Zombie pigmen will spread their anger forever if they can continously respawn
The bug
When I log into a world and go into the nether and hit a pigman, they all come and attack me. but then, when I die and go back into the nether, the attacking pigmen keep attacking me along with newly-generated ones. This is a huge problem because in survival I cannot go into the nether without being ambushed by pigmen.
Explanation
On video 2019-06-01 19-35-06.mp4
, We are tracking the pigmen Anger data value. Value is initially 0 until you attack a pigman, then the value is set at 800 and decrease at tick speed. The issue happens because the anger value for each pigman is continuously built up by other pigmen spreading their anger, which leads to eventually never reach 0. This issue only persists if the pigmen continue to naturally spawn and despawn, as with normal survival gameplay. The old ones seem to spread this value to the new ones until they despawn and so on, making this a entire way to maintain this process forever.

I beg to differ. They are not resetting their hospitality flag. By the portal, I pillar up 5 blocks and wait 2 minutes. New pigmen seem to be spawning all the time. I'll run away to the opposite end of a near by Nether Fortress (this point must be about 200-300 blocks away).
New pigmen spawn hostile and kill me. I return to the neeather and they are still hostile at the portal.
These should be the same pigman that I ran away from after 2 minutes so they SHOULD not be hostile anymore.
- Edit: I should make it clear that I am not attacking back.

A connected player was complaining that the Pigmen were attacking him even after they had go rid of all the aggressive Pigmen. They left the nether to go work on other projects. Upon returning to the nether, they were greeted with several aggressive Pigmen. I told them to pillar up at least three blocks, and wait for me to assist. I got rid of all the Pigmen in a 50ish block radius. They spotted several more on some elevated terrain, so I switched to creative flew up there, switched back to survival and waited to see if they would attack me, the Pigmen did not. So I let the other player know it was safe to get down. They earned the Return To Sender achievement, but doing so caused the Pigmen to attack the player again. I died in an attempt to assist them fend off Pigmen, which is unfortunate, but the only solution for that player was to switch to creative mode, and switch back to survival (which I still do not fully understand why that worked).
With the other player disconnected, I went to the nether, attacked a zombie Pigmen, let myself fall into lava, and went back to the nether (to see if I could reproduce the issue). The Pigmen were still highly aggressive and attacked me on sight. I left the nether to finish filling out this report.
Upon further reading, [Mod] Urielsalis said "Zombie pigmen are meant to stay hostile for 20 to 39.95 seconds". So I went back to the nether, after spending several minutes writing this report, and checked to see if the Pigmen were still aggressive, they were, and upon pillaring up 3 blocks, and waiting well over a minute, they were still aggressive. Eventually a ghast spawned, shot me down and the Pigmen killed me.
A few things I am unsure about:
1) I am not sure why switching gamemodes seemed to fix the Pigmen aggression issue
2) I am not sure why Pigmen would turn aggressive when another mob was being attacked / attacking the player.
3) I am not sure why Pigmen would "remember" an aggressive stance when the person who attacked them either killed off everyone in the vicinity, or left the nether, or had the proper cooling off period.

Since "bug" MC-148600 has been fixed, gold farms like that one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9oteFEj770 does not work anymore, as the newly spawned pigmen aren't angry.
In my opinion, those farms aren't too OP considering the number of blocs and works it needs to be built. That said, I would rather suggest to reset the anger of pigmen when the player die.

This is a "Works as Intended".
Pigmen have an anger NBT data tag. You need to wait for them to despawn (don't go into the nether portal right away), or for their anger to go away. You can do this by building up a couple of blocks so they can't hit you.
Unless you can provide further info on why it's a bug...your description is just a regular feature of MC.
Zombie pigmen are meant to stay hostile for 20 to 39.95 seconds
i stood next to multiple zombie pigmen upwards of 2 hours on our 1.14 server and they would not lose aggression, it took over a week of messing around until we finally got them to forgive us
Confirmed, this is also happening on our server (1.14). I recently built a rail spanning 1100 blocks in the nether and encounter a few groups of Zombie Pigmen along the way. The areas I chose to kill the pigmen have not lost agro. When spending hours in the overworld (or other areas of the nether) and then returning to those areas the pigmen auto-agro without further engagement. This only happens for the areas I agro'd the pigmen. Other areas along the span of the 1100 blocks the pigmen are neutral. Other members of the server have confirmed this is all the case for them. If "Zombie pigmen are meant to stay hostile for 20 to 39.95 seconds" then that is not happening. I have even tried to kite them for minutes (without hitting them) to see if they will de-agro. They will not return to neutral.
Can confirm for 1.14. I have tried the method of escaping their aggro range and something weird happens. It seems to work for a couple seconds but the pigmen will aggro that are WAY out of the original range. I have also tried building up a few blocks and built a cage around me and sat for an hour. Didn't change anything.
Definitely seems like a bug and the "Zombie pigmen are meant to stay hostile for 20 to 39.95 seconds" is just not happening for me. This does not seem as a "Works as intended" either because it doesn't matter if they despawn. Newly spawned pigmen will aggro me no matter what.
It is nearly impossible to go ANYWHERE in the Nether.
Edit: Confirmed for 1.14.1. My more concrete test of this issue is I sprinted 500 blocks away from where the pigmen were tracking me. Obviously they stopped tracking after around I got around 40 blocks away. What should happen is that these new pigmen will stay neutral until hit. What instead happens is when I enter the area of these new pigmen, they are peaceful for up to a minute. Then seemingly-randomly they all get aggressive towards me. The "bug" seems to be that newly spawned pigmen that are out of the "aggro range" will randomly get aggressive towards you.
Can confirm for 1.14.1 pre 2 too, i ran away over 200 blocks at the top of the nether, stay for several minutes and back to the place where i was, the zombie pigmen still hostile (sorry, bad english)
This bug is annoying as all hell, sweeping edge is what usually makes the pigmen mad, which is 99% of the time unintentional. Kinda disappointed no one has been assigned to this issue.
The problem seems to be that zombie pigmen are spreading their anger even when they can't see you - in 1.13 and earlier, they only spread their hostility toward you when you were within their line of sight, but in 1.14 they keep on growling even when I'm behind a solid brick wall.
It's possible that a single, isolated zombie pigman will eventually forget about you, but if you had multiple ones that can see each other and are prevented from despawning (by having picked up items or by being nametagged), they will keep spreading aggro to each other and will never calm down.
Can confirm for 1.14.1-pre2.
I can confirm. This is happening on my 1.14 vanilla game, non server. The bug seems to be indefinite. In the past you could go into the over-world and the time would expire. I have been away from the nether for many hours. And have spent 10's of minutes in the nether. And all Pigmen stay angry.
This is also happening on my 1.14 vanilla game, non server. I tunneled in and blocked myself off for a good 20 minutes and when I came out, they were still waiting for me at the exit. I killed all of the ones that were there and left and every time I go back into the nether, there is a bunch of them waiting for me the second I go through the portal.
This seems to still be the case in 1.14.1 release.
Can confirm it is in 1.14.1 I am seeing some overlap with the bug where mobs are not despawning (apologies i could not find the bug reference) that is still present in 1.14.1. The pigmen are in the same position when i go back into the nether as where they were when i left. maybe the two are related?
This is also happening in my 1.14.1 world where they never get un-angry. Fix this or I have to lead them into a hole/lava pool every time. very annoying.
i'm so tired of this bug! i thought this was fixed in 1.14.1 but no
Constant aggro, you can build a platform, wall yourself in, sit there for over an hour and when you break a block to look out, they're still huddled at the base aggro'd on you.
This is still a thing in 1.14.2 pre-release 2
Definitely still an issue. I dug a tunnel under the lava lake (and blocked off the opening) thinking that they wouldn't be able to follow; I went over 100 blocks away and stayed there for a good ten minutes. When I carved out a side branch back toward land, the pigmen there were still giving aggro sounds, so I didn't surface. Went back and tunneled even further away from land. I was there for a good hour, and then finally crept back the entire way on crouch to my original entry point. Finally they were de-aggro'd. But as persistent as their aggro was, I was surprised that it finally went away. Definitely not working as intended, and definitely not the way it was in 1.13.2.
Windows here, I too am having this issue, ever since I hit a pigman they have perma agro'ed me. Rough time trying to explore/mine.
Java user, I also suffer from the perma zombie pigman aggro, except that I didn't even hit a zombie pigman to start their aggro, instead a Ghast that accidentally shot a zombie pigman started the aggro.
From Wiki:
Zombie pigmen will remain hostile for 20 to 39.95 seconds, and will continue to pursue an already-targeted player after this time until the player escapes their 40 block pursuit radius. Approaching within 35 blocks of an already hostile zombie pigman causes it to sound an alarm call, angering other zombie pigmen in a 40-block radius. The forgiveness timer does not advance for zombie pigmen in unloaded chunks. Thus, if the player enters a Nether Portal and returns, any provoked zombie pigmen in the area will still be aggressive unless another player was nearby to keep the chunks loaded. Dying will not cause zombie pigmen to become neutral towards the player, regardless of whether they killed you. They will pursue the player even if under the effects of invisibility.
Travis, yes, that is all correct. But the pigmen are remaining hostile for far longer than that, even when outside the 40 block pursuit range. Definitely different behavior than 1.13.2. And if you don't believe me, go hit one and see what happens.
I have now tested this 3 times and if you leave the 40 block radius and wait awhile. they deaggro. I have seen nothing but normal behavior. I tested by gaining agro then pillaring up about 45 blocks into the ceiling and waiting for about 5 minutes. They have lost aggro every time. Must make sure there is zero pigmen with 40 blocks which is hard to do considering the 35 block agro chain. You may be 40 blocks away from the group but not from the ones on the edges of the group which have their own agro radius.
Travis you are lucky it seems to be working for you. For many of us it is not. If you read some of the above many people have gone way out of their way very far. I know for my own situation. It doesn't matter where I go the pigman hate me. A new spawn hates me the same as an old spawn. Regardless of where I am in the nether. The Nether has become an impossibility at the moment. I have killed plenty in 1.13.2 and never had an difficulty. Something had changed for dozens of us. (At least those who have reported.)
Travis yep you are just lucky. I have been playing mc for years and its just recently i notice the pigman doesnt behave normally
1.14.1 i went above the bedrock towered up 50 block high waited 10 min no use, set game to peacefull for 5 min travelled away, set back to normal at a spot in the nether i've never been before and all new pigmen hated me..
confirmed for 1.14.2-pre3
Put in a peaceful mode, let the pigmen disappear and put the difficulty of your world back, they work while they fix this bug.
The only way I have been able to stop this is switch the game to peaceful and despawn all Pigmen then go back to the previous difficulty.
The problem remained in the new world, in the old world the problem is not solved (1.14.2-pre3)
This is still a problem in 1.14.2 pre-release 4
(To everyone saying that you can put the game in peaceful mode, yes. you can also kill all zombie pigmen entities. But if you have a farm, like a gold farm, you rely on named zombie pigmen, and if you go to peaceful, they will disappear)
I have experienced this problem on a skyblock world where I only have one platform which can spawn zombie pigmen. I can stand 2, 10, 100 blocks away for 5 minutes, 30 minutes, I left the game running for 3 hours standing over 100 blocks away in the nether and they never lost aggro or they would lose aggro and then as soon as I get anywhere within range the (I assume) newly spawned pigmen turn aggro again. This is not the way their aggro worked in any version previously and thus is not "working as intended."
So dealing with this on our server, I propose that the reason they seem to randomly aggro on players who never attacked them is because the aggro from one player is passing to any other player that enters the area. I cannot test this at this time, since I'm the only one online right now, but I thought I would share it with the community in case someone else has the time/desire to test it.
Death does not reset aggression, and neither does leaving the nether, staying away for any length of time or anything else that we have tried. The only solution I have found to this problem is
in areas affected by pigmen who have become aggressive.
Blazes took the behavior of Pigman... https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-47699
And as of 1.14.2 full release both aren't fixed.
Confirmed on 1.14.2. Tried switching between peaceful and hard, nothing. They stack you forever anywhere you go
Having exact same issue. 1.14.2 java edition on Mac. I've gone more than 800 blocks away from zombie pigmen in the nether, waited for more than 10 minutes then returned and they are still going agro. I have not attacked them back and they have now followed me through my portal and I'm stuck in my house surrounded by a huge hoard of them. Tried pillaring up through my roof for more than 100 blocks and waited another 10 minutes and it changed nothing. Gah!
Someone else mentioned a gold farm. Mine is over 128 blocks above the ceiling so that they can only spawn at the farm. I leave the farm and the new pigmen that spawn when I get in range of the closest spawn-able space down below the ceiling are aggro. I got off the server and someone got on sometime later and the aggro transferred to them. This is in 1.14.2 on a Vanilla Survival server.
Currently playing most recent version 1.14.2 and in a single player vanilla world. The Pigmen spawn too quickly and too much to do anything about them. Switching to peaceful to despawn them, then going back to normal difficulty doesnt make their anger go away. Even if I managed to fight back before they overwhelm me one spawns behind me and kills me from behind before I can even turn around. I made an account on this site just to PLEASE ASK THIS BE FIXED. I cant just keep peaceful on in the nether forever, it takes away both the challenge, and multiple mobs with important drops! At this point its so frusterating that if I could remove pigmen as a mob entierly I would...
Able to replicate 1.14.2
Please don't comment for confirming a version that is already marked as affected.
Is there a reason why it says unassigned? If this has been a problem since 1.14 came out mid April, have they seriously made no effort to get someone on fixing such a disruptive bug thats been known for almost 6 weeks when its borderline game breaking if your trying to play normal survival?
This 👆
These game breaking bugs are not acceptable, should have been fixed when 1.14.2 came out.
Agreed a full 3rd of the game is not accessible.
I'm personally fine with them pushing out updates as groups of big bugs are fixed. My guess is there aren't enough votes for this to even be on the radar yet. Get your friends and fellow server-owners to come vote on this one since it's kind of a big deal....and don't complain that X bug isn't fixed in the latest version. Minecraft is, and always has been, an under development game. It'll get fixed....just be patient.
Updated this ticket: pigmen don't stay aggro forever if their number is not renewable. But Actually their anger is mutually being spread out which lead them to never stop being angry when they are allowed to respawn.
1.14.2 What should I do? Impossible to play in portal, they always angry.
Just be patient that a third of the game required to reach the other third of the game is inaccessible if you do the very easy mistake of accidentally hitting a pigmen, when theres been 2 major bug updates since this became a problem? I literally made this account a few days ago just because of this bug, so I dont know too well how things work around here. But I dont even know server owners or anything, I usually play minecraft solo so I cant assist in adding votes. But this bug is so major they should have noticed it by now.
Several of us in this thread never even attacked a pigman. There is an older bug out there, if a pigman is hit by another creature its aggro will pass to the player. For me it was a skeleton shooting at me and hit a pigman instead.....
[~kevinrichardnelson@gmail.com]: see
MC-69032.Temporary fix! Sorta?
Okay so I was working on a work around until it gets properly fix. Just changing to peacful mode every time you enter is no fun and also gets rid of mobs with important drops, so I started looking into a way to just get rid of pigmen. I came up with this command:
/tp @e[type=minecraft:zombie_pigman] ~ ~-600 ~
It instantly teleports all zombie pigmen to the void, so no lag from their drops! So you can plug this into a infinitely repeating command block (dont forget to /gamerule commandBlockOutput false to hide chat spam) and there will be a bit of visual junk of pigmen constantly trying to spawn in the distance and instantly dissapearing, but no more angry pigmen constantly attacking you!
But the new problem this causes is that without pigmen taking up the majority of the mob spawn limit, you get SO MANY other mobs spawning. Especially ghasts. I cant say how it effect gameplay in a nether fortress atm but in the regular sections of the nether your swamped with ghasts, endermen, and magma cubes.
So if anyone wants to mess around and help me find a way to limit hostile mob spawning in the nether on a single player world, feel free to add on.
Please fix this! The Nether is a nightmare now for me and my players on our servers. The zombie pigmen never stop attacking and can see you through obstacles!
On a side note, I notice this behaviour of zombies and zombie pigmen seeing you through obstacles is a real pain. Why was this introduced?
Adding another voice - server owner here, the nether has become close to impossible to traverse, even for players with full diamond. A quick toggle from peaceful back to normal difficulty did not reset the pigmen, and they are angry throughout the entire nether.
This is still a problem in Minecraft 1.14.3 Pre-Release 1
Made an account just to comment on this. Definitely not working as intended. I angered a Zombie Pigman for a little extra EXP and gold, not expecting much, but it's been a few hours of regular gameplay and they still haven't forgiven me. I went a fair distance in the Overworld (to a Stronghold) and went back into the Nether (a few hundred Nether blocks away from the first pigman, near my base around 0,0), and they weren't aggressive at first, but after I tunneled back to my base and connected it with minecarts, the pigmen at the Stronghold portal became aggressive. Neither area's pigmen have ever calmed down since. I can hardly explore the Nether Fortress for more blaze rods, etc. without at least one pigman divebombing me from God knows where, and more often in groups to surround me. The Nether is supposed to be dangerous, but not THIS dangerous.
On the plus side, the eternal pigman anger has made for an excellent and easy source of gold. I can dig a pit, put some hoppers and slabs at the bottom with trapdoors at the top, and swing away at one corner and get tons of EXP and nuggets. I also have a fully auto gravity gold farm at my first base now, loaded up with a few double chest fulls of gold, again with very little effort on my end. Definitely a broken mechanic through and through. Hoping it gets fixed soon.
We have a couple of guys on our server affected by this, it's a major problem for them and it means they can't safely traverse the nether.
I saw this issue while looking through the wiki because I was experiencing the same bug, even with commands I can't set their anger timer to 0, it just resets, I decided to set the game to peaceful for a few minutes and see if that will fix it, this is a huge issue and definitely should not exist this far into the main branch of the game.
Something new to add. After being barred from the nether for weeks due to this bug I can now enter the nether and not be attacked. I did bring myself to creative a few times maybe that had something to do with it fixing itself. I ended up creating a Wither however I only had 2 skulls from the past when I could venture there. I got tired of waiting and just gave myself the 3rd. And I killed the wither. Also I ended up AFK fishing in my base overnight. The fishing spot is close to a portal. I have noticed that the spawns in the overworld never were mad at me. I went in the Nether today to get some gold from the hoards of pigman walked around a bunch and none of them attacked me. Something changed and I don't know what it was. I am on 14.2.
A simple solution:
Instead of resetting the Anger timer when spreading aggro to newly spawned pigmen, aggroed pigmen should instead copy their own Anger's value to the newly spawned pigmen.
So if there is one pigman left that will be aggro for 30 more ticks, newly spawned pigmen should also be aggro for 30 more ticks, not for the full 800 ticks.
Comment on Match Nerd:
OK, should work. However, this does not remedy the fact that the pigmen sense the player(s) through solid (even opaque) blocks, which might be the source of this problem?
YESSSS OFFICALLY CHANGED TO FIXED! Cant wait for the next bug patch update!
Can confirm that the aggro problem is fixed in 1.14.3 pre 2
Fixed, but seems to break current pigman farms. Maybe make them de-aggro if any of the following conditions are met if the player that they are aggro against:
1 - Dies to any of the pigmen (would require some AggroAgainst flag).
2 - Leaves the dimension (to which they should despawn...).
3 - Unloads the chunks (don't know if this would be laggy on chunk unloading code events.).
Or disable the timer on a nametaged pigman
Or roll it back to the 1.13 behavior. Seriously, it was working fine back then.

1.14.3 pre 2 they attack me after death
I am also still having this problem in 1.14.3 pre 2
Death doesn't reset the counter. In 1.13 they would continue to attack as well. I believe this is intentional.
If you're still experiencing this in 1.14.3-pre2, please create a new ticket.
Hi. I just played MC after a long time again and can confirm this is an issue. It's not "Resolved" as the bug status tells. My experience I had today: I hit a pigman and it of course triggered an endless onslaught of zombie pigmen which is normal. They funneled into some trap and I killed them all but they just kept spawning (which is OK). Then I ran away and they chased me all the way to the nether portal. When I went back to the nether, managed to fight them off until there was a 3 minute silence with pigmen spawning around me in the distance (longer than the 40 second cooldown). When I moved around, the newly spawned still attacked me. Maybe some were aggressive on higher structures because pigmen were falling to their deaths: these can pass their aggression onto others too.
Eventually after 30 minutes of fighting I had enough and switched to peaceful & creative mode and then back to hard and survival. Of course, they despawn and respawn, but even after this they attack me after some time! I flew back to the point where I hit the first pigman and along the way they were even agressive to me in creative.
I don't know much about game programming, but I think the anger data should be attributed to the player, not the chunks from which I can tell happens here. So when you run into a new chuck with anger you trigger mobs but when you fought off some mobs in a stationary position and this anger becomes zero and no mobs are triggered. Maybe also fix the issue of mobs behind walls triggering new mobs. But that's just me telling what genius level programmers should do lol. xD
Edit:
@Quietust Same issue here with the zombies not in the line of sight. I had pigmen fall to almost their deaths (20 blocks) from structures above mine in the nether. I can't kill these pigmen. So when I kill all pigmen near me, when I move around, these pigmen that are higher than I am might follow me around and spread their anger into new chunks.
@john blano The fix is for pre-release. It hasn't met full release yet as long as 1.14.3 has not been released.
@Johnibur Then I just have to wait I guess instead of finding a mod. ;D
Would be nice if there was some kind of cool down bar much like when you see during a raid. When this disappears it means you're free to wander
This issue occurred on a server I'm playing on.
An ALTERNATE WORKAROUND is to properly use a Potion of Invisibility (maybe more than one) and visit the nether with all armor and weapons removed (in fact I went in with just food and torches).
Make sure you don't bump against the mobs. Maybe hide in a corner or crybox until the potion runs out. Since the mobs can't see any players but are loaded the timer will actually expire.
The work-around I have found for this is to enter the nether in creative mode (if you're on a server, have an admin do it). I then reloaded the chunks and went back into survival. Unlike despawning (which doesn't seem to change the anger status) or entering peaceful mode (also just despawning the mobs), creative seems to force the anger to be reset (mobs present but non-aggressive). I have not had aggro issues since, nor have the other players on the server. Although this would obviously have to be repeated any time someone hits a zombie pigman, it seems to be a pretty solid repair for the specific instance of the issue when it happens.
@QueenDarkLady this has been resolved in the 1.14.3 release. Pigmen no longer work the way they did before 1.14, but at least they don't stay permanently angry/passing anger to every other pigman in range eternally.
My realms server in 1.14.4 has this issue of pigmen passing agro endlessly even after they kill you and if you are in the nether with a player that hits a pigman they will go after you if that player goes through a portal
This ticket has been resolved. If you still have issues, please create a new one.
