Stepping down while sneaking allows falling off of blocks
While sneaking, if one steps down a half-block, they can fall off of the blocks being snuck on. For instance, descending stairway while sneaking while walking at a diagonal will result in falling off of the stairs, instead of remaining on them as would happen on a flat path.
This happens with any block that can be stepped down from while sneaking, including stairs, slabs, redstone repeaters, trapdoors, and snow. Repeaters in particular are annoying for redstone lines built without any kind of walls next to them.
Oddly, carpet is not affected, despite it having a slightly raised hitbox.

This would be working as intended. The issue here is really that one key does many different things:
- Hide your name tag and muffle footsteps in PvP.
- Slow you down to improve movement precision or balance PvP.
- Prevent dangerous drops.
- Prevent drops at all.
See also MC-2404 which is closely related.
This and MC-2404 are really the same thing. Over there you can find more about the merits (or lack thereof) of particular solutions.
A single-frame tap makes you move about a fifth of a block, on ground which slows you down more than air. You'd still fall off if you killed air control, but now leaving no way to compensate. Air control is rather important in games, too.
A different threshold can solve some individual cases, but never staircases.
I think an invisible barrier in mid-air is best in the end. Its task should be to make sure that if the game sees something below that allows you to sneak off of something, you will land on it when doing so. It could be made to only work at low momentum, or there could even be a bit of state that tracks when you snuck off that way, to prevent it from stopping you when it really shouldn't.
MC-2404 is actually completely different. That one is about the fact that air control can move you in midair. It's even less of a bug than this one.
An "invisible barrier in mid-air" is exactly the same as regular sneaking. What matters is when the game lets you fall off (when it removes the barrier).
I would argue that MC-2404 is about the bug you are describing; once falling, it is possible to end up falling more than 1 block because holding down the sneak key doesn't do anything while in midair. This ticket describes how it is possible to fall off blocks that are shorter than 1 block tall even if you don't end up falling more than 1 block in total. I wouldn't say that this is obviously intended or a bug, but I will mark it so that Mojang can choose.

This is actually a duplicate of MC-2404, not just related; the lantern has 2 collision boxes, the one in the center is slightly higher (just like the model). Walking off, you're in the air for long enough to fall over the other box. Which is exactly what MC-2404 is saying, but with stairs/slabs as examples.
Repost of MC-2404 for bedrock edition
Original description
While sneaking, if one steps down a half-block, they can fall off of the blocks being snuck on. For instance, descending stairway while sneaking while walking at a diagonal will result in falling off of the stairs, instead of remaining on them as would happen on a flat path.
This happens with any block that can be stepped down from while sneaking, including stairs, slabs, redstone repeaters, trapdoors, and snow. Repeaters in particular are annoying for redstone lines built without any kind of walls next to them.
The bug
Sorry if that title is a bit confusing. I'll try to explain it a bit better here than in the title. When you're trying to place a block at the side of another block, you hold shift (sneak), and you don't fall off of the block you're standing on, even though you're not actually completely on the block.
The bug I am reporting here is that in 20w27a, this also applies to flying in creative mode when the player is 0.6 or less blocks above a lower block and is using their sneak and jump keys at the same time.
I could not confirm this in 1.16.1, so this is likely related to the fix of MC-2404.
A player can fly above the block while sneak-jumping (I'm not really sure what to call that) without any restriction, but when trying to leave the area directly above that block (or any blocks next to it or next to those- same rules apply for sneaking in survival mode), they will not be able to.
How to reproduce
- Place any block down.
- Fly 0.6 blocks or less above that block.
- Hold shift and space (or other keybinds for sneak and jump) at the same time.
- Notice how if you try to leave the area directly above that block, you will not be able to.
More information
The video clip I am attaching (MojiraFlight2.mp4
) shows the player in the nether. This bug can also be reproduced outside of the nether, that's just where I was when I recorded the clip. The video is only in 480p quality due to the file size limitations of Jira.
While working on my project (a massive piglin bartering farm with automatic sorting and shulker box filling), it was really difficult to have to un-sneak-jump-whatever-its-called every time I fly above a block. The machine has taken ten hours so far to make, and because everything in it is so close together, I experienced this bug a lot.

This is actually fixed in 20w27a, because MC-2404 was fixed.
How can you reproduce this in 1.16.2-pre1? This doesn’t work for me. This should not no longer happen in upcoming 1.16.2, because MC-2404 was fixed.
Duplicate of MC-2404
Before 20w27a, you were able to jump out of 2 block high spaces while sneaking. But due to the fix of MC-2404 this has led to a case where this is no longer possible. The behavior now seems to be like if sneaking applies an "invisible barrier" on you that has some side-effects with knockback resistance or status effects (See MC-200282 & MC-199326), which in this case is jumping.
While it doesn't seem to be a very noticeable issue at first, it gets very problematic to walk through narrow places such as diagonal stairs or underground caves in situations where remaining sneaky was critical, such as PvP on servers or when trying to avoid sculk sensors in deep dark / ancient cities.
How to reproduce:
- Create a void world.
- Place a block under and above you (see attachment).
- Try to get out while sneaking and jumping at the same time.
You can't.
This was intentionally fixed, see MC-2404.
This was caused by the fix of MC-2404
Summary: If you're holding crouch and you are moving at the edge downwards, you can likely fall off of the staircase. This bug was fixed in Java, but hasn't made the cut on Bedrock.
Steps to reproduce:
- Make a big staircase with stairs (any kind will work, did it with polished blackstone)
- Go to the top of the staircase
- Hold the crouch button
- Move downwards at the edge
What should've happened: You stay on the staircase
What did happened: You fall off of the staircase
Images: Find them at MC-2404. I'm unable to provide a Bedrock Image of the bug.
Hmm, now that i think of this, is it really intended and not a side-effect of fixing MC-2404? After some hours of gameplay i noticed this behavior so many times when exploring caves and sometimes it gets really annoying, i'd rather like to have a proper dev response about this. Also, it's almost the same issue as MC-199326 which got marked as Community Consensus.
The way that sneaking now works since MC-2404 is fixed, is that sneaking still makes an invisible border to prevent falling off blocks if you are up to 0.6 blocks above the ground. Before, it did only if you were on the ground. A way to fix this issue could be by making sneaking only make the border, if you are standing on the ground or falling, but not when moving upward. This would allow you to get out of it and it would also allow mobs to knock you out of it.
After the fix of MC-2404, players with knockback resistance (specifically above ~0.2%) seem unable to be knocked off of the edge of blocks by normal hits when they are shifting / sneaking.
As a cause of this, you only need a single piece of netherite armor to be immune of dangerous falls when attacked by mobs or players in any way, which doesn't seem to be intentional.
How to reproduce
- Create a void world.
- Equip any piece of netherite armor.
- Summon a skeleton close to the edge of the stone platform and let it shoot at you.
- Sneak, and notice how the skeleton doesn't knock you into the void.
The fix of MC-2404 has led to players not being able to step down a block while sneaking with a block above the head.
You now need to mine the two blocks above, and to the side of the player to jump a full block up and then fall two, onto the block you wanted to get to.
This is really only important for multiplayer, but there a very significant problem. Because when trying to hide or get past someone without being seen underground, you have to usually not only dig horizontal tunnels. And when making underground stairs up, you would have to make them 3 blocks high to get down again, instead of only 2 blocks. That's 50% more blocks to break to make a flight of stairs, and in my opinion quite significant.
It probably conflicts with the fix of MC-2404 entirely and will therefore probably from now on be seen as intended behaviour, I just wanted to ask for confirmation of this, or if it were even possible to fix both.
Since MC-2404 was fixed, this probably unintended side effect was introduced. You can see the player hitbox is half a block over the block they're standing on, despite this the player doesn't drop down like how it's always been.
Video titled 1.17.1 shows current behaviour, video titled 1.15.2 shows expected behaviour (how it worked until 20w27a).

It's because in between steps you fall for a split second, which invalidates the sneaking. It seems to happens either between stair blocks, or even in the transition between steps of the same stair block.
I don't think this is a bug. It also happens when you are on a ledge and you stand on a repeater and shift to the block next to it.
same for half slabs
Seems like a bug to me. I thought the point of sneaking was so that you couldn't fall off edges.
The sneaking will not stop you falling of non-full blocks (like stairs, slabs and repeaters
well that renders the sneaking feature useless on slabs/stairs
Why would you need it on slabs or stairs? You can't fall more than 1 block.
Anon, I don't understand what you mean. You need it for the same reason you need it on any other block, so you can look over the edge without falling. And of course you can fall more than 1 block if there if more than a one block space below the spot where you fall off.
As far as I can tell, when the slab is on top of the block, which is one block above the ground, sneaking works fine. It is only sneaking off a slab that is 0.5 blocks off the ground where the sneaking doesn't work.
Have you thought about when you are making roofs for your houses and you are sneaking while descending down the stairs, and then you fall off. Fatal if it were a tall house
I was able to sneak down the roof, but not off of it. I don't see how that could cause damage.
That is exactly what I am talking about. The "half point" of the stair block is the point in which sneaking does not work.
But I can only seem to fall off stairs if there is NO drop.

Duplicate of
MC-2334?I don't think it's a duplicate, but they are both already related. The underlying code may be the same for this bug.
Affects 1.6.2.
Affects 1.7.2. No longer an issue at the "half step" of the stairs. You can only fall when sneaking down the steps on the edge.
You know the purpose of sneaking is to avoid falling of edges. So this feature is still bugged
Maybe the player is not onGround for a short amount of time while "falling" from the upper stair to the lower stair and for that short moment the sneak function doesn't work anymore.
Still an issue. Photos added to illustrate. If you sneak directly toward the side of a stair you will not fall, but continue holding the sneak key and then move a half block down you will fall off the edge.
Yes thanks, that's what we found out in the meantime too.
Confirmed in 1.8-pre1
I believe this is more of a fundamentally quirky feature than a bug.
Sneaking only keeps you on top of a block if you're touching it. It also allows you to drop a small distance, which is exactly what you're doing when walking down stairs (or half slabs or the like). During the drop it doesn't do anything for you, so you can fall off at that time.
All of the potential fixes have significant side effects:
The bottom line is that something will have to change in a big way. What do you want to break to fix this? I can't rule it out but it won't be pretty.
In short, what would be ugly about holding the player back in midair? I think that would be the best action taken, if any is.
Does MC look at blocks, the potential drop, or something else when deciding to keep a player from dropping? I imagine this would be easier to patch for the second option.
Neko Alexander Perdomo: The most basic extension would put you to a dead stop almost everywhere in mid-air. If you add a special case, the world is now permeated by invisible barriers, dwarfing invisible fence extensions. It plain makes no sense. If you add another special case to only make it work at very low speeds, descending while hiding from other players is still a much bigger pain than it already is. You can't win.
The movement algorithm iteratively checks whether your prospective bounding box has too much empty space below it. If so, it's slowly moved back to your previous position. Whoever coded it looks confused, but it looks like it should work in the end. Interaction with other adjustments might be responsible for those times when sneaking fails.
This is not actually a bug. What happens is that the game looks at where you are trying to fall to and sees that it is less than a block down, so it lets you fall. As you are falling, you move yourself slightly to the side with the movement keys, and you go off the edge of the stairs. This is no more a bug then the fact that lava kills you. If you don't want to fall off, don't walk towards the edge.
This is intended. It's your fault for moving yourself while falling. This report should be closed.
jonathan2520, it's already possible to float in mid-air, sneaking just makes it easier to get there. As shown in my screenshot, no part of my body is actually touching the stairs, and yet I'm considered standing on them. If you sneak straight towards the edge of the stairs, you cannot fall. The world is already "permeated by invisible barriers".
KingSupernova, your opinion has been noted, and there's no need to repeat it. If someone at Mojang directs us to close it, then we will. Or they can do it themselves. Or they can leave it open, or they can change the behavior. It's their decision to make, not yours.
[Mod] Torabi: That's not really going anywhere. You can pull the entire game apart like that. Why don't you simply fall over, given the way your legs move? Right, because you only fall over when you die, moments before vanishing in a puff of smoke. Not that you'd normally see that in case of your own body because your arm (the only part of your body you can see in first person) disappears. Makes sense.
Simplified bounding volumes are much more reasonable than air barriers where you couldn't possibly grab something at any level. Sneaking basically activates simple AI that helps you not to fall off and shouldn't change physics drastically. So far the only deviation is that it makes you stop faster, at a point where you can usually stop almost as fast.
Okay, enough pedantry. There are relevant arguments up here somewhere. I have nothing to add.

Hi there!
The fix of this bug has likely led to a new bug,
MC-193662. Players in creative mode flying above blocks while holding the sneak key down are restrained to that block. I'm pretty sure that the fix for this has led to the newer bug, but I could be wrong (it could be other changes in the snapshot that led to this). The fix of this has led to players not being able to step down a block while sneaking with a block above the head (
MC-209925).You now need to mine the two blocks above, and to the side of the player to jump a full block up and then fall two, onto the block you wanted to get to.
It probably conflicts with the fix of this bug and will therefore probably from now on be seen as intended behaviour.
This bugfix brought more problems and side effects than good things.
