The bug
Bows can be used to attack through thin surfaces such as doors, fences and glass panes. This also applies to other projectiles, such as tridents, snowballs, eggs, ender pearls, fireballs, and fishing bobbers.
How to reproduce
- Attract a zombie, spider, or angry zombie pigman to a closed door. (These mobs will press right up against the door rather than just standing on the adjacent block.)
- Fire a charged arrow at the door. (Back out of right-click range or turn aside at first so that you don't open the door instead.)
- The arrow may hit the mob. (It can depend on how the exact distance and power; it is more reliable with doors than fences.)
I would expect the arrow to always hit the door, as melee attacks do.

The bug
Mobs can attack you through blocks and corners due to miscalculation of attack radius.
How to reproduce
- Build a completely sealed off house with no windows or doors from opaque blocks like planks or cobblestone or the like, leave some blocks in the inventory for you to place in step 7.
- Make a two-block tall one-block wide empty doorway in the wall for you to go through and to seal off with blocks in step 7.
- Outside the house, spawn a Ravager.
- Switch to survival mode.
- The Ravager should start going for you.
- Run in the house, let it hit you once through the empty doorway.
- Seal off the doorway with two blocks.
Result: The Ravager is still able to hit the player, from about two blocks away, with a complete wall every possible place in between.
Expected: The Ravager can't attack the player any more.

Old example
I just created a villager in MCEdit with the Create Shops filter to have a custom shop. I saved it and launched MC. The villager started to run around normally in his house but then he went to the door where a zombie was knocking at (wooden door on normal difficulty) and the villager blinked red and got damage and after a few hits he died. The zombie killed him through a closed door and the villager did not run away he always came back to the door until he died.

Code analysis
Based on 1.11.2 decompiled using MCP 9.35 rc1
The problem seems to be the method net.minecraft.entity.ai.EntityAIAttackMelee.checkAndPerformAttack(EntityLivingBase, double) and methods overriding it. They all only test if the mob to attack is in a certain radius to the attacker without testing if blocks are between them.
Possible solutions
Bounding box check
The current behavior would be replaced by only allowing mobs to attack other mobs when their bounding boxes intersect.
Ray casting
The current behavior would be extended to require a ray cast from the attacker to the mob to attack (excluding liquids and blocks without collision box) to return no colliding blocks. Possible use y + height / 1.5 as attack height or have a method for mobs to define their attack height(s?). The height at which the mob to attack will be attacked could for example be y + height / 2 or with multiple tries depending on the height of the mob, for example

Some entities have their interaction box extended outwards their hitbox, which seems to be intended as shown in MC-266871 and MC-77613. However, there's a small issue that affects these entities, and it's the fact that due to their extended interaction box you are able to hit them through blocks.
While this is an extreme edge case in the usual vanilla gameplay, this allows players to redirect these projectiles behind thin walls (although this might not be an issue if MC-3059 gets fixed, depending on what the fix is). This also affects static projectiles that are used in some custom maps or servers due to them being targetable behind blocks, blocking the player from placing/destroying blocks or allowing these projectiles to be redirected while not looking at them directly.
How to reproduce
- Build the configuration shown in the attachments.
- Summon a fireball or wind charges in the corner of the glass.
- Move to the other side of the glass, behind the projectile.
- Notice how you're unable to place blocks while looking at the entity, and are able to hit it behind the glass.

The mobs hit box is likely going through the door itself. You should also be able to punch the mobs through the door. other wise it could be a problem with the arrow hit box going through the door itself. Testing now.
This is specific to arrows. Clarifying the description a bit. (There is a case where you can melee-hit mobs through diagonal corners, which is not what I'm reporting here.)
From my point of view this is a very cool feature and not a bug. I can shoot through doors! How awesome is that?

I just tried it and I could only hit the mob when he was standing up against the door. (Like when you can see his hands coming through the door model.) I tested all of the various doors and it was the same. Locke is correct on this... likely the hitbox coming through the door.
As an archer I can say that with the exception of the steel door... if you fire an arrow at it and a person is standing against it on the other side.... they're going to have a bad time. I would say this is working as intended, actually.
This glitch is related to the villagers being killed by a zombie through a door and the likely reason is the hitbox. There is another glitch with fences if you point the cursor at one with a bow and try to fire an arrow, it does the placing a block animation instead of charging the bow.

It doesn't matter whether the mob is shot with an arrow or melee attacked through the door, or if they can be hit through a corner, because it is the same glitch that causes these things to happen, which is the hitboxes going through the door or diagonal corner.

Not completely sure this is a bug as it makes sense you can do that, because there are holes in both.

The bug isn't that it can go through the holes, the bug is that it deals damage though the solid block.

@KingSupernova: It doesn't make sense that the arrow can go through the door, but it does make sense for the arrow to go through the holes in the door, because it is being realistic, the same for fences.
The Papa reminder, the door can be retexured, like the spruce door, then it doesn't make sense, the current way of arrows (from a distance) sticking in the door rather then going trough looks more intended to me then making it able to go trough
@FVbico: Would the same be for fences? Because The Papa is a good friend of mine, and he actually likes this feature, he used it in one of his singleplayer worlds.

This is an issue that affects most, if not all projectiles. You can reproduce this with arrows, tridents, snowballs, eggs, ender pearls, shulker bullets, small fireballs, or even the fishing rod's bobber (haven't tested llama spit).
As someone noted previously, part of the fired projectile's hitbox sits inside the block it intersects, and thus it intersects the entity that is behind the other side of the block, getting hit. This might also be the cause of MC-2164.
The expected here would be that the projectile hitbox would only collide and stop at the very boundary of the block so it doesn't get any further, this is how most entities behave when colliding with blocks.
