Wall signs float slightly in front of the blocks they have been placed on
The Bug
Wall signs have a small gap between them and the block they are placed on. It's not a huge issue, but it looks odd.
Steps to Reproduce
- Place down a sign on a wall.
- Look closely at where the sign connects to the wall.
Observed Behavior
Wall signs float slightly in front of the block that they're supported by.
Expected Behavior
Wall signs would not float slightly in front of the block that they're supported by. Instead, they should be properly attached to the block that they're on.
Potential Fix
This could be fixed by converting wall signs to use a block model, and only using entity rendering for the text, to bring them closer in line with other blocks.

Signs have 12 pixels from top to bottom. However, there are another 4 block pixels above and below the sign, which total to 20, rather than the 16 that would be expected. Also, the sign is 24 pixels wide, rather than the expected 16.
This (alongside several other sign issues such as MC-2836, MC-28561, MC-157547 and MC-195472) could be fixed by using block models for signs rather than entity rendering, and adjusting the proportions for the signs.

How is this not considered a duplicate of MC-2836? Both that and this are the same thing: signs aren't completely against the wall.
Well, you can only access the back face because of MC-2836. So perhaps this is a duplicate of that ticket.

And signs on fences have a huge gap.
This gap prevents Z-fighting between the backside of the sing and the face of the block its attached to
btw: i noticed this a long time ago in beta 1.6
This gap never really bothered me, don't think it's a bug but if the gap can be tweaked, go ahead!
This isn't a bug.
Please, don't post minor annoyances to the bugtracker.
Is this actually invalid? Seems like an oversight to me. Dunno why it would be intentional behaviour. If this is re-opened, it affects 1.14 and 1.14-pre4.
Just because it's been like this forever doesn't mean it's right.
I don't know about the Minecraft internals but I imagine changing signs might break things.

This actually allows you to write on the back of a placed wall sign.Never mind, the hitbox actually extends all the way to the supporting wall. So this bug is purely visual and has no effect on sign editing.
In 23w43a
While this is a bug, it allows for some cool secret messages. while I was able to write on the back on macOS by positioning my crosshair just right, but you can just use a bottom slab, write on the back, and convert that slab to a full block by placing another slab
Can confirm in all 1.20 versions.
