Disagree with resolution. It's very easy to get into a position where you can see the portal like this. It's weird, ugly, breaks immersion, and has potential to be used for trolling.

MC-3366 is fixed in 21w13a.
Steps to reproduce
- /setblock ~ ~2 ~ end_portal
- Look up
Current observation
Nothing above you (see the image with a timestamp name).
Expected observation
The end portal block has a bottom texture (javafix_MC3366.png).
Although MC-3366 fixed the end portal block being visible from the bottom, it is still invisible when viewed from the side. If the portal effect was applied to the side, it may end up looking a lot like a gateway portal, so an alternative fix would be to shrink the hitbox so it has no thickness.
Steps to Reproduce
- Summon an end portal block.
/setblock ~ ~ ~3 minecraft:end_portal
- Look at the sides of this block.
- Take note as to whether or not end portals are transparent from the sides.
Observed Behavior
End portals are transparent from the sides.
Expected Behavior
End portals would not be transparent from the sides. Instead, they should have some kind of side texture and not just be completely transparent or the end portal block itself should be made thin so that it doesn't have a side texture.
Was supposed to be fixed. See MC-3366.
Are you on Java edition 1.17 without any mods?
This is intended per the fix of MC-3366
You can only see the portal from above, works as intended.
Also, why is the end portal 4 blocks long and wide?
