isn't sent to your client when you get close, so when the other person closes it, a change open/closed gets sent to client which is now inverted.
Possible relation to
MC-378I agree with jon. Having this glitch too.
I've had this bug since animated chests were introduced I think.
For me, this happens when I manage to right-click on the chest twice before the chest GUI is displayed (which is usually only possible when the connection to the server is slow).
Screenshots of the issue.
Discovered that this happens a lot more often when somebody is already looking in the chest, and then you look in it as well. Every time I did this it remained open and broken.
Very old bug, since Minecraft 1.1 or so
This has been here since the beta 1.8 chest changes
Funny then that nobody thought of fixing it.
One thing I noticed when it happened in the above screen shots I double-right-clicked instead of single. I think there may be a disconnect between the animation and the server sending the client the chest info.
Essentially I double clicked, the chest opened, closed (two animation triggers), then displayed the chest contents (one trigger). At which point the chest was now open when not browsing it, and closed while browsing it.
This bug has been in the game since they added the animation in Beta 1.8
I'm still seeing this in 1.4.3. Although as I'm untidy by nature, I kinda like the ability to leave the odd chest open. Makes a place look lived-in and used. I can generate the problem reasonably reliably by quickly switching between opening and closing several different chests (all at or above eye level in my setup, in case that has a bearing on the issue). Mac OS 10.5.8.
Still seeing this in 1.4.3.
Reports still comming in from 1.4.3-pre this still exists reopen pls.
Could the title be updated to remove the "(SMP)" as it is not limited to multiplayer or to survival?
Done
This happens to me often, usually only on Tekkit :S
Please update Affects Version to 1.4.2 and 1.4.3 prerelease, so when searching for 1.4.3 bugs it will be noticed.
Done as well.
After leaving a chest open, entering it again and it closes.
/But/ if you're quick enough you can leave it partially closed!
New screen shot attached.
Lol. It's getting better and better :]
Only happens to double chests for me. if you stay in its inventory for too long the closing sound plays, but when you exit it's inventory the lid stays open. only started happening in the 1.4.3 pre release for me. single chests don't do it.
This wasn't happening to me until I installed 1.4.3(prerelease).
Weird, I remember seeing this in beta, but it was fixed. To see it happening again is weird.
This bug isn't fixed. It's still present in 1.4.5 (Windows 7 / 64bit), but it happens more infrequently.
Still not fixed, didn't know this was that bad :o
I saw this before in 1.3 SSP on my old computer, haven't seen it on my new one (running 1.4.6).
I've seen it in 1.4.6, but usually re-opening the chest fixes it again.
I have seen this once in 1.4.6, but it is extremely rare.
Can confirm rare issues in 1.4.6
Reopenig the chest always fixes it.
MC-6278provides a good way of reproducing this.Updated again... Fixed the issue when it gets stuck in open state if the GUI is closed server-side.
This isn't fixed.
It's been happening on my server since I created it (1.5.1).
I noticed that it begins with the chest not opening when I right-click it, then it opens when I exit the GUI. It is inverted until I open and close it a few more times and it goes back to normal. When the inversion is occurring, the chest sounds don't play. The sounds play when the chest returns to normal.
It still happens sometimes yes, but it's way better than it used to be.
In the background I was downloading about 300gb of video from the security system across the local network. While I was not experiencing any lag or other unusual activity no chests closed the first-time during. Single-player 1.8.2-pre7.
Apparently this is still an issue as there are 2 duplicates reporting the bug for newer versions.
I personally haven't experienced it
See
MC-111993andMC-5124Yes, it's back again. I haven't played MC for some time but i did a few days ago and noticed that a chest was open when it really wasn't.
It is not fixed:
Chest is now inverted.
If you think it's still an issue, please file a new bug report.
