Ok, prepare for something... Could please a mod mark the versions for every bug I tell you here? That would be nice.
I have a world set up for fast bug testing. That means that going into each bug report and saying "Confirmed for 1.10.1" is way more work than actually testing it. So I want to confirm for 1.10.1 with this comment:
MC-4, MC-9, MC-14, MC-87, MC-112, MC-201, MC-212, MC-234, MC-258, MC-460, MC-577, MC-667, MC-679, MC-696, MC-697, MC-849, MC-868, MC-926, MC-957, MC-997, MC-1040, MC-1127, MC-1133, MC-1168, MC-1207, MC-1218, MC-1297, MC-1390, MC-1429, MC-1530, MC-1531, MC-1538, MC-1541, MC-1555, MC-1578, MC-1673, MC-1685, MC-1691, MC-1981 and MC-2023.
All of these are tested in 1.10.1. For some others I have additional information:
MC-711 not testable with my setup because of a crash that's new in 1.10.1.
MC-779: At least some appear outside, didn't test all. What's sure is that no general solution got introduced.
Confirmed MC-1511 for stone button, lever, torch, redstone dust, normal rail, end rod, tripwire hook, ladder and flower pot. Others are untested.
Confirmed MC-1874 for chest, brewing stand, enchanting table and flower pot. Others are untested. It's apparent that there isn't a general solution here either.
Thank you for your report!
We're actually already tracking this issue in MC-148689 and MC-1531, so I resolved and linked this ticket as a duplicate.

Relates to MC-1531
Affects all versions through 20w46a.
In addition to that, and while it may not be particularly helpful to talk about a mod on a vanilla bug forum, I thought it was worth mentioning that a popular mod called Sodium fixes both this issue and MC-1531, amongst others. If within reason, someone might want to ask the developer of the mod (JellySquid) to help out with these issues.
Thank you for your report!

Would MC-1531 happen to describe your issue?
This is an older issue, previously tracked in MC-1531 and MC-68129.
The bug
Smooth lighting doesn't work on the water surface. Simple as that.

Smooth lighting is at maximum in this screenshot.

It seems like there's already an older bug report for this, although it is about paintings and item frames as well: MC-1531. I've split the water surface case from that bug report and we're going to continue tracking it here.
As the owner of MC-1531, can I request ownership of this as well?

HubbiGamingTV Could you please not go through tons of tickets, making either obvious/redundant (MC-201, MC-1531, MC-3266, MC-1673, …) or incorrect (MC-180, MC-212, MC-2157, MC-2112, MC-2791, MC-1297, …) statements? I got lots of mails from your comments over night, followed by a bunch of mails of people correcting you. I'm a little confused here, how is it a feature request if falling blocks shading/smooth lighting works as expected? Seems inconsistent to me, both are rendered as entities and this behavior makes opt out the use of block_display to accurately represent fake/disguised blocks.
This is already a problem with other entities/block entities and they're currently being triaged in MC-1531 & MC-231102, so i don't see why this one would be any different.
Hello, can this be reconsidered? I'm inclined to believe that the WAI resolution is a little mistake here, as the screenshots provided probably weren't enough to demonstrate how noticeable this issue really is. This is a bug that affects almost every entity in the game, including players.
Some of the related issues like MC-231102 & MC-1531 are already being triaged, where the latter covers this issue about paintings and item frames, which are in fact entities. This was fixable in 1.16 (as i mentioned, sodium did at some point) but after the 1.17 rendering changes this cannot be fixed even by mods in some reliable manner, due to the shader code using integer vector types, limiting the value range to the usual 15 light levels.
The differences can be seen here, with players:
Current smooth lighting_1.mp4
Fixed smooth lighting_1.mp4
And also mobs, like skeletons:
Current smooth lighting_2.mp4
Fixed smooth lighting_2.mp4![]()
Hopefully this is enough to show that this is genuinely an issue.

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
Yes, this is still a concern in the latest 1.5 pre-release, especially visible on water.
It has been like this since the Smooth Lighting mod was incorporated directly into Minecraft, ever since... Beta 1.3 or something it was.
This is still affecting 1.6.2. Also smooth lighting does not work on animated textures.
Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version 1.7.4 / Launcher version 1.3.8 or later? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
It's still the case in 14w20b.
Since the creation of Smooth Lighting.
Screenshot in
MC-3553is still up to date.Lighting was rewritten in 14w26 (
MC-92). Is this still an issue?Still in 14w32d.
Confirmed for 1.9-pre1
Please attach screenshots of water and snow showing the issue.
Can confirm that smooth lighting works for snow layers in 1.9.1-pre3
confirmed snow layer fixed, water and paintings are still an issue in 16w14a tho
Confirmed for 1.10. Tested water like in picture 4 and skull painting. It's not that visible like in picture 4, but there are light differences on the block borders.
Confirmed for 1.10.1.
This still affects 1.11.2.
I Have that issues at all minecraft versions witch I try open. Reinstall game or graphics cart drivers don't work. udate OS don't work too. Except on water and pictures, problem is on snow.
Can confirm for 1.12.1.
Can confirm it's still there in 1.12.2 as well

Isn't this also true for Item Frames?
I've obviously already marked this for 19w35a, what was the point of commenting that?
Isn't mojang going to fix this bug, seriously it is a game breaker for me. I was playing pocket edition up until may 2019 when I purchased the java edition for my new gaming pc and this bug irritates me whenever I'm near water or strip mining
1.15 pre 1 is affected
Slightly related to
MC-165503I honestly do hope this is fixed. As a shader user, I really dislike seeing my maps in item frames look that bad.
Soul sand also doesn´t have smooth lightning.
This seems to me to be easier to see for horizontal water (because you don't need glass in front of it) and for the back side of paintings.
BTW, I can not confirm this for soul sand.
Affects 1.16.1
Water surfaces should be split off into their own ticket (as it's not related to others as they are entities)
Affects 20w45a

There is also no smooth lighting under water which is I suppose the same issue
Affects 1.17 Pre-2
Affects 1.17 Pre-release 3. Smooth lighting underwater works, just not the surface texture.
I've split off the issue with smooth lighting on the water surface into MC-227302.
Can confirm in 1.17.1.
entities have no smooth lighting, only blocks.
Can confirm in 21w37a.
Can confirm in 1.18 Pre-release 1.
Still an issue as of 1.18.1
In 22w12a.
this is because paintings and item frames are entities and as far as i know smooth lighting only affects blocks
