I've reproduced this error in a newly-updated version: force 1.5 update, then manual .jar replacement with the snapshot. I used a newly created world. Mac OSx 10.6.8, running the MultiMC app.
Confirming: I placed a block of snow, then built up the snow on one side of it to one level below, and the glitch happened. Placed the nearly-full block then the block, and got the glitch. Placed the nearly-full block then the block made from 8 built-up layers, and no glitch. Hope this helps!
I can only reproduce this the other way round:
(See the fence post connecting to the full snow block)
Affects 14w08a
Can confirm with smooth lighting turned on.
Still in 14w17a

This could actually be considered a duplicate of
MC-139621, as I'm pretty sure snow layers are meant to have shadows casted on them by all blocks, including higher snow layers.Affects 1.16.1

Can confirm in 20w51a.
22w12a makes the extra darkness also be casted from 8 layers onto 7 layers, so that inconsistency is gone. However, the fact that 8 snow layers cast a shadow onto 7 layers is still present, which is itself an inconsistency since 7 doesn't darken 6 and so on.
I think this ticket should be resolved as Fixed, as the second issue is already covered by
MC-64678(8 casting onto 7), as well asMC-139621(1-7 not casting onto the block below it).
