This is similar to the issues described here: MCD-1224
This has been going on in the Switch version since the game was released. You're lucky to have only experienced it since the update!

It appears that the performance issues seem to be largely caused by playing while the console is docked.

Local coop on the switch is often unplayable. The frames drop to well below 30. Sometimes the drops are so brutal that my eyes start to hurt. You should not publish and sell an unfinished game! When is this going to get patched? Should I get a refund?
I'm seeing bad performance in both handheld and docked modes. It often slows down to an unplayable state and is more noticeable with the map open.
yeah for some ungodly reason the fps is capped at 30 on switch
if 60fps isn't possible than maybe 45fps is a better cap than 30fps
I'm not even getting a steady 30 fps docked playing coop.
It stutters and frameskips quite badly
Same here, performance is really bad. If I hadn't bought it online, I'd return it.
Same here, frame rate inconsistent and apparently below 30fps, not only on local COOP but also during single player in docked mode.
On Nintendo Switch, the performance is sometimes ok, but it most often is not. Some levels are worse than others. Soggy Swamp, for instance, was a complete stutter fest from start to finish. Creeper Woods starts out ok, but after accessing Creepy Crypt, then both Creepy Crypt and Creeper Woods get a lot of stuttering, presumably because it then has two maps loaded at the same time and can't handle it. The issue is even worse with 2 players in local co-op, but it also happens while playing single player.
What seems to happen is that the game starts off playing mostly smooth. Then, partway through a level, it will start to get some stuttering, where it feels like the frame rate is quickly jumping back and forth between 30 and something much lower than 30. Then, after a little more time, the stuttering really sets in and doesn't ease up. Once a level really gets going with the stuttering, it will stay that way until finishing the level and warping back to camp, at which point it smooths out again. It doesn't seem to matter how many mobs are on the screen at a time. It can have crazy bad stuttering with a screen full of mobs or a completely empty screen with no mobs nearby.
Optimizing the game to actually be able to sustain 30 fps (or ideally to get 60 fps) would be the preferred fix, but as a stop-gap, maybe implementing an option to play at a lower resolution in order to maintain a good frame rate could work. With the art style of the game, it doesn't seem like it would suffer too much by dropping down the resolution a notch, and if it could help the frame rate stay consistent, it would be a welcome trade-off.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WMgNwXbZPlr4DvVZ5_v-ACmLltXPbGjs/view?usp=sharing - low fps on local coop
I am also having the same issue here. The most important issue is that the game does not even run at a stable 30 FPS. There are FPS lag spikes in certain areas of the game compared to others. Fighting mobs causes even more FPS lag, contributing to choppy and unsatisfactory game-play. Agreeable with one of the comments above that it is straining on the eyes to play with such choppy FPS. This FPS lag on a console is unacceptable, as there is no possible way for the user to improve their FPS performance such as upgrading a GPU or CPU. I hope there is a future patch that optimizes the game properly and maybe even bump up the FPS cap. If the game is too visually intensive for the switch (which would be odd for a voxel game) at least give the players an option to optimize their own graphics settings so that they can achieve a playable FPS. However, I would say that the FPS lag is contributed to poor optimization. Please fix this Mojang! The game is really fun during the absence of FPS lag, but really frustrating to deal with when it is present.
I was playing more over the weekend, and I found that the performance issues where the frame rate significantly drops and the game stutters and hitches actually seem totally random. Sometimes I'd be alone on the screen with no badguys around, and the game would be stuttering like crazy. Other times I'd be in one of the areas where the camera automatically zooms out a bit and have a bunch of mobs on the screen, but the performance would be fine and smooth with presumably a solid 30 FPS. So it doesn't seem to be the number of mobs, nor the level of zoom that affect whether the performance will be good or bad. It's a total mystery.
For me the unstable FPS are happening in handheld and in docked mode. I also noticed that the FPS is much worse in the swamp, and is also affected with more than 1 local player.
@marcos_rpj, I experience the exact same. I have even upgraded from a U1 microsd card to a U3 to see if there was an I/O bottleneck occurring, but this appears to be affecting the game as it's already in memory; not loading new assets from storage. There was no change from upgrading I/O speed.
Still poor fps after updated to version 1.3
Have only played MCD with local players on TV mode starting shortly after release and including completing all jungle DLC maps. Power level 109. Have never had a smooth frame rate.
+1 Still poor fps after updated to version 1.3
Hey everybody,
After the update, I am happy to say that the game is in a much better state and is playable with steady FPS! Lag still occurs when there are many mobs to kill, but this is expected and I do not really expect this to get fixed as this could be due to the switch not being a strong enough device to handle the game. However, random FPS drops pretty much no longer occurs for me...at the moment. Will update this post if I encounter any further lag. Unfortunately I see that this patch has not fixed the FPS issue for other players which is unfortunate. ):
Just played this morning, docked 2 players, latest version, and FPS is terrible though all of Soggy Swamp and also goes down on some of the other levels.
Performance on Switch is still bad. Some notable times that the FPS takes a huge dive are when lava or mist is on the screen. But still, in general, there are regular FPS drops, and some maps are still sluggish the whole way through (Soggy Swamp and most inside caves/dungeons). I actually notice it more now when it smooths out all the way and it gets the intended 30 FPS. It feels unnaturally smooth and jarring now, because most of the time it's so jumpy and stuttery and crappy.
Any update on this from Mojang? Are you working on this issue? I think most players are perfectly fine with slightly less fancy graphics, if it means we can play on 30 FPS all the time.
I can confirm the performance is still bad with the latest version of the game.
I'm playing the game on switch, docked/TV mode, 4 players offline.
Experiencing nauseating lag, specifically from the camera. Players/mobs move fine and input seems fine but the camera clips frequently enough to cause motion sickness.
This occurs at a very specific time for us: the game runs great, even with lots of mobs UNLESS I enter/exit a separate area during a quest. If we enter a side area during a quest the camera will remain choppy for the rest of the quest. If we leave the quest and come back the lag stops.
We are seeing performance issues as well playing with local co-op in docked/TV mode. Very difficult to play with these low frame rates. We would really like to enjoy this game if you can address the performance.
We just played this past weekend in dock/TV mode. Local co-op (2 players) and the FPS/stuttering was fairly constant. It gave us both a headache so had to stop playing - such a shame because it's a great game that my partner loves (and he's not a gamer!)
Lag/stuttering would happen at various spots, not just with mobs. For example if we were just moving and trying to get to the other side of the map, it seemed like the system was trying to keep up with the rendering and would stutter/lag.
It's almost been a couple of months, how can I get a refund or a code to play the game that I bought on another platform (e.g. PC) which doesn't have these issues?
In reality this game should not have been released on Switch due to the known performance issues. A delayed release for this platform should have been scheduled such as The Witcher 3 (which I might add is a much more demanding title that runs fine).
Please @Mojang - It would be nice to have an update on if there's a fix in the works, or if this isn't going to be worked on so I know if I should continue progress on my switch with my family. At this point I don't want to continue for fear that we should just start over and buy the game on the Xbox/PC platform, which I don't know that my family would want to do anyways, but at least it I would love to know where it stands so I could make a decision.
Just asking for a status update.
The frame rate is unbearable. I got the physical copy 2 days ago and I just sold the game on ebay today. I don't get why there are so many heavy lags/frame drops. If you will ever fix this, I'm going to buy it again.
@Tobias I wish I had bought the physical copy so I could do the same.
I wish hadn't bought it as it was for the kids because they love Minecraft but they just get frustrated and cry that it doesn't work. If you have social media post about it on there to help raise awareness and make this a priority.
UPDATE: At the time of this writing, this is the 6th highest voted Open ticket, and one of only 2 in the top 6 that has not been commented on or noted by a moderator, despite the age of the ticket and the severity of the issue.
The framerate/stuttering is still an issue after the Creeping Winter update. It is still the case that randomly the framerate will drop and the game will become unbearable to play for anywhere between a couple seconds to all the until the level is over. It's still the case that nearly every time a cave/dungeon is entered inside a level, the framerate drops significantly and it is unbearable to play until exiting the cave/dungeon.
I don't understand how this is acceptable to the developer/publisher. Why has there not been a patch that improves performance on the Switch? Even the option to lower the resolution or other graphics settings in order to maintain a steady 30 FPS would be better than nothing. It seems unreasonable to assume that these frequent and lengthy FPS drops have gone unnoticed by the developer/publisher or the masses. I haven't seen any acknowledgement of the FPS issues on Switch, nor any indication that it's being looked into/worked on.
This needs to be fixed, Mojang
Adding to the list of people experiencing poor performance.
While the performance is not great in general, it could be understood it's due to the console limitations.
That said, one specific stutter situation which is not explained is when entering a sub area (cave, house, etc) during a mission ("travel" invite). When entering an area like this, the game starts to heavy stutter whenever the view is scrolling. It does not stutter as much on fixed camera. And once coming back to the original area, the stutter remanes, and performance is largely below what was just before.
This is obviously not due to the console raw power, but a bug somewhere else. Maybe it's memory management on new area, maybe it's the camera handling which goes weirdly (so far I noticed it happen in coop, haven't check solo). It's hard to say.
The opening videos stutter in TV mode, not in handheld mode.
Soggy swamp is the worst offender for low frame rate.
Multiple players in local coop seems to contribute to skipping.
Experienced freezes of about 5 seconds in dessert temple on separate days.
Checked with 1x game cartridge on 1x switch lite and 2x switch (improved battery edition).
Indeed after playing for a moment in the pumpkin area which had decent performance, I can confirm I had a much worse situation in the previous areas, especially the swamp.
This seems to affect handheld mode also.
Affects 1.6.0.0
I bought this recently on Switch. We started the game, 3 player local coop, docked. The stuttering is unbearable for longer than 30mins' session. Then we just have to turn the game off. I noticed the stuttering always starts after we leave a dungeon (any) and come back to the main area (whichever). Sometimes it start straight when we enter from the camp.
The stuttering is so bad, my kids notice and complain that it's not playable, which unfortunately is true.
Any plan to resolve this? The game looks nice enough, I believe there are some graphical settings that the devs can turn down a bit, achieve better FPS, less stuttering and still have a beautiful game.
But first it needs to be playable.
Is there a status, when this can be patched? I genuinely regret buying the game and hyping my kids about it.
Mojang - it would be nice to know if this ever will be fixed, or not fixed, or if it's ever at least going to be investigated. Else if not then just close it now so we all know.
This is a safety issue.
One of my son's friends suffers seizures and the flashing effect of a slow frame rate during lots of action onscreen is something that he said he shouldn't use.
The game has lots of bright visuals which have a strobing effect exacerbated by this bug - especially when 4 players have bright weapon effects concurrently.
Yes, there are no doubt warnings somewhere in a EULA, but this bug is a consistent way of increasing the risk to players.
Mojang, this issue has been around for a long time, please fix it. Everyone, if you haven't already, please vote for the issue so that this is fixed. Thanks.
Agreed, please just a straight answer either way. I don't even play it anymore. I got it for me and the kids but none of us can stand the stuttering. It would be wonderful knowing this bug is squashed so we can all play again.
The game has problems with slowness and freezing in several parts in TV mode, even as a single player. These FPS problems make it impossible for the game to have a good experience and make it give up playing. The game seems to be very good, but unfortunately unplayable. I expect a correction soon, because if this continues we will be forced to ask for a return.
The stuttering and hard framerate drops occur constantly, with no apparent trigger. Outdoors, indoors, exploring, in combat, enemies everywhere, no enemies at all, new area, area I just came from. It doesn't matter the situation. I could be at home, with just a shop NPC and a sheep, and the game still stutters, like that one scene, with 3 characters just standing around, is too much.
This game isn't in early access or open beta. It hasn't even recently launched, the second set of paid content, including a season pass, is being released. It shouldn't still be running like this.
Mojang,
for the love of gaming, please fix this FPS issue on the switch. There is no excuse as to why it should stutter so much, so often. I just got the game but to hear that this has been going on for a while is bothersome. This should be fixed in the next patch no questions asked.
Just got the game for Christmas.... Playing with my kids. IT'S A NIGHTMARE. It's lagging so bad (playing docked mode). I scrolled the comment to realize it's unfixed since May 2020... Any Mojang staff looking at this and working on it or what??
So my son bought MC Dungeon from his christmas money and the game stutters like crazy, dont release badly optimized software!!!!!!!
This is an obvious money grab and i am upset, you even sell DLC for it!!! Microsoft/Mojang should be ashamed to release a game in this state.
Please fix that. I am able to play in portable but with a son we want to play in docked mode. 2 players in coop. In that setup there is massive drop of peformance.
He biught game for his own savings and now he is upset because of this.
Dont do such things to kids guys...
Fix it... or
at least give us option to reduce/turn off
Spells effects,
dynamic lightning of decoration items,
reduce resolution to 720p,
turn off stuff like fog
Old levels need rework, reduce visuals there.
Can confirm performance issues are severe on the Nintendo Switch. Not only does it seem like the console runs warmer than other demanding games (BotW, etc.), but the random nature of freezes and crashes makes the game almost unplayable. Myself and my partner continue to battle through the issues on separate Switches (the issues seem more prevalent online in multiplayer) by putting the console to sleep and then attempting to resume but even this fix is a hit or miss. It's a shame as it would be truly wonderful if we could speed through the grind without having to also endure the loading screen grind thanks to crashes.
Seeing that this has been the case for almost a year is a little concerning, especially given we've not only purchased the base game, but the season passes too.
It seems like after 1.8.0.0 the Lag issues in the camp just got worse. Possibly what's causing this is that everything in a level is being rendered at the same time. Mojang please fix this. Me and the whole MCD switch community wants this fixed.
After the Flames of the Nether DLC came out, the game in general seems even more laggy/stuttery/jittery. Previously the camp was pretty smooth, but now the camp is in bad shape. I've played 5 out of the 6 new levels, and they are very laggy/stuttery/jittery most of the time. It makes it even harder to tell what's going on in the new levels, because of their color palettes. For example, with a red background, red terrain, and red badguys, the stuttering makes it very difficult to keep track of what's happening. On older levels it didn't feel as bad, because the colors of different things were very distinct, so it was easier to tell what was going on even with the bad stuttering.
It still amazes me that after all these months, and with all these votes, watchers, and comments, this issue has still not been looked at or commented on by anyone official. My assumption is that since we keep buying the DLC anyway, they're fine with leaving the Switch version in this terrible state. It's not possible that they're unaware of these stuttering issues.
How is this still an issue. Can we not get a response please?
+1 for this being an issue on the Nintendo Switch. The game is laggy to the point of being unplayable at times when multiple people are playing on the docked console while there are upwards of a dozen enemies on-screen. I'd love to see a "performance" mode that reduces particles, lighting, and other effects just to have a better playable experience. Maybe adjust the 'zoom out' distance, too. The reason I suggest that is because the game functions okay in solo-play while docked. But when players start getting away from each other, causing more area to render on screen as the camera pans back, and putting more enemies and actions in view... that's when things go downhill quick. Hope the team can add some ways to scale back what's happening and improve this game because the Nintendo Switch should be the perfect console for this four-player cooperative experience.
How is this still in backlog? This is a severe issue that causes the game to be unplayable and should be resolved in a hotfix. Seriously the game has 5-15 FPS docked/undocked with notable freezes during the daily trails.
If only JIRA had a like button...
I'm seeing the switch version of this game for £10 on the local facebook marketplace - people are selling it at quite a loss less than a year old. No other switch games drop that fast, but then I don't know of any other switch games that grind to such low framerates.
It doesn't have a "like" button, but you can both Vote and Watch the issue. Those sort of act as "Likes".
I agree. Mine has crashes in Gale Sanctum every time so I can't finish the level. 5 times in the past two weeks at different points after restarting and power cycling. I reported the issue and one of the techs closed it as a duplicate for another issue that was listed as resolved and then closed that issue when I commented on it and a bot reopened it. Hopefully it's resolved soon because my son and I love playing on the switch as I'm sure a lot of kids are doing as well.
It’s unplayable in the current state. Just started local coop game with my son but i think i am going to return the Switch version and buy the PS version.
Was looking forward to playing it on the switch but this is undoable and nauseating.
Please Mojang, fix or no fix? Then i know if i have to return it or not.
Any news ?
A mod just came on to look at and delete a picture about mojang not caring and didn't leave an update.
I think that's a clear message about how likely a resolution is.... and a case-study in irony.
Maybe a class-action lawsuit by a consumer watchdog would helps us get the product we paid for, after all it isn't fit for purpose so there is probably grounds for compensation in there somewhere.
i actually don't think this is mojang's fault. i think it's that the game engine trying to use more power than in can in tv mode. in handheld mode it will run decently, but in docked mode, it's trying to run at the power of the xbox or playstation. I dont know much though, this is just my idea
This is 100% their fault and responsibility. They choose the game engine and the platforms the want to target. They shouldn't have released it for the Switch because there is no way they wouldn't know about these issues.
At this point targeting their bottom line and highlighting the bad business practices like what happened to CD Projekt Red might be the only way to get some movement on this.
They use the same (Unreal 4) engine as Fornite. Not only does that run smoothly on Switch, but Epic further enhanced graphic quality and performance through code and config optimisation after release.
It is absolutely within Mojang’s gift to optimise code and tweak configuration to mitigate the elements which cause the frame rate drops.
You’ve bought it, they have your money. Next time you have to choose between Mojang or Epic etc. Just look at the support track record. Mojang today reminds me of EA a few years back.
We understand you are frustrated by this issue, however please remember that this is a bug tracker and not a discussion forum. If you wish to discuss a particular bug then you should do so on our reddit or discord server.

@GreyMagic27 - while this may not be a discussion forum, this feels like the only official way to try to talk to mods/mojang since this issue doesn't get any traction in the other forums.
An update on if/when/or if this issue is not planned on ever being fixed would go a long way towards some good will with the community.
I would even be happier if this "bug" was just closed so I could stop checking on it in hopes of playing some day. Of course I would rather to be able to play it instead.
Also - deleting comments never builds good will with the community. I can't speak for him, but I'm guessing Tom Thorpe will be much less likely to buy another mojang game in the future.
This issue might "only" have 64 votes, but is guaranteed to be affecting all switch players. That's the beauty of consoles right? Everyone's hardware and software are the same
Has never been fixed.
I have always played docked, always offline, always with my game and the OS up to date, and quite often with local multiplayer. FPS is RELIABLY under 30 FPS if there any any enemies or effects on screen. Sometimes 2-5 FPS if the enemy and effect count is high. Would be acceptable if the game didn’t still freeze and delete ancient hunt offerings. I excitedly try playing with every update, but it’s always crap.
I've made a feedback-post on the Minecraft Feedback site.
Perhaps give it a vote, maybe the devs will do something if it gains traction?
https://feedback.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/community/posts/360078054751-Improve-performance-on-Nintendo-Switch-
The problem appears to still be present in the most recent update (downloaded yesterday). It is specifically noticeable at the end of the redstone mines, near the end-boss with all the animated lava textures.
I have a 2nd generation Switch, and no additional DLC.
Shame Bart's feedback post mysteriously no longer exists.
I have had my Switch go lower than 10fps. However that's just during the opening logos, but I have seen the frame rate drop fast when lots of enemies are on-screen.
This occurs however during the additional DLC that's included with the game.
I still have massive lag with latest update in docked mode.
I bought ultimate edition today, stutter on title screens and level loading including the music stuttering and during levels the framerate jumps all over the place and isn't just about mobs spawning, even walking back through areas I've cleared out the framerate splutters. I also could not link my xbox account because if I try the screen says waiting, the cube rotates and nothing at all happens and the only way out of that screen is to shut the game down.
even when handheld its super laggy, its mostly cutscenes though
We've made performance improvements when playing in docked mode. I'd love to hear if anyone has thought on their experience after playing version 1.16.1.0. Thanks!
