Stuck on "Saving World" screen when quitting to menu or loading into worlds
Every time I press "Save and Quit' once I decide to close a game, it gets to saving, then freezes until I force quit with task manager. Saves are completely fine, however.
Update: issue seems to be fixed after updating bundled Java to recent version on Windows and running the optimize world function.

Can confirm. This happened to me twice, though I'm unsure on how to reproduce it.
MC-149215suggests that this can occur while quitting in a chunk that doesn't exist.Happens to me too, progress is not saved after force closing. I would greatly appreciate a fix...
Can confirm it still happens in 1.14.3, not sure about 1.14.4 though as I haven't updated yet due to lack of optifine
Can confirm that it happens in 1.14.4. I tried to quit while I was in the End, and when I re-opened it I appeared right outside the End portal at the moment before I had entered. I had to quit out because I couldn't fire arrows, couldn't detonate crystals, and the dragon stopped moving completely.
Does it happen with a specific world? Can you join a world download?
This is currently happening to me. I accidentally left MC open while at work, then after playing for about 5 minutes, I started harvesting some wheat and none of the entities were appearing even though the blocks were breaking. I decided to quit to title, and the game has been on "Saving world" for about 10 minutes.
I just force closed MC with task manager, and logged back into the world. The game seems to have rolled back the ~30 seconds of gameplay before I saved and quit to title, perhaps even before the entities stopped appearing. No harm no foul, thanks for reading!
Edit: Would like to mention this is a world from around a year ago, I haven't played for more than 30 minutes every few months in about 5 years, but was interested in checking out the new updates, and simply stuck with a world I'd been messing around in a while back. So my world was initially created in another version I believe.
this has been happening often to me. most recently. i fell off the side of my survival world by being in an unloaded chunk, and got trapped. when i tried to fix it by leaving the world and coming back, i got stuck on the saving world screen. i wanted to see if it would resolve itself eventually, but it has been over 2 days and it is still stuck on that screen.

Same for me, I exploring and write a map, return home and in about 100 blocks from home the game is stuck. All mobs stopped, my new chat messages are not displayed (single player). I waited 1 minute and tried to save the game, but saving stuck too. The processor goes up to 100%. During a panic, I found this page. Reading all the comments, I just left the computer for 10 minutes and the game was saved successfully!

Same for Reporter, I have a folder with a game on my hard drive created through Symbolic Links (Link Shell Extension), for less damage to the main SSD.
Using the Optifine F3 HD Ultra, on Minecraft 1.14.4. Render distance is 32 chunks.
I think the lag is related to a chicken farm. I have a chicken farm with 50 heads in one block with a vine.
I just recently started having this issue as well. I am on a world with mods and all of a sudden my commands stopped working (I created the world to allow cheats and they worked up until yesterday) After my commands stopped working I would open to lan to allow cheats but then i would try to exit out and my screen would be stuck on the saving world screen in which I have to force quit out of.
Just happened to me on PS4. After finally forcing the application to close it stayed frozen for a little while longee before eventually crashing. I've had the game for 2 days and have already lost count of the crashes.

Can anyone experience this issue in 1.15(.x)?
Same issue here on Windows 10. Java 1.15 and 1.15.1.
Original worlds created for 1.13, updated to 1.14 with no issues. 1.15 causes this issue intermittently as well as others.
After traveling long distances, world seems to freeze. Can still move, but cannot interact with anything. When closing game, it hangs on the save screen.

Okay. I continued working on it. I haven't played long enough to replicate the issue after making some changes. Those include optimizing the world in the game's "Edit World" screen, and updating Java to the latest JDK. Will upload world soon.
So you fixed your issue after updating the bundled Java to 13.0.1.0 and run the optimize world function.
Anyone else having this issue?
@Johnibur i am. my worlds aren't saving nor letting me use the commands /gamemode even though cheats are enabled.
Me to. It happened after a night of AFK fishing. I can attach my world too. I'm running the newest Java RE and I'm pretty sure my world was already optimized for 1.15.2
This exact thing happened to me, I was terraforming some mountains using the clone and fill commands, I changed the random tick speed to super high so the grass blocks would turn to dirt and they didn’t. I changed the tick speed back and the went back to terraforming the rest of the mountains while I waited. I was building a adventure map and decided to test something using invisibility, and when I gave myself invisibility nothing happened. I tried other commands and they didn’t work either. Even the command blocks I had placed and had previously put lots of very long commands in had been wiped. I tried typing more commands in and for some reason the done button as well as the other command block settings were unpressable, they where still there but they had a dark grey texture like a setting your not allowed to touch. I exited the world and when it said saving for five straight minutes I got worried. I clicked the x on the corner and it did nothing, so I decided to leave it and see if it could save. When I got back it had closed. I tried loading the world again and it had saved the changes until the commands stopped, and they still didn’t work. I broke my command blocks and tried again. This time I had to use program manager to close it. It also still didn’t work. I re booted my pc, fiddled with world settings, backups and nothing fixed the world. It’s still broken right now and I’d love an easy fix. I also tried leaving it as long as it needed. I wasn’t watching but eventually I was at the main menu, when I loaded the world it didn’t save. I suspect that if you are running a lot of commands and making a lot of changes really quickly It could break the saving for that world. I might be wrong but I’m not gonna use repeating command blocks for the fill command anymore. It didn’t seem to affect my other worlds. By the way I’m in mine craft 1.15 and the world this happened in was created in minecraft 1.15 so it hasn’t even had to be updated. I will post again if I find what happened or a potential fix
Same thing happened to my world just now, singleplayer adventure mode map I've been working on. I noticed that none of my command blocks were working. Not only that, but re-entering the world, I found out that every single command block I used has been cleared - there's no text in them any longer, even after enabling cheat with LAN. Anyone knows anything about this? I feel pretty down over this
Saving the world gets you stuck, no crash or freeze it just saves forever. I have ended the process and then it crashes. I'm not sure if the empty command blocks happened after that.
Redstone is "frozen" too. What was powered can't be unpowered, and new redstone I put down can't be powered by anything. Won't let me do commands or anything. It's just the world, other worlds and an older backup works.
Update - for some reason running the world on a multiplayer server works just fine. Tried copying the world back to singleplayer, same error. No clue what it is
@Daniel Johansson, could you please create a separate report for that, attach the affected world and describe in detail which actions you performed (starting from opening the world) before this issue occurred?
Thank god that I found this, I was freaking out and didn't know what to do because I had been building for 3 hours and I set tick speed higher so the grass can grow and then nothing was functioning, I tried to rejoin but it was stuck at saving world. I was frightened until I saw that the save was uneffected.
Can confirm. Happened to me in my hardcore world after being afk on a skeleton farm for a few hours, at first I was able to open a single chest once but suddenly I couldn't open any container. I tried to save and quit to title, but the game got stuck in "saving world".
The world was created in 1.16.4 and updated to 1.16.5.
I'm having this problem on 1.16.5 when loading into worlds. I've tried restarting my computer, reinstalling Minecraft, and tried different worlds. Still having this problem when loading into worlds, single player, multiplayer and realms. Nothing seems to work. I'm using the newest Java version on Windows 10. Been having this problem for multiple days now. Game is completely unplayable and my realm subscription is being used up even though i cant use it, very annoying.
Seconding braycam1's experience. I just bought Java Edition for my son this afternoon, and it's literally never successfully loaded a world. We create a new world and it does the percentage countup, briefly says "Joining world", then switches to "Saving world", at which point the application stops responding. I let it sit in that state for 15 minutes, and nothing changed.
We can see the worlds we've tried to set up when trying to play single player, so it seems like something is being saved – but as with trying to create a new world, trying to load one of the existing worlds does the percentage countup (though much fast than when creating a new world), bounces straight from "Joining world" to "Saving world", and then hangs.
All of this happens in both 1.16.5 and the 21w16a snapshot. I've tried rebooting the machine, a Surface Book 2 running WIndows 10 Pro; making sure Windows is up to date; rebooting again; and so on. The problem has yet to be resolved.
I was going to report this separately, but I saw that other bugs reporting the behavior braycam1 and I have seen are closed as duplicates of this bug, so, here I am.

There's a lot more to it than that, but that seems to be where things went wrong.
Last followup for now: I completely removed the game by renaming %appdata\.minecraft and then re-installed the game from scratch using my administrator account. I launched the game via the Launcher and logged into a different Microsoft account so the game wouldn't know I'd bought it. I was able to play the demo world without any problems. I quit the game and switched users. Then I logged into the purchasing Microsoft account, and launched via the launcher. When I created a new single player world, the same exception was thrown, leading to infinite GL error logspam until I force-quit the game.
If anyone knows where I can go to get a refund for this worthless purchase, I'd appreciate it.
A fix was found for my situation: the max framerate was somehow set to zero. See https://twitter.com/Ephys_/status/1386957150078001154 for a look at the part of the code that was causing my problem. I don’t know how the framerate was limited to zero, but raising it cleared up the problem for me. (Maybe there should be a lower bound of 1 on that preference?)
It was the Max Framerate for me as well. I'm not sure how your max framerate ended up at 0 but i'm quite sure that mine was due to me using different clients, one of them being Lunar Client where if you put the max framerate at the lowest possible it goes to Vsync mode. Thanks!
This happened to me on Linux Mint 20.1 (not via VM). My CPU is a Ryzen 5 3400G with integrated Vega 11 graphics. On modded 1.16.5, I located a specific biome in the Nether amd then teleported to it. The chunks stopped loading after awhile and the chunks to my Nether portal had unloaded and wouldn't load. I proceeded to press Save and Quit, and even 50 minutes later, it still hasn't saved my game. Initially, I thought that this might be Optifine, but my case perfectly matches

This is also happening to me in my custom map for 1.17.1 (I'm using data packs and structure blocks intensively).
Also, don't know if this is related or could be the cause of this problems but I'm having some light bugs and chunks sometimes seem to not load (and entities in those chunks get bugged)
UPDATE: I've found out why my map was getting stuck in the saving world screen. Basically, each tick I had a sign placed at 0 255 0 for doing some text manipulation for a custom HUD and then replaced with air.
If I entered the world with this part of the data pack off, the chunks generated fine and exiting the world was fast. But If I then activated that part of the data pack and reloaded it the chunks would no longer load and saving the world got stuck.
For fixing it I basically placed the sign at 0 1 0, closer to the player (because If I reloaded the data pack while being close to 0 255 0, the problem didn't happen)
I know my case might not be related at all, but it might be a lead for finding the problem.
