Lower absorption effect with different particle settings / visibility replenishes all hearts of higher amplifier effect
The bug
Lost absorption hearts of an absorption effect with high amplifier are regained when absoprtion with a lower amplifier (which should not affect the existing effect at all) and different particle settings (NBT tags Ambient or ShowParticles) or visibility (NBT tag ShowIcon) is applied.
Expected would be that either:
- the effect with the lower amplifier does not affect the higher amplifier effect (while also considering
MC-128682) - or (better?) that the absorption effect is removed once all absorption hearts are gone
Note: In 1.12.2 and older versions this also affected lower absorption effects with the same particle settings / visibility, see this comment. E.g. when eating a normal golden apple after absorption hearts from an enchanted golden apple had been used up.
How to reproduce
- Give yourself absoprtion with a high amplifier
/effect give @s minecraft:absorption 1000 10 true - Take damage and lose the absorption hearts
/effect give @s minecraft:instant_damage 1 3 true - Give yourself absoprtion with a low amplifier and a different particle visibility
/effect give @s minecraft:absorption 1 0 false
All absoprtion hearts of the high amplifier effect were replenished

The bug
If you eat an enchanted golden apple, use up all of your golden absorption hearts, and then try to get more gold hearts by eating a regular golden apple, the gold hearts from the regular golden apple will not be applied until after the duration of the absorption effect from the enchanted golden apple has run out. While the timer for the enchanted golden apple's absorption effect is ticking down, the timer for the regular golden apple's absorption effect is also ticking down, even though you do not currently have the gold hearts from the regular golden apple. This means that there is a severe delay between eating the regular golden apple and receiving the gold hearts, and that when you do finally receive the gold hearts, the duration is almost over.
To reproduce
- Eat an enchanted golden apple.
- Take damage to use up all of your gold hearts.
- Eat a regular golden apple.
- Observe that you don't have any gold hearts, even though you just ate a regular golden apple.

- Open your inventory and watch the timer for Absorption IV (from the enchanted golden apple) tick down.
- When it reaches 0:00, it is replaced by Absorption I, and you finally get the 2 gold hearts from the regular golden apple, but the duration of the Absorption I is almost over.

History
I tested this bug in 1.12.2, 1.13, 1.15.1, 1.15.2, and 1.16.3.
- In 1.12.2 (and presumably older versions), if you ate a regular golden apple after using up all of the gold hearts from an enchanted golden apple, it would (incorrectly) restore all 8 of the gold hearts from the enchanted golden apple. (This was the old version of
MC-88694.) - In versions 1.13 to 1.15.1, if you ate a regular golden apple after using up all of the gold hearts from an enchanted golden apple, the absorption from the regular golden apple was never applied at all. (This was the original version of this bug report.)
- In versions 1.15.2 to the present version, if you eat a regular golden apple after using up all of the gold hearts from an enchanted golden apple, the absorption from the regular golden apple is severely delayed and shortened. (This is the current version of this bug report.)
Extra information
I tested this bug in 1.12.2, 1.13.2, 1.16.1, and 20w30a. The current title (“Absorption replenishes hearts even if effect isn’t actually applied due to lower amplifier”) is accurate for 1.12.2, but it is not accurate for later versions. In the later versions, this effect can not be reproduced using merely an enchanted golden apple and a regular golden apple; commands are required.
Status effects (at least in later versions) contain tags called “Ambient”, “ShowIcon”, and “ShowParticles”. Ambient is used by beacons to make the particles less conspicuous. ShowIcon determines whether or not the icon for the status effects appears in the upper right corner of the screen. ShowParticles determines whether or not the player emits particles from the status effect. The current effects that a player has, including the values of these tags for each effect, can be seen by running
/data get entity @p ActiveEffects
The effect command can not directly specify the values of the Ambient, ShowIcon, and ShowParticles tags for the effect it gives, but it can indirectly specify them via the hideParticles parameter (at the end of the command). Specifying true for the hideParticles parameter cause the ShowIcon and ShowParticles tags to be set to false in the resulting effect. The default values of Ambient, ShowIcon, and ShowParticles (that are used by a golden apple) are false, true, & true, respectively.
In the versions after 1.12.2, the gold hearts of the higher amplifier absorption will only be replenished if at least one of Ambient, ShowIcon, or ShowParticles has a different value between the higher amplifier absorption and the lower amplifier absorption. For example, if you change the commands in the current reproduction steps of this report to have “false” for the hideParticles parameter instead of “true”, then you will not be able to reproduce this bug because the Ambient, ShowIcon, and ShowParticles tags of the absorption given by the command will match the Ambient, ShowIcon, and ShowParticles tags of the absorption given by the golden apple.
Even though the effect command can’t directly specify the values of Ambient, ShowIcon, and ShowParticles, they can be directly specified using custom potions. This allowed me to test each of the 3 tags individually to ensure that this bug can be reproduced using any of the 3 tags. I’ll upload a test world that contains command blocks that give custom potions, in case anyone wants to test this bug for themself.
TL;DR In versions after 1.12.2, this bug can’t occur in a normal survival world. Also, Marcono1234, the behavior I described above is the reason that you were able to reproduce both MC-88694 and MC-128682 in 20w18a.
Could I please have ownership of this report? In 1.16.3 the behavior is somewhat different than the report currently displays, and I would like to update the description.
Also, the "blocks" link to MC-88694 should be changed to "relates to".
Relates to MC-88694. This also used to work on java, but it cannot be reproduced anymore when using a regular golden apple.
MC-88694 is the correct report.

The bug
Applying multiple levels (amplifiers) of absorption influences the current number of gold hearts differently depending on the hideParticles parameter of the effect command. If you alternate the hideParticles parameter, gold hearts are accumulated. If you keep the hideParticles parameter the same, the number of gold hearts stays the same.
To reproduce
- Give yourself absoprtion with a high amplifier:
/effect give @s minecraft:absorption 1000 14 true
- Take damage to lose most, but not all, of the gold hearts:
/damage @s 52
- Give yourself absorption with a low amplifier and the same value of the hideParticles parameter as the high amplifier effect:
/effect give @s minecraft:absorption 2000 0 true
Note: Due to MC-169964, you will see red text that claims the command failed, but the low amplifier effect was indeed applied. Optionally, if you want to check that the low amplifier effect was applied, you can run the following command and see that there is a "HiddenEffect" in the NBT:
23w31a/data get entity @s ActiveEffects[{Id:22}]23w32a+/data get entity @s active_effects[{id:"minecraft:absorption"}] - Observe that the number of gold hearts stayed the same.
- Run the command again, but this time alternate the hideParticles parameter:
/effect give @s minecraft:absorption 2000 0 false
- Observe that you gained 2 gold hearts.
- Repeatedly run the command, alternating the hideParticles parameter between true and false each time you run it:
/effect give @s minecraft:absorption 2000 0 true
/effect give @s minecraft:absorption 2000 0 false
- Observe that you continue to accumulate gold hearts until you obtain the number of gold hearts that you initially had from the high amplifier effect. After obtaining this number of gold hearts, continuing to run the command with the alternating hideParticles parameter does not further increase the number of gold hearts.
Observed behavior
Unintuitively, the choice of the hideParticles parameter determines whether the number of gold hearts increases or stays the same.
Expected behavior
Running two commands that are identical except for the hideParticles parameter should have identical results except for the presence of particles and the effect icon on the screen. The hideParticles parameter shouldn't determine unrelated things.
Extra Information
You can also encounter this bug by using custom potions that directly specify the Ambient, ShowParticles, or ShowIcon NBT tags instead of by using the effect command with the hideParticles parameter. If you would like to test that, there is a test world uploaded as an attachment to MC-88694 that conveniently contains command blocks that give you custom potions. (However, that world was created before the mob effect changes in 23w32a, so the commands in the command blocks use the old format. This test world is only useful in versions 23w31a or earlier.)
This report is intended to be a successor of MC-88694 because the behavior of that bug changed significantly in 23w31a.

The following is based on a decompiled version of Minecraft 1.10 using MCP 9.30.
This happens because the method net.minecraft.entity.EntityLivingBase.addPotionEffect(PotionEffect) calls the method net.minecraft.entity.EntityLivingBase.onChangedPotionEffect(PotionEffect, boolean) always with true as second argument, which determines if the attribtues should be re-applied. This should probably be only true if the amplifier of the new applied potion effect is the same or higher than the existing one. The method net.minecraft.potion.PotionEffect.combine(PotionEffect) could be probably changed to return that.
Note: This would mean that a normal golden apple would not add any absoprtion hearts, which might be hard to fix.

Since I believe 1.18 that is no longer the case and using enchanted golden apples and normal apples works again. This means the particle effect does not matter anymore. I would give a code analysis as to why it works now, although I don't have the time, so instead, I will link to a working fix that has an explanation as to how the fix works. FIX
The short reason is just, they run onRemoved & onApplied using the wrong effect strength, and can be easily fixed by just moving around the calls.
I would like to add that this works for all effects in the game, not just absorption. Absorption was the only one noticed due to the golden apples.
Modded Status Effects, new status effects, and absorption are all affected by this bug. Any status effect that does something special in onRemoved or onApplied
An interesting thing to point out:
Marcono1234 said Note: This would mean that a normal golden apple would not add any absoprtion hearts, which might be hard to fix.
This is actually how it works currently, seems his fix was implemented.
Can confirm in 1.19.
Can confirm in 1.19.2.
Can confirm in 1.19.3.
This bug has now been replaced by another bug for golden apples+enchanted golden apples by the 1.15.2 feature of higher tier potion effects still letting lower tier potion effects come back when the higher tier ones run out.
So the bug is now that lower absorption levels are completely ignored if a higher absorption effect is still going (for example, when eating an enchanted golden apple, losing the extra 8 hearts, and then eating a regular golden apple, the regular golden apple's 2 heart absorption doesn't happen at all).
Please rewrite the bug report to focus on the new bug behavior, can confirm in 1.19.4 and 23w14a. EDIT:
MC-128682focuses on this behavior, so this report is now invalid and was fixed by 1.15.2 at least for golden apples. The behavior seems to have changed in 23w31a, now that
MC-202432is fixed you need to take damage until you have less hearts than the absorption amplifier provides, and after you take the third step the golden hearts are stacked based on the new amplifier, instead of automatically replenishing all the hearts. I.e you do step 1, remain with 1 heart and do step 3 you'd have a total of 3 hearts (you can repeat step 3 to replenish all the hearts).Since this behavior changed in 23w13a, this will now be tracked at a new ticket:
MC-264657.
