My bad, MC-69683.
When the player holds an enchanted azalea, flowering azalea, small dripleaf, big dripleaf or spore blossom, the enchantment glint experiences z-fighting from all perspectives. This is especially noticeable with the big dripleaf and spore blossom.
To test, run any of the following commands:
/give @s minecraft:azalea{Enchantments:[{id:"minecraft:smite",lvl:1}]}
/give @s minecraft:flowering_azalea{Enchantments:[{id:"minecraft:smite",lvl:1}]}
/give @s minecraft:small_dripleaf{Enchantments:[{id:"minecraft:smite",lvl:1}]}
/give @s minecraft:big_dripleaf{Enchantments:[{id:"minecraft:smite",lvl:1}]}
/give @s minecraft:spore_blossom{Enchantments:[{id:"minecraft:smite",lvl:1}]}
Then hold the given item(s) in your hand and look around. The z-fighting will be readily apparent.
It's worth noting that this does not occur with scaffolding despite scaffolding having a double-sided face.
Relates to MC-69683.

The bug
Beds are considerably more resource-intensive to render compared to other blocks in the game, even those with more complex models. This is due to a multitude of factors:
- Beds still unnecessarily utilise block entities, which were previously used for distinguishing color prior to 1.13 but are no longer required due to separate alphanumeric IDs after this point. (
MC-122532) - Each whole bed renders six planes that are never visible in normal gameplay. Two of these correspond to the interior of the bed, across the edge of a block (
MC-167243), whereas the other four correspond to the top faces of each of the four feet of the bed. - When a bed is adjacent to a block of the exact same type, the occluded faces are still rendered, rather than culled as is done with most other correctly-modelled blocks. (MC-141306)
The negative effects of this can be felt quite easily in areas with large numbers of beds, such as villager breeding stations and large iron farms.
How to reproduce
Attached to this ticket is a zip file containing two worlds. A resource pack is also attached which creates equivalent bed models: copper grates are remodeled to the foot of a bed, and oxidised copper grates to the head of a bed. An item model for beds also replaces the cobweb item model.
- Download and apply the attached resource pack
- Set your render distance to 2 and FOV to default, and turn off VSync
- Open the "bed platform" world
- Use F3+2 to open performance graphs
/tp @s 8.5 -60 8.5 180 -22.5
- Observe
- Exit this world and repeat for the improved platform world, observing
Expected results
Beds would not hurt performance.
Actual results
They noticeably do.
How to fix
Should be simple enough: get rid of the block entities for beds and convert them back over to proper block models. Performance should increase considerably.
This would also permit resource pack creators to customize bed models once again, and would fix issues such as MC-69683 and MC-231102 for beds.
The bug
Chests, including trapped chests and ender chests, are considerably more resource-intensive to render compared to other blocks in the game, even those with more complex models. This is due to a multitude of factors:
- For rendering, chests utilise block entities, unlike most other blocks, which use block models. Since chests only animate when interacted with, having a block entity used for rendering every part of a chest at all times is unnecessary and is responsible for the majority of chest-related lag.
- Each closed chest renders three planes that are never visible in normal gameplay: specifically the back of the lock, and the two interior textures. These are only visible when the chest is in an open state.
- In addition, the lid of the chest and the main body of the chest use separate cuboids for rendering, meaning that the four outer horizontal faces use two quads each when only one is strictly required.
- Finally, due to not using the entity model system, chests against solid opaque blocks will not have their faces culled, causing them to still be rendered despite the fact they will never be visible.
As chests are widely used in very large amounts in storage systems, chest lag in personal worlds is a common issue.
How to reproduce
Two resource packs are attached to this ticket: one which introduces models for chests based on the json model format, and one which remodels placed cobwebs to use the model for single chests.
- Download and apply the "chest-fix-resources" pack, and the "chest-performance-test" pack on top of it
- Create a The Void superflat world with doDaylightCycle and doWeatherCycle disabled
- Set your render distance to 3, FOV to default, and disable VSync
- Use F3+2 to open performance graphs

/fill -8 -60 -8 7 -45 7 chest[facing=south]
, observe
/fill -8 -60 -8 7 -45 7 barrel
, observe
Expected results
Chests wouldn't hurt performance by a lot.
Actual results
They do. We can confirm that the block-entity rendering is the main issue rather than simply the presence of a block entity, as barrels did not cause the same levels of lag.
How to fix
The issue here is obvious - most of the lag comes from the fact that, despite chests being stationary 99% of the time, a block entity is still used for rendering them, when this would only be necessary for the opening/closing animation.
The attached resource pack includes model files for a "closed" chest, an "open" chest with no lid, and a model for the lid itself. Equivalent models for large chests are also included.
Closed chests could be rendered using standard block models 100% of the time. For open chests, since the main body of the chest remains stationary, it too could be rendered using just a block model. The only thing requiring a block entity for rendering would be the lid, as it would be in motion when closing and opening the chest (much like is the case for the book on an enchanting table).
As part of fixing this, I've also split up each chest texture into one texture file for each face (and one texture file for each chest type's lock), located in the textures/block directory rather than the textures/entity/chest directory. These split textures, alongside being easier and more intuitive to customize than the current strangely-mapped format, should also take up much less space on an atlas (81 spaces in total, compared to the current 192) due to there being much less dead, unused space in the texture file.
Retiring block-entity rendering would also fix several other issues for chests, such as MC-69683 and MC-231102, as well as the problem where they de-render too early at a distance.
The bug
Shulker boxes are perhaps one of the most horribly unoptimized blocks in vanilla Minecraft when it comes to rendering:
- Despite being outwardly a simple cube, all of the many, many interior faces are also rendered, at all times, despite them never being visible without clipping inside of the block.
- Being an opaque full cube, they also do not cull the faces of any other blocks that are occluded by them.
- They themselves are also not culled by any blocks next to them.
- To top it off, instead of the standard block model system, shulker boxes render as entities, which is provably far more expensive.
This is a major issue in cases where large numbers of shulker boxes are present, such as advanced storage and loading systems.
How to reproduce
Two resource packs are attached to this ticket: one which introduces models for shulker boxes based on the json model format, and one which remodels reinforced deepslate to use the closed shulker box model.
- Download and apply the "shulker-box-optimization-resources" pack, and the "shulker-box-optimized-demo" pack on top of it
- Create a The Void superflat world with doDaylightCycle and doWeatherCycle disabled
- Set your render distance to 3, FOV to default, and disable VSync
- Use F3+2 to open performance graphs
/tp @s 16.5 -60 16.5 135 -22.5
/fill -8 -60 -8 7 -45 7 reinforced_deepslate

/fill -8 -60 -8 7 -45 7 shulker_box
, observe
/fill -8 -60 -8 7 -45 7 barrel

Expected results
Shulker boxes wouldn't hurt performance by a lot.
Actual results
They do. We can confirm that the block-entity rendering is the main issue rather than simply the presence of a block entity, as barrels did not cause the same levels of lag.
How to fix
It is evident that the current block entity system for rendering shulker boxes needs to be scrapped. This should preferably be done in favour of the existing block model system.
Since shulker boxes are almost always in a closed state, a simple cube model will suffice, without requiring any extra internal geometry.
For opened shulker boxes, the optimization-resources resource pack contains model files for the stationary base under "open", and the animated, rotating lid under "lid". Only the lid, when the shulker box is opening, needs to use the block-entity renderer.
Split versions of the shulker texture are also included for easier use with shulker boxes as block models.
Retiring block-entity rendering would also fix several other issues for shulker boxes, such as MC-69683 and MC-231102, as well as the problem where they de-render too early at a distance.
The bug
If a chest with an enchantment glint is equipped on a mob which can have a chest equipped, the enchantment glint will not play. This is unlike saddles, which correctly show the enchant glint.
How to reproduce
- Tame a donkey
/give @s saddle[minecraft:enchantment_glint_override=true]/give @s chest[minecraft:enchantment_glint_override=true]- Equip both on the donkey
Expected results
Both the saddle and chest would display the enchantment glint.
Actual results
The saddle correctly displays the enchantment glint, but the chest does not.
How to fix
Make the chest rendering be handled by the equipment system; this would also fix MC-279508.
Further notes
Chests as items do not display the enchantment glint due to a bug; see MC-69683. This could be fixed by reopening and actually fixing MC-276877, as the item would then no longer be using the block entity rendering system.

Confirmed
yep, and this bug is in the game for quite some time (at least since the 1.7 update) please fix
Any updates on this?
Update latest detail. Still in 17w06a.
Can confirm for 18w22c.
Affects 1.13-pre5. Please add the following example command, and update your description to include the trident, and to be more coherent in general.
/give @s chest{Enchantments:[{id:"minecraft:loyalty",lvl:1}]}Affects 1.13-pre6.
Shields, and shields with patterns on them have been fixed. All the other issues are still in 1.13 full release.
enchantments properly render on blocks that use json models as of 1.8+. Enchantments don't render for anything that uses TEISR's this is the issue not the hand or inventory specifically but, the code is non existent
Can you guys fix this for 1.14? I would like to see code for how to do this for my own rendering library especially since forge never supported this ever. Please reconsider fixing this asap thanks
Note the glass should be a separate issue. It's because the TEISR chest to render enchantments simply don't exists for anything TEISR. And glass is a different issue because the algorithm itself using IBakedModel(JSON Model) failed for the glass block.
