Whether or not a player experiences some effect is calculated based on the block under the center of the player
Mod edit:

- walking completely silent
- walking speed on Ice edge is normal
- fall damage when falling on the edge of slime blocks
- no reduced fall damage when falling on edge of hay bale
- wrong/no fall particles when landing on the edge of a block (allows for
MC-240028,MC-240029andMC-122547to be seen) - no damage while standing on the edge of magma blocks
- can jump normally on the edge of honey blocks
- jumping while standing on the edge of farmland does not turn it into dirt
- redstone ore not activated when standing on the edge
- not being affected by soul speed when standing on the edge of soul sand/soil
- when landing on wool with the player center above air, sculk sensors are activated (
MC-252389) - when walking on the edge of blocks, sculk sensors do not detect vibrations (
MC-207290) - taking fall damage at the edge of powder snow

Walking at the very edge of a block makes you completely silent
Walking at the very edge of a block, and I mean the longest out possible on a block, will make it silent since it is not registering the walking. You are still on the block, just that it is silent. This bug has existed since before alpha.
Environment
16GB RAM, Intel Core i7 2600K Processor with a HD6870. OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
FYI: It is the same on all computers i've tested.

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version 1.6.4 / Launcher version 1.2.5 ? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.

Technicaly you "walk" already on the water, therefore also no sound there --> Duplicate of MC-1133
Duplicate of MC-1133.
This is actually a duplicate of MC-1133, they are both the same underlying problem.
Dupe of MC-1133.
Confirmed in 1.8.2-pre6. Dupe of MC-1133.
Yes it is. Both this and MC-1133 are symptoms of the same issue- entities only check for the block directly beneath them, not the one they are actually standing on.
MC-1133 is NOT the same issue. It specifically refers to being completely at the edge, before that point the issue does not occur. These irrelevant comments are diluting the issue.
Oh, that's MC-1133.
Relates to MC-1133. In fact, they are basically the same bug. The game calculates effects based simply on the block below the player's center, not what they are actually standing on.
Players can sneak very far off off the edge of a block, so much that they appear to be floating in midair. This looks weird and leads to odd behavior such as MC-1133.
Resolved MC-1133 to this ticket.
I would argue that they are slightly different; MC-1133 is about x/z position while this ticket is about vertical position. The two don't always occur at the same time and I think it is conceivable that one could be fixed while the other stays the same.
Green snake: You can stop updating this ticket, since it was resolved as duplicate of MC-1133 quite a long time ago.
Ok, prepare for something... Could please a mod mark the versions for every bug I tell you here? That would be nice.
I have a world set up for fast bug testing. That means that going into each bug report and saying "Confirmed for 1.10.1" is way more work than actually testing it. So I want to confirm for 1.10.1 with this comment:
MC-4, MC-9, MC-14, MC-87, MC-112, MC-201, MC-212, MC-234, MC-258, MC-460, MC-577, MC-667, MC-679, MC-696, MC-697, MC-849, MC-868, MC-926, MC-957, MC-997, MC-1040, MC-1127, MC-1133, MC-1168, MC-1207, MC-1218, MC-1297, MC-1390, MC-1429, MC-1530, MC-1531, MC-1538, MC-1541, MC-1555, MC-1578, MC-1673, MC-1685, MC-1691, MC-1981 and MC-2023.
All of these are tested in 1.10.1. For some others I have additional information:
MC-711 not testable with my setup because of a crash that's new in 1.10.1.
MC-779: At least some appear outside, didn't test all. What's sure is that no general solution got introduced.
Confirmed MC-1511 for stone button, lever, torch, redstone dust, normal rail, end rod, tripwire hook, ladder and flower pot. Others are untested.
Confirmed MC-1874 for chest, brewing stand, enchanting table and flower pot. Others are untested. It's apparent that there isn't a general solution here either.
Duplicate of MC-1133
Are you sure that your middle is NOT on the block that stays farmland? Because if you get stuck when your middle is on the unchanged block, this might be a variant of MC-1133.
Yes, I am sure that my middle is on the block that changes. (I place the sign by looking down and forwards, and that'll only place it on the block you're on, not the one behind you; also trampling by jumping will (by MC-1133) only affect the block you're directly on and not the one behind you).
The bug
Falling on certain blocks produces particle effects and footstep sounds.
Affected blocks:
- Barrier
Structure voidFixed in 23w18aLightFixed in 23w18aNether portalFixed in 23w18aEnd portal (as of 18w31a no longer "missing texture", but obsidian)Fixed in 23w18aEnd gateway (as of 18w31a no longer "missing texture", but obsidian)Fixed in 23w18a
Note
In previous versions (1.12.2 or 17w46a), falling on these blocks doesn't produce any particles.
Since 23w18a, only barriers seem to have this issue due to the fix of MC-1133.
Searched to no reports for the bedrock edition, although this does seem to be basically the same as MC-1133 on the java edition, which would also cover MCPE-18063.
Relates to MC-1133
1. fill ~ ~ ~ ~500 ~ ~ oak_trapdoor[half=top]]
2. Rocket boost with elytra and fly under the trapdoors.
Result: Wooden step sound.
Also possible with lower half trapdoors and carefully gliding on top of them.
Only affects block less than 0.5m thick due to MC-1133.
Note: End portal and gateway can only be affected because of MC-1133.
Thanks for the large report. We generally prefer one issue per report, though. Also, most of these have already been reported; feel free to vote for those ones:
Bows don't show animation while in offhand
This is MC-88356.
Shields and bows do not stay in the user’s hands when he aims with a bow and sneaks
This is MC-86127.
The sword slash particle animation is backwards when in third person front view.
I think this is MC-74764.
feature requests section
Feature requests should be posted onto /r/MinecraftSuggestions, not here; the tracker is for bugs only. Those are both fair suggestions (though you're not the only one who's suggested them).
The walking sound is not in sync with the players walk frequency in 3rd person, but in first person the screen bobbing is just right. Perhaps change the speed at which the legs & arms move?
I haven't noticed this one, and I don't think it's been reported. It does seem more like a feature request though. (I actually didn't realize that the bobbing was aligned; this'll probably bother me now
)
Walking on carpets makes the sound and running particle effect of the block underneath it.
This is MC-8820, but it's fundamentally caused by the next issue...
Running near water shows the sprinting particle effect coming from the water. This just looks cheap.
This is MC-1133, and it's rather hard to fix unfortunately since it's a fairly deep issue in the engine.
Small, thin floating lines and gaps in the corners appear on a person's character model and tools they are holding in both first person and third person
This is either MC-73186 or MC-1794.
Shield does not appear to be shielding in multiplayer when it actually is.
This sounds like MC-86253, but that was already fixed. It might also be MC-82995?
Why do spiders horizontally! Plz mojang! It’s not that difficult to fix!
Not entirely sure what you mean by this, so I'm going to go with 5.
In general, these are all valid bugs, but they've already been reported. Please search first, and try to stick to one bug per report, thanks.
Or make it use the particles of the adjacent block.

The bug
When the center of the player is not above scaffolding, they are not experiencing its ladder effect: Smoothly going up and down.
Instead they jump up one scaffolding block at a time and fall down multiple scaffolding blocks when going down.
This is related to MC-1133, but possibly not a duplicate, because some functionality (that you can go up and down) works as expected.
How to reproduce
- Build a tower of scaffolding
- Move partially inside it, but make sure that your center is not inside it
- Move upwards by pressing the jump key
→
You jump up one block at a time instead of going upwards smoothly - Move downwards by pressing the sneak key
→
You fall downwards
Might be linked to MC-1133 somehow

Yes, apologies. I linked the incorrect report. It is MC-1133.
XD Either way it's a duplicate QAQ
By the way how do you find whether an issue is a duplicate if the titles are so different? I would never have thought of searching for things like MC-1133...
Duplicate of MC-1133
This is caused by MC-1133. However, as opposed to that issue, this issue could be prevented by checking whether the player is actually standing on top of the bed (on the correct y coordinate).

This bug may be related to MC-1133 as it thinks you aren't inside the block but rather "on" air instead. This standing on the edge of a block causing weird effects is likely related to this bug.
When testing MC-1133, you can notice this bug at the same time. If you walk along the edge of blue/compact ice, with torches on the floor next to it, your walking speed will be normal and you'll hear wood stepping sounds, eventhough you're suspended by ice. This is how I've been testing these two bugs at once.
Basically the game appears to calculate the sound and other effects depending on what is under the center of the player, and not what you're actually walking on. Jumping/falling/walking is all the same therein. I tried to rephrase the summary of this ticket to be more concise about this, but it's difficult and I don't want to make too many assumptions about the mechanic.

@bugsbugsbugs this does not duplicate MC-1133, as you do not need to center your hitbox inside the block to activate this. The only thing that is required is that any part of the bottom of your hitbox be inside the top part of the block.

[Mojang] slicedlime why did you close this as a duplicate of MC-1133? This is indeed not calculated based on the center, any part of the players hitbox can stand above the big dripleaf to make it tilt.
As bugsbugsbugs says, this is not a duplicate and is not resolved. You do not need to be centered on the block for this issue to occur and there are no other blocks this bug effects except dripleaf. MC-1133 does not apply to dripleafs at all, as they appear to have been coded to droop when any part of the bottom of your hitbox is inside the top of theirs.

Does MC-1133 describe your issue? Your player center maybe off the back edge.
Hi Jess,
No, MC-1133 does not describe my issue. In other testing, I have found that even when the entire floor is either wool or carpet, it still does it. I originally found this issue when I was creating a building and made the floor out of a variation of carpet and wool, and had sculk inside. It might be worth testing to see if it has something to do with the block underneath the carpet.
Cheers!

Hi again!
I can confirm that MC-1133 does not describe my issue. I can also confirm that the block underneath the carpet does not affect it.

Duplicate of MC-1133.
Duplicate of MC-1133.
It is not a duplicate of MC-1133. This bug did not occur in 1.19.4 but does occur in 23w12a.
dupe of MC-1133
how is this a duplicate of MC-1133? If this is a dupe it might as well be MC-1691, but as that was resolved as Works as Intended, I created a new bug report for this issue since it seems like the particles should appear as they do when sprinting/landing on trapdoors in other configurations (bottom opened, top closed, top opened).

When honey blocks are pushed by pistons entities on top of them are moved along with the honey block. However, this is not the case if the center of the entity is over the honey block.
How to reproduce:
- Setup a contraption like in this image:

- Stand on the edge of the honey block towards the piston
- Activate the lever
Expected result:
You get moved along with the honey block
Observed result:
You don't get moved along and fall down
clones MC-164032 which was marked as duplicate of MC-1133, but this bug remains after the fix of MC-1133
This might very well be WAI, but reporting just in case.
Observed result:
Wither roses damage entities when they are inside the block of the wither rose.
Expected result:
Wither roses only damage entities that intersect with the bounding box of the wither rose.
How to reproduce:
The easiest way to reproduce this is to simply walk near a wither rose and observe when you take damage.
For a clearer reproduction, see the image below. Note that wither roses are placed at different positions inside the block depending on the coordinates, so you need to find a position where it is far enough to one side for this setup to work.

Clones MC-199846 which was marked as duplicate of MC-1133 but this issue remains.
If an entity (in this case, the player) is standing on a magma block, they now take damage even if their hitbox is at the edge of the block due to the fix of MC-1133, which is expected.
However, there's still some strange behavior where even if you stand at the very edge of the magma block and there is any block below you other than air, you don't take damage.
Expected result
Logically, if the entity hitbox is (barely) touching the magma block, it would deal damage to that entity, regardless of if there is a block or air below the entity.
Observed result
Damage can be avoided if the hitbox touches the magma block, if there's any other block below the entity other than air.
How to reproduce
- Place a magma block and stand on the very edge.
- Notice how you take damage.
- Now place a block directly below you without moving.
- Notice how you no longer take damage.
The way I see it, the item is more on non-slippery ground than slippery, so taking more frictiom makes sense.
If the concrete is replaced by air, does it still happen?
According to slicedlime's changes video (not official source, I know) the fix for MC-1133 was that the properties of the first-collided-with block are used, and since both the concrete andice are collided with at the same time, I'd recon the most-collided-with block is supposed to take priority.
WAI per fixing of MC-1133; ice is slippery.
Ice block doesnt give speed when moving in the direction towards the very edge of the block, away from the middle, and landing on the edge. THIS IS DIFFERENT FROM MC-1133, AND IS TESTED IN THE LATEST SNAPSHOT.
What I expected to happen
When I land on the edge of the ice, I expect to get the speed effect. When I land on the edge of the slime, I expect to get the slime effect
What actually happened was...:'
I don't get any effect
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Recreate the parkour setup (attached image)
2. Like in the attached video, go right against the wall of the leftmost block. Face towards the parkour, then press jump+sprint+move forward on the same tick, don't stop, and jump immediately on every block. You won't get speed on the last ice since you jumped towards the edge.
3. Place the ice as shown in the video, then repeat step 2. You should land at basically the same place on the highest block, but since you placed the ice where the edge of the block used to be, you now get the speed effect and can make the jump while still jumping immediately on the same spot.
4. The same can be done but with slime instead of ice on the highest block, and bouncing instead of jumping on the block. Landing on the edge, you won't bounce,
Duplicate of MC-1133, this got fixed in yesterday's snapshot; do not mark versions as affected if you do not test them.
In 23w18a there was a bug fix for MC-1133. One of the changes made to make this happen can cause a worldgen deadlock under certain conditions.
Essentially what's happening is that when an entity is loaded, it often checks for supporting blocks before their bounding box is updated to match the entity's position.
Since the supporting block check uses this bounding box to determine block collisions, this means that it will require chunks around X=0 and Z=0 to be loaded to perform this check, even if the entity is not actually being loaded there.
If this for any reason happens during world generation, such as a structure loading in with entities, this will cause a deadlock because the generating chunk is asking to load another chunk, but can itself never finish until that other chunk is loaded.
This also is not exclusively an issue with servers that disable spawn chunks from loading.
In vanilla this can be reproduced (although inconsistently) by having this happen during world initialization (preparing spawn area) - before all the spawn chunks have finished loading.
Reproduction steps:
- Create a new world with (for ex.) seed 2374522903531219544
- See how the process gets stuck indefinitely. (This isn't guaranteed to happen every time)
Update
I would like to add that this is not only caused by the bounding box not being updated in time. Even when the bounding box is updated before the check, and matches the correct position, this call still seems to be capable of causing a deadlock, but now because requesting chunks for collision checks seems to require the chunk to be fully loaded, which it will never be. I am not 100% sure how chunk loading works so some of this may not be accurate.

Confirmed, this occurs on mac computers too.
Please don't mark an issue as affecting a future version; you can't have tested it already
Confirmed in 1.4.6.
I think the problem is that when you walk out oh the very edge of a block, you're actually no longer on the original block. If you go into 3rd person mode, you can see that you aren't actually on the block, and that you're actually on the air. It still registers that you are standing on the block, but not the part that makes noise.
Still a concern in 1.7.5, 14w08a and 10b, relates to
MC-44381still in 10c
Confirmed in 14w28b. It does have to do with the fact that you are not technically "standing" on the block. I will upload a couple pictures of the F3 menu showing this
These are two screenshots showing the bug. Please note the x values of "Block" and "Looking at". The ice is along x=1, but the "Block" value you are "standing" on is 0.

Affects 18w22c. Can a relates to be added for
MCPE-18063?It seems as though sprinting on the edges of water no longer shows water particles.
Water particles probably don't show up with this bug because water is no longer really a block and is instead more of just a block tag.
Then why does it still show up upon falling?
This issue makes falling on slime blocks adjacent to air quite risky
This makes descending very dangerous! (see
MC-139088)This bug allows you to stand on the edge of a magma block and not take any damage.
Also affects scaffolding.
Also affects honey blocks.
Should this ticket be split into multiple smaller tickets? Granted they all originate to this same cause though, so maybe not.
I don't think it would be useful to split this one, since there is one underlying cause that, if fixed, would be fixed for more or less all of the cases. (It would require pretty systemic changes, but also almost certainly wouldn't be fixed for only one of the cases without fixing the rest.) Compare to, say,
MC-9553, where the bug is composed of lots of individual interactions that each needed to be fixed individually; there, splitting made sense.Allows you to jump onto iron block in attached picture if you stand on edge of honey block
This issue also affects blocks that have the climbable tag like for example ladders, vines. I am not sure if this is intended for these blocks but I believe that it's not.
Soul Speed is affected as well, see
MC-174483for instance.I did some testing planning to open my own issue specific to honey blocks, but luckily found this one so I do not duplicate. But I will put what I found here anyway.
Java Minecraft 1.15.2
I put a honey block at -56, 56, 29. When crouch walking off the edge a player (and I assume any mob) can jump as though they were not on a honey block. I teleported myself right to the very edge of the block, at -55.88, 57.00, 29.999. (landing at y = 56.93750 if that matters at all) At that location the player's jump IS affected by the honey. But then I teleported to -55.88, 57.00, 30.00. At this location the player can jump freely uninterrupted from the honey block.
I did some more testing. I discovered some unrelated facts, like that the coordinates 29.99999999999999, 29.999999999999993, and 29.999999999999996 are all valid, but all other coordinates in between and after are rounded. Also all of these coordinates on the honey block from the last paragraph still affect the player's jump height as though you are an the honey block, so all is working as intended here.
I would suggest the player's hit box determine if it is affected by a block or not. This could break things in ways that I couldn't possibly think up, but obviously not all of the physics in this game work based on what is directly below Steve. If it did, we couldn't crouch walk off the edge of a block and hang onto it. I imagine that the same bit of code that tells the game not to fling Steve to the ground if you manage to get your center of mass off a block by .01 could help us out here. But I am only learning Java. Not yet worthy to be called a programmer, so I don't really know.
Confirmed for 20w18a. This also affects magma blocks, but not damage of campfires. (normal and soul)
Awesome! This feels so sneaky!
Confirmed for 20w20b
Striders also get cold standing on the edge of falling lava. They also don't seem to travel upwards anymore. Think this also relates to this issue. Minecraft 20w20b - Singleplayer 2020-05-14 16-50-19_Trim.mp4
That should be MC-181610. If you find a case where the center of the strider actually matters, please create a new report and say here that you did, so that it can be marked as related.
This bug also affects hay bale, so when you land on the edge of hay bale, it won’t reduce fall damage.
Confirmed for 20w21a
Confirmed for 1.16 Prerelease 1
Confirmed for 1.16 Pre-2
Confirmed for 1.16 pre-release 7
Also, only farmland that is under the center of the player gets turned into dirt when jumping.
Confirmed in Snapshot 20w45a.
Can confirm in 20w48a.
This also affects cobwebs and my guess it also affects powdered snow although I haven't tested it
Also, this must be the oldest bug report still not resloved. Correct me if I am wrong
Also, confirmed for 1.16.4
There's no reason it wouldn't affect literally every block, if we understand it correctly. The issue is in the code that calculates whether a player is "on" a block or not for the purposes of any effect relating to standing on a block.
This is a major bug but it's also likely an extremely nontrivial fix; not only would the devs need to change the code that calculates whether a player is standing on a given block, they'd also need to add code to handle any potentially conflicting effects (such as if a player is standing on both soul soil and honey blocks while wearing soul speed boots, for example). While this could absolutely be done, there's no super obvious answer for how to go about it. Personally, what we'd do is just have the effects stack, and cancel out if they conflict? But that also means they'd have to make sure standing on the line between two blocks with the same effect doesn't cause the effect to be doubled!!
I do hope mojang is at least discussing how to handle this, though. It seems like something very much worth prioritizing once other major bugs have been handled.
In 20w49a, when Sculk Sensors were introduced, it was revealed that you are able to land on air, which triggers a Sculk Sensor. Best demonstrated when landing on a wool block, but your hitbox is more than 50% off the block.
I suggest either trying to make the hitbox the player's shape so its a bit more accurate or to limit the distance that you can sneak.
Can confirm in 21w05a.
Can confirm in 21w05b.
This can now happen with powder snow when you're wearing leather boots.
Powder snow is like climbing powder snow when wearing leather boots works like scaffolding, that is why powder snow is affected by MC-139063.
This bug does not affect big dripleaf.
Confirmed in 1.17 pre-release 4
This bug also amusingly affects light blocks (landing on the corner of a solid with a light block under your center) causing yellow fall particles
Another effect is walking on the edge of powder snow doesn't slow you down, showcased in MC-227191
Can confirm in 1.17.1 Pre-release 3.
Can confirm for 1.17.1.
This also prevents soul sand from slowing you down.

Yeah, this has been a thing since beta (probably further back, but I haven't played earlier versions)
Code analysis (tentative)
This is probably because checks like this look directly below the center of the player to find what block the player is "standing" on. Instead, collision should track what blocks the player is colliding with and use that block instead.
