Normally Axolotls are slow on the ground for obvious reasons.
If you leash Axolotl they become really fast. They start to spin around the player very quickly.

How I Found The Bug: While I was trying to get an axolotl into a boat I decided to use a lead and it got in then the lead popped off of the axolotl then I then decided to break the boat and then the axolotl was sometimes trying to follow me when in its sight range.
How to reproduce:
- Find or spawn in an axolotl
- Use the lead on the axolotl and then remove the lead from the axolotl
- Try to get it to see you and it may follow (It is kind of easier to reproduce when there are no other distractions) and may also follow you out of water and then realises that it is out of water and try to go back in
It can be hard to reproduce but I have managed to get it to follow me a few times.

Note: I had no tropical fish in my inventory or hotbar

Summary:
Axolotls don't quickly spin in a circle around the player when they are leashed. In Java Edition, they do, which is intentional per MC-208626.
Steps to Reproduce:
- Spawn an axolotl
- Take a lead and right click on the axolotl
Observed Results:
The axolotl doesn't spin in a circle around the player.
Expected Results:
The axolotl should spin in a circle around the player.

This is my favorite glitch, even better than hyperspeed boats. I hope they make a special NBT tag for hyperspeed spinning axolotls on leads.

I’m surprised this hasn’t been fixed yet, but either way I just randomly started thinking about this issue. Could it have something to do with pathfinding towards water? Maybe the code that makes it look for and move to water and the code for being on a lead are interfering with each other somehow? Something like, it’s trying to check for water but can’t because it’s tied up and so it just bugs out and spins. I have no idea if that’d be it, but I can’t think of a reason that leads would be different for these guys unless some other aspect unique to them is messing with it.
edit: seems this may still apply when in water, so maybe not.

I can't believe this bug tagged as "Works As Intended"...
No offense, but I cannot believe that this “works as intended”. It doesn’t exactly ruin gameplay, but I still think it’s annoying if you want to take some axolotls with you to an ocean monument or whatever. This isn’t a problem on Bedrock either. I could be entirely wrong and not remember, but hasn’t this had an assignee for a while now? It wouldn’t have taken this long to switch to “works as intended” if that truly was the case, right? Was this bug just so hard to fix that it became a good old “it’s not a bug, it’s a feature” deals? Again, no offense, but this doesn’t seem right to me.
Bedrock doesn’t have this issue. How is this WAI? It’s an annoying bug.

)The issue can still be reproduced in water, as per the comment from Sniper1.1 below
I was able to reproduce the issue in 1.20.5, but the axolotl must be in water. They seem fine on land.
