Shields don't block TNT damage
The bug
TNT explosions cannot be blocked using a shield. When blocking while TNT explodes, the shield does not take any durability and does not protect the player from any damage. Creeper explosions, however, can be completely blocked using a shield.
Steps to reproduce
- Get a shield, TNT, and flint and steel
- Set gamemode to survival
- Place the TNT on front of you
- Activate it
- Block with the shield
→
You will still take explosion damage

I place a TNT, ignite it, stand close while facing it, while blocking with my shield. I take damage, and the shield has no decreased durability.

This is because the *TntEntity* will uses the igniter as the causingEntity of the Explosion. It'll be using as the Explosion's DamageSource then. So when a Player tries to block the Explosion by shield, the game will uses the igniter of the TNT instead of the TNT itself as the DamageSource to judge whether the Explosion can be blocked by shield or not. Since you ignited the TNT by yourself, the only way to block it is to face towards yourself, and that is impossible. This is the principle of the bug. Hope Mojang could see this and fix it soon
Here is an example to repeat the bug [^bandicam 2022-08-09 22-12-40-170.mp4]
Could you explain why a shield should block a ghast fireball, but not it's explosion, damaging the shield for no reason? Why the heck would that be intended? There is no logical reasoning to prove a negative.
But considering that shields are supposed to block damage by definition, it's inconsistent with creeper explosions and small fireballs, and relates to MC-188247 and MC-159169, one of which has a mojang priority, I'd say it's a bug.

Explain the error further, and do not write stupid things like "Java edition because Bedrock is stupid"

I included plenty of info
Can confirm. It seems like the shield doesn't block any TNT damage at all. It blocks creeper explosions though, even completely.
Is this behavior new for 1.14 or has it existed before?
I just tested this in 1.13.2 and TNT explosions aren't blockable there either, while creeper explosions are completely blockable.
This behavior occurred in 1.14.
Affects 1.15.2 and 1.16 pre3
I sincerely hope that it will still be marked WAI, because the shields and so OP, so still they will block TNT explosions
