Unable to perform many right click actions when targeting the top face of blocks placed at y=255
The bug
Beds can be placed at y=255, however, beds placed at this height cannot be used and give an odd error message.
In chat, this message is
"Height limit for building is 256"
which might make sense when I'm placing the bed, but not when I'm trying to use it.
In the console, the following message appears:
"2013-03-07 07:19:37 [CLIENT] [INFO] [CHAT] §7Height limit for building is 256"
The "section 7" bit is obviously a glitch.
This applies to all blocks with a right-click action (repeater, comparator, lever, bed etc.). When right-clicking the upper side of a block this message appears. Any other side works fine.

Confirmed for
- 14w31a Somehow the game thinks you want to create a fire, which you are not doing when using a fire charge or flint and steel without holding SHIFT
Probably duplicates MC-11211
Wilco Wolters, that's because the layer 255 is protected. The only way of putting blocks there is via pistons, or commands, or if they were generated naturally. There are a lots of tickets that treats about this, like MC-11211, MC-33450 and MC-69878, but this one is not related to them as it treats about the slider, not the building height itself.
This is a dupe of MC-11211.
This report is a duplicate of MC-11211, please mark it as such.
Dupe of MC-11211.
Dupe of MC-11211.
There seems to be a lot of confusion with this report, so to clarify, this report is actually about 3 separate issues. The first one is that blocks can generate up to level 255, which is intended. That's the height limit. The second one is that the blocks actually do generate that high, causing unnatural flat areas. That's a problem with the preset, not minecraft. It should be taken up with its creator, Panguino. The third one is that mobs spawn at that level, which is MC-68565. In the comments, people are discussing two completely different bugs, MC-39120 and MC-11211.
Dupe of MC-11211
...which makes this a duplicate of MC-11211.
[Mod] redstonehelper: Hmm.. MC-11211 is about being unable to interact with blocks. Maybe you could edit that issue and mention spawn eggs?
By the way and completely out of topic, how do you make so a toolbar shows up when you comment an issue? I use [MC-X|<url>]. I've looked at the text formatting help, but I didn't find anything.
No clue. MC-11211 is about right-clicking in general, will update description and title.

Relates to MC-11211. The message gets only sent when aiming at the top side of the block. Java had a very simelar issue. It was completey impossible to preform any right action while looking at the top side of a block at y-level 255.
The bug
Of course you cannot place blocks when aiming at a block that is outside the worldborder, however you cannot even use any items at all when aiming at a block that is outside the world border. Relates to MC-11211.
Here is a list of affected items (may be incomplete):
Food
Potions
Bow
Trident
Crossbow
Shield
Snowball, Egg, Ender pearl
Armor (equipping by right clicking)
Eyes if ender
Experience bottles
Empty maps
Book and quill
Written books
Additionally you also cannot use any items that spawn entitey, like spawn eggs, armor stands, fire works rockets and item frames, but that is likely intended, because you cannot place blocks outside the world border.
How to reproduce:
- Go to the worldborder by teleporting or reducing the worldborder using a command
- Target a block outside the world border
- Try to use any of the listed items
You can’t.
As soon as you look away from the block you will be able to use it.
I was unable to reproduce this issue in 1.20.1, and the only possible cause I can think of is MC-11211, which was fixed over three years ago. Could you please attach an F3 screenshot or a video to this issue? Thank you ![]()

Please link to this comment in the description
The following is based on decompiled version of Minecraft 1.9 using MCP 9.24 beta. All method and class names are the names used in the decompiled version.
The reason why this happens is because the method net.minecraft.network.NetHandlerPlayServer.func_184337_a(CPacketPlayerTryUseItem) is used when the player tries to use an item. The problem is that this method will test if the placed block would be above the build limit before testing if the player is playing a block or if he is only interacting with a block or using an item.
Little error in the description: In 1.9 you can place full blocks at y=255, not only torches, etc. I don't know when exactly it changed.
