Donkeys/Mules have same hitbox as horses
Saying this is WAI or invalid is coward! At least say "We know this is not intended, but fixing it is too complicated. We will still keep that bug in mind and maybe fix it in the future"
The part of floating on top of a donkey (MC-48179) is actually caused by this bug here.
As donkeys and horses are treated the same way, they have both the same hitbox sizes and also the same riding player height, which makes of course not so much sense because donkeys are not as tall as horses. Also the hitbox bug can be seen when pressing F3+B . You will see that the eye level (red line) is too high.
Actually the hitbox bug isn't that bad at the moment (1.8.2-pre2), because horses also have an incorrect hixbox height

Remaining issues for hit boxes and eye positions will be split up into their own reports.
If such an issue is a problem for you and doesn't have an own report yet, feel free to create it!
Avoid grouping several similar issues as this report did.
For example if the hit box of zombies and the hit box of wolfs has an issue, that is two reports, one for zombies and one for wolfs.
This report has been split to make it easier to update the reports and hopefully also easier for the devs to fix them.
- MC-143184: Eye level and visible eye position mismatch
MC-142768: Suffocation caused by eye-level outside of collision box- Reports specific to certain entities or situations, e.g.
MC-117619, MC-119372, ...
This report is still about bad hitboxes.
The hitboxes and eye position of a few mobs/entities are in a wrong place.
All fine here.
Seems wrong, but with explanation and expectation to stay like this.
Unsure if issue or intended.
Minor issue.
Bigger difference
Special issue that may need to be moved into an own report
| Mob/Entity | Height | Width | Eye Position | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Horse, Donkey | Suffocating below blocks, see |

| Baby Horse | Suffocating below blocks, see |

| Giant | - | |||
| Small Armorstand | - | |||
| Baby Pigman, Baby Zombie/Drowned, Baby Villager | I assume all these have the same height intentionally. Their average rendering height is quite a bit higher than the current hitbox. Especially Pigman rendering goes higher quite a bit. | |||
| Pigman, Baby Pigman, Husk, Baby Husk | The eyes of pigman sit higher than the ones of the other mobs for rendering | |||
| Guardians, Elderguardians, Ghast | - | |||
| Bat | - | |||
| EnderCrystal | *or rather renders too far down compared to the hitbox | |||
| Pigman, Zombie, Villager, Witch, Skeleton | Seems a little bit too small, but making them higher would make them not fit in 2 high spaces, therefore probably intended. (Not confirmed by devs) | |||
| Cave spider | Seems too small, but making them higher would make them not fit in 1/2 high spaces, therefore probably intended. (Not confirmed by devs) | |||

| Too small when not sneaking, too high when sneaking (likely part wise caused by MC-48191 and therefore intended). Eye position does not change when sneaking | ||||
| The facing is inverted too all other mobs. Height and Width is the AABB around all parts so it looks too huge, while it actually is probably fine |

In the world download MoxBoxes_1_11.zip
most mobs are spawned in a row with NoAI. It can be really useful for testing.
I recommend using F3 + B and /gamemode spectator. Also it's good to turn particles to minimum to better see mobs like blazes.

Confirmed.
Issue is that Player is floating above the saddle
The game doesn't take the smaller height in hands of the donkey in account; the player is having the same Y height sitting on a donkey and on a horse.
Maybe caused by MC-76050
Relates to or caused by MC-76050
Mobs suffocate when their eye level is inside solid blocks.
Therefore in cases where the eye height of the mob lies outside of its collision box, the mob doesn't need to be inside a block to take damage from it.
This can lead to mobs weirdly taking damage or dying.
Affected Entities
| Mob/Entity | Eye Position | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Baby/Grown Chicken | Suffocating below blocks | |
| Baby Mooshroom/Cow | Suffocating below blocks | |
| Baby/Grown Horse/Donkey | Suffocating below blocks, also see MC-76050 for donkeys | |
| Baby/Grown Llama | Suffocating below blocks: comment | |
| Fox | Suffocating below blocks | |
| Baby Turtle | Suffocating below blocks but eye Position seems fine. See |
|
| Cod | Fixed by moving eye height down, see |
|
| Baby Sheep | Fixed by moving eye height down | |
| Baby Giant | Fixed by removing baby giant? |
Ideas to fix this
- Manually move the eye position for the hand full of affected mobs (seems what has been done and is reasonable)
- Adjust the suffocation rule to only trigger when eye height and collision box are inside blocks
- Force the collision box to grow to include the eye height
- Force the eye height to snap into the collision box
This issue was split off MC-50367.

Can confirm for MC 1.12.1.
Confirmed.
Confirmed for 1.13.2 and 19w13b
Can confirm in 20w51a.
Can confirm in 21w03a, however this no longer affects donkeys. Donkeys have a slightly smaller hitbox than horses & mules.
Yes in 21w03a (and probably earlier) the hitbox of donkeys is slightly smaller. However, the sitting position is fixed for all of them.
It might make sense to resolve this report because for all of them the hitbox is actually too low causing the eye level to be too low as well (see MC-143184), and moving the eye level outside the hitbox is not a good solution because (if I recall correctly) it is used to determine whether an entity suffocates (see also
MC-163673, unless that changes in future versions).Can confirm in 23w31a
I can confirm this in 24w19b and attached an image demonstrating the bug. MC-76050.png
Can confirm in 1.21.4.
