Hunger bar depletes too fast
The hunger bar drains way too quickly.
Updated description by Makzevu:
The following is a list of the current exhaustion points given when performing an activity. Every time an action is performed, it's added to a counter for the player performing it. Once this counter is greater than or equal to 4, the number is completely reset to zero, and one saturation point is taken from the player. However, if the player has no saturation, one hunger point is taken instead.
Jumping: 0.4 Breaking Blocks: 0.025 Sneaking: none Walking: none Sprinting: none Swimming: none Sprint Jumping: 1.6 Attacking: 0.3
As shown above, Bedrock's exhaustion system is very similar to Java's system before 1.11 (Java's Exploration Update released in November 2016; not Village and Pillage), however there are a few differences.
First of all, it is completely impossible to gain exhaustion by sprinting or swimming at all, thereby making it impossible to lose both saturation and hunger when performing only those actions.
Steps to Reproduce
- Create a flatland world with doDaylightCycle disabled and doWeatherCycle disabled in Survival Mode (cheats are required here)
- Sprint forward for any amount or time
Here, the player does not lose any hunger whatsoever. The same can be said for swimming in the proper circumstances (pretty much swimming in an ocean for any amount of time).
Second of all, jumping while sprinting is twice as painful as Java's pre-1.11 values, prompting 3 sprint-jumps per half of a hunger bar (I'd assume this is the focus of this ticket, given the name "Hunger bar depletes too fast", but I'll leave the previous information in for vanilla-parity).
Steps to Reproduce
- Recreate a world with the same attributes as the flatland from the earlier list
- Sprint and jump at the same time until 3 hunger bars remain
Here, when assuming the player starts with both 20 (max) hunger and 20 (max) saturation, the player is only allowed to sprint-jump 102 times from worldspawn. In Java's pre-1.11 on the other hand (taking into account that the player starts with 20 hunger and 5 saturation), it was 95 times. Today in Java's 1.15 (with the same hunger and saturation levels), it's 380 times.

This is really game breaking. I mean it seems like animals spawns more too, but the goal of the game is not to run for food 24/7... especially if you die when you run out of hunger when you run lol. Just "switched" from java and this is killing the game

With MCPE-56031 being updated in 1.18.20.30, MCPE-34333 is still noticeable. 34333 was flagged as invalid because the hunger/regen system was not setup. It seems inconsistent to fix 56031 without also fixing 34333.
Steps to reproduce: Open a creative test world, and give yourself a stack of golden carrots and 2 splash potions of poison II. Switch to survival. Douse yourself with both splash potions of poison until at half a heart and you have 1 1/2 shanks of hunger to consume, then consume the golden carrots. When available, consume a second as soon as you are able to. In Java 1.18.1 this will only take 27 seconds to regen to full health, while on 1.18.20.30 it will take well over 90 seconds, despite being able to run and jump with Java 1.18.1 hunger. As such if you are in combat with enemies in caves and have to run and jump away from them while under danger, your hunger dips very quickly because most of the "saturation" goes away due to repairing the damage over the long 90 second duration.
We are tracking this issue at MCPE-56031.
Thank you for your report!
However, this issue is Invalid.
You reported a parity issue. We are only tracking parity issues that meet the following criteria on this bug tracker:
- The feature affected by the parity issue is present in both Bedrock Edition and Java Edition in the latest release or development version
- The feature behaves differently in one edition than in the other
- The parity issue was introduced in Buzzy Bees (Bedrock Edition 1.14 / Java Edition 1.15) or later and was not present before
Any parity issue that does not meet these criteria will not be tracked on the bug tracker and should instead be reported on the Feedback website.
The changes to Bedrock’s hunger mechanics in 1.18.20.25 beta were fixes to the existing mechanics, not a parity change to implement the system that Java has. The present Java behavior was introduced in Java Edition 1.11 according to MCPE-56031.

📓 Project Summary – ✍️ Feedback and Suggestions – 📖 Game Wiki
The changes to the hunger system in 1.18.30 fixed MCPE-56031 and brought Bedrock to parity with Java for vanilla gameplay. However, players using addons that contain a player.json file experienced a massive increase in the rate of hunger drain. This especially affects realms and community servers that use utility addons like one-player-sleep, and it also affects marketplace content, for example the Realms Celebration world.
The cause of this issue is that new default exhaustion values were created that are much higher for some actions than the values added to the vanilla behavior pack. The defaults even include hunger drain for walking. They also do not match vanilla exhaustion from prior to 1.18.30. The difference between the new vanilla and new defaults is documented here. I conjecture that the defaults are leftover testing values or were made to fix MCPE-152533 without testing other content or considering the wider impact. In any case, since new defaults do not give correct versioning/backward-compatibility I think they can be considered a bug.
Steps to reproduce
- Create a new flat world in survival mode, normal difficulty, coordinates enabled, with cheats on. Set it to always day, no mob spawning, and no weather cycle.
- After you spawn, sprint-jump for 1000 blocks.
- Repeat the above in Java Edition for comparison.
- Repeat (1) - (2) but apply MCPE-154238 Starvation Program.mcpack
to the world, which contains only the player.json file from 1.18.10. When you can no longer run due to hunger, stop jumping and just walk.
Expected result
Same hunger drain in each test.
Observed result
The depletion of initial saturation takes the same amount of time, but once saturation is used up hunger drains much faster with the addon. Hunger also drains with the addon or in an affected Marketplace World while merely walking.
| Milestone | Java | Vanilla 1.18.30 | Using Addon/Marketplace World |
|---|---|---|---|
| Start losing hunger | 440 | 440 | 440 |
| Lost 4 drumsticks | 1000 | 1000 | 600 |
| Can no longer run | n/a | n/a | 725 |
| Starving | n/a | n/a | 1000 |
Food bar showing rapid depletion since 1.18.30 food currently being used much faster than pre-update to 1.18.30
Step 1 - eat enough food to fill the food bar
Step 2 - walk more than 200 blocks and observe the amount of food depletion
Step 3 - note how much the depletion has dropped. In my case more than 3 units.
Prior to 1.18.30 walking 200 blocks would not deplete your food bar by 1 unit
According to the update logs parity with Java should be achieved. This is not the case and parity is broken. Playing Java edition sees the player being able to walk much further with the same amount of food usage.
Expected results - parity with Java edition.
Just as in real life, eating foods with greater nutritional value will keep you feeling full longer. Try eating more meat, fish and stews, and fewer cake and cookies. Generally, anything that can be cooked is also more filling after it is cooked.
According to the wiki article on hunger, the speed at which hunger depletes depends on another variable, "saturation," and different food items restore different levels of saturation.

Examples of this happening^ (note that this is on a brand new world save without any food being eaten, Normal difficulty for both video tests)
– Summary –
Bedrock: 1:38 full depletion while sprint jumping in straight line
Java: 8:20 full depletion while sprint jumping in straight line
Seems like it isn't a parity issue, it's broken
Based on the videos provided, I am going to pass this report on.
Also a parity break from Console Edition, which uses 1.11's exhaustion rates.
I find that sprinting up a long flight of stairs exhausts you very fast too.
@Christan James that’s because you have auto-jump turned on, see MCPE-64793.
ok, ok
My daughter reported a problem like this on the Xbox, version 1.14.60. She's played Minecraft for many years, is much more familiar with the hunger mechanics than I, and I trust her when she says something's wrong with the hunger bar recently.
The behavior she showed me is somewhat like in the Bedrock video provided by Bryan Workiewicz: upon spawn in a new world, multiplayer with her brother, for about the first minute of play her hunger bar stays full as she walks/jumps around on a grass hill (with occasional sprints) and then in the second minute the bar loses 4 of the visual units (6/10 remaining), within the next minute another 4 (2/10 remaining), and then in the 4th minute the bar depletes fully. She was mostly walking in those last 3 minutes to try to conserve.
For some reason her brother hasn't seen the same problem. Possible it's how she walk/jumps, or something attached to her account, an errant setting that she flipped and he didn't?
I can provide video if needed.
I asked her if she had auto-jump on, and she said no. (She showed me that if she walked into a block, she stopped.) She was not running up stairs when I observed the issue; this was a new world and she was on grass hills, and as I mentioned, she was mostly walking/jumping, not running.
can you attach a video?
Sure. Can't attach, it's too large, but can link. My daughter and I captured this video June 8 2020 on Xbox One in a new world in solo play, after she did the run I transcribed above. The rate of hunger bar decline & her behaviors are similar to what I transcribed, but in this run she paused to eat something at 2:57 (at 3/10 units on the bar, changing it to 4/10) but by 3:44 decline had obviously resumed (back to 3/10) and we stopped recording.
The behavior seen through the video is representative of what she feels is wrong... on new worlds "I have to keep finding things to hunt, because just after I get into the world my food starts going down fast, but I already got all the animals in this area, and I'd have to move to a different area and find more animals right away, so I wouldn't have time to do anything else." Although she's familiar with cooking meat and making better foods, she said she didn't have to expect to do that right away in the game. She also continues to say it doesn't happen to her brother when he plays, but I haven't confirmed that.

i think your hunger bar is depleting too slow
You only loose hunger when jumping or attacking, but not sprinting. That’s an unintended behavior.
I created a video exploring the differences that I've found, but the most notable is that, when sprint-jumping at Normal difficulty, the Java version loses a hunger point every ten seconds, while, in the Bedrock version, a hunger point is lost every two seconds.
Additionally, with the starting saturation values of a new world, players on the Java Edition are able to sprint for ~2 minutes longer, and can jump ~6 minutes longer before they begin to take damage from starvation.

Hope this can help!
Affects 1.16.100.57, PS4 hotfixes, IOS 1.16.50, etc..
Affects 1.16.200.56 Beta
ikr since the update
There for sure is an issue. I'm currently crossplaying. 1 player, who made the world on a Switch Lite, one on a phone and me on my laptop. Connected to 1 world on the same wifi (no realm or server). They are having no issue, but my hunger goes down at an insane rate.
I can fill my entire hunger bar and less than a minute of running and almost at 0 hunger bars. Basically unplayable.
affects 1.16.230.56
Unfortunately, the problem is still present in the new 1.17 major update.
Like before, hunger depletion begins ~20 seconds earlier in the Bedrock version, and hunger depletes at a rate of three sprint jumps per hunger point, vs. the 16 sprint jumps per hunger point of the Java version.
affects 1.17.10
I uploaded two potato-quality videos. The java one was taken in 1.17.1
Bedrock is 1.17.2
So it's because of this bug that the saturation of Bedrock's golden carrot is much lower compared to Java, I always noticed this, but I thought it was just an impression.
Affects 1.17.11
It continues to occur on 1.17.40.20
This is really game breaking. I mean it seems like animals spawns more too, but the goal of the game is not to run for food 24/7... especially if you die when you run out of hunger when you run lol. Just "switched" from java and this is killing the game
Still a problem in 1.17.34, hopefully this gets patched, it's really irritating to bring a shulker box of food just for general exploration.
This is more becoming an issue with the new world gen coming in 1.18 soon since the terrains are now much more mountainous and having to jump a lot just to climb those will deplete the hunger faster before even getting food in hand.
Yeah I've definitely noticed after the initial saturation from spawning that you lose all of your hunger from just jumping up the new mountains.
Commentingto say that the bug is still present in the most recent release. I hadn’t even thought about how much this issue would interfere with exploration of the new world generation. Really hope this is able to be fixed before 1.18 officially releases.
Affects 1.18.0
This bug affects alot in 1.18
Please sort this out Mojang, recognize this as a problem.
I'm sick and tired of eating every few seconds when exploring.
This is extremely annoying when having to jump up hills in the new 1.18 terrain.
Affects 1.18.1
Affects 1.18.2 1.18.10.22
affect on 1.18.12
Still having issues with hungry in 1.18.30. Haven't tested if this is a game or BDS issue as only played on our BDS world so far. Have found that hunger goes from full to around 50% after doing things like placing blocks and mining and will again jump down to only 3 haunches. So far it feels like I am using the same amount of food just in a different way.
I'm not affected to this issue anymore while playing in a normal world, maybe it is still an issue in BDS?
This is still an issue on 1.19.1 BDS, I can play from my iPad and join my sons world on the Xbox and the hunger bar stays filled for a long time, if I switch to my BDS the hunger bar depletes super quickly!
If you are having hunger drain faster than expect after 1.18.30 please see
MCPE-154238. If that report does not describe your issue then you should make a new report.
