Unable to see others' chat messages / signs and written books don't work

The bug
Since 28 April 2022, my friends and I are unable to see each other's chat messages on my realm.
We tried a couple things, like changing the world, reuploading the world, restoring the world to an older back up. But nothing worked. For now we created a team, and are using /teammsg to chat with each otter. Also, /msg still works, though /say and /me are not working.
We found it out when we were just playing, I joined the game, and said hello, but didn't get any response. But they also said hello, but it didn't come to each other's chat.
Similar reports indicate that this issue may also affect the visibility of sign text to other players.

I wanted to report it for realms, but if I am right there is no delete button, or way to change it to realms.

Same issue, started a week ago. Also on 1.20.1. It's a single player game so I have no idea if chat doesn't work, but all signs have gone blank.

Other players can not read text on sign I have included side by side what my character on ipad and other players see(left) vs what I see on PC.(right) I asked other players to post signs but they come up blank when posting signs for me but not for them

No thats not it, if also checkt that. And al 3 of us have that problem on the realm wiht not seeing each others messages

Can confirm. On my 1.18.2 realm I am encountering the same two issues:
1. chat messages from other players don't show (yes, I checked, they are not blocked in the communications screen)
2. signs are empty
More Info on 1):
Using /say will display the chat to everyone, using /me will not. Using /tell or /w will work, so will /tm and /teammsg.
For 2) I have some more information on how it looks on my end:
I'm happy to provide any additional details on either one if I can.
I am not having the chat messages problem, but the realm that I am on is suffering from the sign problem, to the exact degree in which that Plagiatus describes it, and some of our books are also having their text hidden when 'filtered_pages' and 'filtered_titles' objects show up (for seemingly no reason) in the books' nbt data. The books, like the signs, are able to be restored with the /data command, specifically by using '/data remove'. I will provide any information I can if asked.
Encountering this issue. Written signs have gone blank, and new signs which get placed appear with text for a split second and then immediately go blank. Basically means the Realm is unusable as we can't communicate effectively & can't tell what our chests contain. I've been perfectly happy with Realms for 5/6 years, but this is really disappointing.
Since today I have the sign problem to, and with books of quil. Yesterday the books and signs were just normal, I dont know why I only have that problem since today, and not yesterday. Its really anoying, because for monday I write something in a book, so that my friend could read it when were doing something on monday.
I maybe have some usefull information, so I did my realm world to singleplayer to test something. I wrote a sign, and reuploaded the world to the realm. The text from the sign is still there. But if I place in the realm new signs, the text just stays disapearing.
Have not had anyone else on the server yet to confirm any issues with chat messages.
But almost all of the signs in the realm are blank. In my storage area, all but the oldest 10 signs have lost their text. Attempts to replace the signs leads to blank signs also.
Having the exact same problems. Text on old signs has fully disappeared, placing a new sign with text will show the text for just a second before it disappears. Chat messages can be sent and are visible to the person sending them, but not to anyone else. /w and /msg are the only things that work to communicate

In the Realm I play on, many existing signs have gone blank (although some managed to retain their text). Any new signs placed down lose their text immediately. No public chat messages appear at all (although /whisper works).
Is there an over-zealous profanity filter on Realms that is censoring every single word?

Another option is that the "Multiplayer Secure Chat Signing" introduced in this week's snapshot 22w17a causes some issues. As the bug seems to have appeared around the same time.
Then again, the existence of the "FilteredText" NBT attributes (and similar) hints in a different direction.
I commented this on a previous bug, that got moved to here. just wanted to add it in here to possibly help:
I have witnessed this as well. 2 community Realms I'm part of, no chat is working at all between players, no logged in or logged out messages either. I did notice when another player completed an achievement, that DID come through in chat. but nothing else. also tried whispering ( /msg ) does not function either. all signs that have been placed prior to April 28th, have their text intact. all signs placed from April 28th till currently, are blank. we have verified that client side mods are not at fault, by loading through the official launcher and normal vanilla 1.18.2.
I am having this issue as well. I am not sure if it started on my realm or not but it is not limited to it. I also cannot see player chat on servers. A few more things are happening, the whole bug linked below.
MC-251096It might have been caused by some data-packs I have on my realm. I have Vanilla Tweaks items as well as a vein miner data-pack listed below.

Also started in my realm on 4/28/22. So far, I have been able to use /w as well as /say, but /me did not work. (And friends and I are too new at this to know how they can message me back.) All new signs have letters disappear immediately, but as far as the small number of signs WITH text, some are newer, but some have been in place for at least a couple of months, since we started the realm. Can't find any pattern as to which ones retained their text vs not. Also noted that so far, looks like the same signs are blank (or in a few cases, with intact text) for all players, regardless of who placed the sign or when it was first placed.
In addition to the blank sign problem, I would like to add that my books and quills keep erasing themselves. The content is still in older ones, but all the ones I typed in during the last two or three weeks are now blank. It retains the correct number of pages, but all of those pages are blank.
I was having the same problem and it is really annoying. Accidentally posted a bug report on the same issue. Didn't see this one when searching.
As of 2022-04-30, public chat, signs, and books are working again for me on Realms with the Java 1.18.2 client.
Currently, this bug is showing as open and unassigned, but clearly someone's working on something server-side, and their work is appreciated 😄
I've found that my signs have been blanked, but when I create a new sign since seeing this issue, that is showing ok. It just seems that Realms has deleted all of the existing signs.
it seems that today my realm is just fine again and doesn't show any of these issues anymore, after it experienced this issue for the past few days.
Just to clarify: signs placed between March 23rd and April 29th might have invalid values of fields 'FilteredText1'-'FilteredText4', same for books 'filtered_title' and 'filtered_pages'.
It should not be a problem for now, but that might change in the future, so to avoid future issues you might want to re-touch those signs and books.
I'm pleased to say that my sign text has re-appeared today.
Still happening on my realm. I stripped texture packs to nothing, downloaded world into normal and it works but once uploaded into realms there is a problem.
With signs the writing appears for a moment then disappears.
Messages dont appear at all
Name tags dont work. Once you put the name in and then go to grab the tag, the tag re-appears in the first box again and is not named.
Things have been this way for ages. It really is frustrating.
I play on PC and am using Bedrock
@kurbs75 wrong bug report. This one is about Java. The bedrock report is
REALMS-9191I’m having this exact issue on bedrock edition realms. Others on the realm can see their messages and communicate, but I, the OPERATOR, can NOT communicate with anyone. I am the only one on the realm whose messages are not showing up to others.
We as a family are currently experiencing this issue. Specifically our two players on bedrock that use the Nintendo Switch version are unable to:
Chat to other players
Write messages on Signs
Name anything on name tags. (Here, whatever is typed ends up as "#####" however long the length of the word/words was.)
Verified that the microsoft settings allow chat to/from everyone.
Our users that use PCs are able to do all of the above successfully. Thanks!
@Mods at this point can we get a modnote like in
REALMS-9191telling people that this one is NOT about Bedrock?We are currently experiencing this issue with some friends on our realms.
Affects general chat and /say, /msg, /tell, /w, /me commands, signs, book & quill and name tags.
It is almost the exact same problems already described on previous comments, but seems to have resurfaced now on Java 1.19.
This issue is happening again - When I wrote on multiple signs in my realm the text did not show up. Not sure if this is a realms glitch or not. I reported this back in May and it was marked resolved, but it is back - perhaps due to an issue with the new 1.19.1 update. This problem happened in a Creative mode realm AND a Survivor mode Realm. Terribly frustrating.
Update: We just logged in to the Realm with a friend and we can now use Name tags on mobs again and Book & Quills no longer go blank. But we still can't see each others messages and Signs do go blank after writing on them.
The realms is still on 1.19 Java
Also on 1.19 Java Realms, and the problem seems to be exclusive to me. Other players can write signs as normal and I can see their chat messages, but they cannot see my chat messages and any signs I make appear blank after writing on them...
Hi, same for me, when I write on a new sign and validate, the text disappears. The problem is exclusive to me too in the realm.
I am on the 1.19.1 version.
Having the same text disappearing issues on our Java realm as well. The problem started happening probably a week into playing, it started with the text on signs disappearing. Then when renaming an item in an anvil the text would always turn into hashtags. I also had writing in a book and quail for a while and it stayed there until I checked it recently and only the second page of writing was gone, I flipped through the rest of the pages and they were fine but when I went back through the book again all the pages disappeared but the last one. Also another problem is that my friends can't see my chats sometimes, I haven't checked name tags yet. I play on PC, while my friends are on Xbox and PlayStation, so I don't know if that matters. This is also fairly a new world so there aren't a lot of signs down or anything like that.
I'm having the same issue on my realms server. Both signs and chat doesn't work for me and the other members on my realm.
Edit: Doesn't work in both modded and non modded minecraft.
Update: As of today, the issue randomly resolved itself. I have no idea what happened, but this issue is still rather obnoxious to be happening to random players only on Realms. Keeping my vote on this bug.
A while back this issue was resolved for me. Did not know it was still ongoing as I haven't experienced it for a while. As well as, my realm is permanently closed due to chat reporting.
Having the same chat issue on a 1.19.4 realm that was just started a week ago. Random messages like "standby" say Hidden For Some Players.
This issue just started today on my realm i've had for months now. When joining today, only a few hours after playing fine before, I got the message that messages were not verified. My other friend was unaffected as he already had 'only show secure chat' set to off already
this is on 1.20.1
Apparently this is still happening in 1.21.1. After about a month of no chat issues at all in my Java realm, even with the profanity filter still on (didn't realize there was an option), random messages would not show up starting a few days ago. It would say "This message has been hidden for some players" or would ### out a specific word, even if it was a totally normal word. The censoring got worse over the past few days until tonight every single chat was blocked with that "hidden" message. This only persisted for about 20 minutes until they randomly started working again. Certain words are still banned though, even with the profanity filter turned off. I also had a book & quill page randomly erase itself multiple times early on in the realm but that appears to have fixed itself too because someone else wrote in it and the writing is still there. I guess a lot of people are having similar issues and not all of them have worked out well, so I'm hoping that my issues either stay resolved or someone is able to come up with a solution to this.
